Notes on the Service As we start 2014 together, I thought it might be helpful for us to think through the story of the Bible together. Don’t worry—I’m going to cover the entire story of the Bible in three sermons. Impossible, you think? Well, the Presbyterian and Reformed tradition often talks about the biblical story under the headings of creation-fall-redemptionconsummation. That story line helps us orient the sixty-six books of the Bible in such a way that we can understand its message: this world and humanity in the world was created good; Adam, as the representative head of all humanity, disobeyed God and plunged us into a condition of sin and misery and the world into a condition of decay and captivity. But God promised to raise up a warrior who would defeat sin, death, and the Devil through the offspring of the woman—Jesus, who triumphs over that trinity of evil at the cross and the empty tomb, and who is returning again to set the world to rights. One way of getting at this story is to pay attention to the movement from garden to garden—from the Garden of Eden through the gardens of redemption to the Garden in the New Creation. And so, over three weeks, we’ll look at these gardens and in doing so learn once again the glorious story of the Bible, which is a covenantal story of hope and joy for all kinds of people like you and me. But this service also is important because it is the time we ordain and install our new officers. God has called this men to serve us and to remind us of this Gospel story of grace and glory. I would urge you to pray for them and encourage them in their responsibilities. Perhaps it would be good to review Hebrews 13 periodically as a way of remembering our duties as congregants toward our officers. They are God’s gift to his church and his way of ensuring that we make it to the new heavens and the new earth safely.

If you would like a copy of today’s sermon, please call the church office (601-268-0303). The entire service, as well as just the sermon, is available on CD. You may also download the sermon only from our website at www.fpcpca.net.
