TEXTS: Exodus 20:12, Ephesians 6:1-4, Romans 12:9-13 BIG IDEA: The #1 reason that we don’t give honor is because we are honor hogs.

Why give

credit when you can take credit? Honor is the willful decision to lift others and lower self.

ACTION STEP FOLLOW UP (5 minutes) • Incorporate the 731 Prayer Challenge in your life and try praying first thing in the morning. (pray daily 7 times a week, pray out loud with one person three times a week, and pray out loud as a family or disciple group once a week.) • Schedule your Sabbath right now. Put it on the calendar. • Answer the invitation to rest in Jesus. (Matthew 11:28-30)

ACCOUNTABILITY QUESTIONS 1. How was your prayer life this week? 2. Did you schedule a Sabbath? 3. How are you answering the invitation to rest in Jesus?

THE RECAP (10 minutes) Pastor Joby contrasted the 5th commandment of honor your father and mother with the reality of the lack of honor in our culture today. In today’s world, honor has often been traded for sarcasm and cynicism, yet God has made it clear that honor is of high value and should start with the family. Honoring your mother and father is more than saying yes ma’am and yes sir. It is a lifestyle that one should never out grow. As a child or teenager you honor your mother and father with obedience, attitude, and words. As an adult you honor your mother and faith in the way you communicate to them, the way you express gratitude, and the way you ask for their opinion and advice. As parents, it is vital to be honorable. Children are imitators and the environment around them will affect the condition of their hearts. Jesus perfectly honored His Father by going to the cross for mankind and for that reason alone we respond by honoring others. Regardless of who your parents are or what they have done (or have not done), God calls us to honor Him through honoring them.

QUESTION (FROM THE WEEKEND SERMON) 1. What stood out to you from the sermon?

TEACHING & DIALOGUE

Facilitator, direct participants to confine discussion to the passage being studied. You can redirect comments back by asking “where does it say that in the passage?” Think: Have someone read Exodus 20:12 out loud. 1. What stands out to you in this verse? 2. What does it mean to show honor to someone? 3. Where do you see honor in our culture? Where do you see the lack of honor in our culture? Have someone read Ephesians 6:1-4 out loud.

4. What do these verses tell us about who God is? (God demands honor towards Himself and the authority He has placed in your life.) 5. What is the significance of God’s command to honor our father and mother? (The family unit is foundational to God’s creation of mankind’s social relations and developmental growth. How you parent and how you treat your parents matter!) 6. What does Jesus’ obedience to the cross mean for us? (Jesus honored His Heavenly Father by going to the cross. His obedience was not based on the credentials of the people He died for. Christ was focused on honoring His perfect and Holy Father by doing His perfect and holy will. As a Christian, we respond to Christ’s obedience by honoring those around us.)

2

“And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death-even death on a cross!” –Philippians 2:8

Have someone read Romans 12:9-13 out loud. 7. What do you need to do to honor your mother and father? 8. What do you need to do to honor your spouse, boss, coworkers, friends, etc. 9. If you are a parent, how do you need to cultivate an honorable relationship with your children? MOMENT OF TRUTH: God is not the reflection of your earthly parent; He is the perfection of what it means to be a parent. RESPOND:

In the spiritual warfare tainted with Satan’s lies, it is important for us to visually remind ourselves of God’s character and our identity in Christ. God is… From the passages read, identify a truth about God’s character and write it down. (Ex. God is our Heavenly Father.) I am… From the passages read, identify a truth about your identity in Christ that results from God’s character and write it down. (Ex. I am invited into the Promised Land through faith in Christ.) Place these statements where you can see them this week. ACTION STEPS: • This week call and connect with your parents or the people who raised you. Extend forgiveness and honor them with your words and actions. • If you have children carve out time with them this week to focus on the relationship instead of rules and restraints. • Sign up to serve in NewGen to help disciple the younger generation.
