The Lord’s Day

Private Confession of Sin Assurance of Pardon ...................................... Romans 10:13

“And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the LORD his God.” (Micah 5:4)

We confess our sins because we have already experienced the reality of the Gospel in our lives. God’s Word tells us: “For whoever calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved.” In calling upon him with sincerity of heart, we trust his promise to save us. Thanks be to God!

Call to Worship ........................................... Psalm 8:1; 24:1-2 Minister: O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens! People: The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters. Minister: As followers of Jesus Christ, living in this world—
which some seek to control, and others view with despair—
we declare with joy and trust: Our world belongs to God! All: Our world belongs to God! God is King: Let the earth be glad! Christ is victor: his rule has begun! The Spirit is at work: creation is being renewed! Minister: Amen! Let us worship God!

Q 4. What does God’s law require of us? A. Christ teaches us this in summary in Matthew 22:37-40: “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. “And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ “On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” Q 5. Can you live up to all this perfectly? A. No. I have a natural tendency to hate God and my neighbor.

My Lord, what a mornin’, My Lord, what a mornin’, Oh, my Lord, what a mornin’ when the stars begin to fall. My Lord, what a mornin’, My Lord, what a mornin’, Oh, my Lord, what a mornin’ when the stars begin to fall. I’m done with all my worldly ways, joined that heav’nly band, done with all my worldly ways, joined that heav’nly band. My Lord, what a mornin’, My Lord, what a mornin’, Oh, my Lord, what a mornin’ when the stars begin to fall. What a mornin’. © 1995 Beckenhorst Press, Inc. All rights reserved. In our affirmation of faith, we come to Lord’s Day 2 in the Heidelberg Catechism. We enter into a series of questions that tell us about our “guilt” before God. The law demands that we love God and love others perfectly, but we cannot. In fact, we have a natural tendency to hate God and our neighbors. That natural tendency, ours from our first parents, is the root of our misery: we deserve God’s judgment for our rebellion against him. Thankfully, as Christians, we can come to God and confess our sins. Even more, we have the glorious promise, “Whoever calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved!” For the gift of salvation and every other gift given in creation, we raise to the Lord a hymn of grateful praise. May God grant you grace this morning to worship him in Spirit and Truth!
