Assurance of Pardon ................................... Ephesians 1:7-10

(Four and Five-year olds dismissed to Children’s Church)

We confess our sins in the sure confidence that God’s purpose of grace will be accomplished in our lives and our world. God’s Word says, “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight, making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.” Thanks be to God for his glorious and gracious purpose of redemption that shall be accomplished!

Affirmation of Faith .... The Heidelberg Catechism, Lord’s Day 6 Q 16. Why must the mediator be a true and righteous human? A. God’s justice demands that human nature, which has sinned, must pay for sin; but a sinful human could never pay for others. Q 17. Why must the mediator also be true God? A. So that the mediator, by the power of his divinity, might bear the weight of God’s wrath in his humanity and earn for us and restore to us righteousness and life. Q 18. Then who is this mediator—true God and at the same time a true and righteous human? A. Our Lord Jesus Christ, who was given to us to completely deliver us and make us right with God. Q 19. How do you come to know this? A. The holy gospel tells me. God began to reveal the gospel already in Paradise; later God proclaimed it by the holy patriarchs and prophets and foreshadowed it by the sacrifices and other ceremonies of the law; and finally God fulfilled it through his own beloved Son.

Prayer of Intercession and The Lord’s Prayer *Ascription of Praise (Hymn 311, verse 1) ................... aurelia Hail to the Lord’s Anointed, great David’s greater Son! Hail, in the time appointed, his reign on earth begun! He comes to break oppression, to set the captive free, to take away transgression, and rule in equity.

Our Father, who art in heaven; hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Notes on the Service As part of our annual missions conference, we are pleased to welcome to our pulpit, Joseph Wheat, senior pastor of Highlands Presbyterian Church, Madison, Mississippi. A graduate of Auburn University and Reformed Theological Seminary, Joseph has served churches in Georgia, Alabama, and Colorado, prior to coming back to the Jackson area in 2005 to serve Highlands. He is passionate about church planting, missions, and evangelism, being instrumental in starting church planting networks in Rocky Mountain Presbytery as well as here in Mississippi. Our service today is shaped by Psalm 72, a glorious psalm that tells us about the ultimate victory of Christ our king. Not only does that psalm call us to worship, but we sing various settings of it—our ascription of praise is a versification of the psalm by James Montgomery; we follow this with “Jesus shall reign,” the version of Psalm 72 written by Isaac Watts. We hail Christ, the Lord’s Anointed, the king who delivers the needy, the poor, the weak, the helpless and grants them salvation in his name! Such confidence draws us to confess our sins to God. As we confess our sins in thought, word, and deed, in things that we have done and things that we have left undone, we recognize that we have not loved God or each other as we ought. But we also recognize that Jesus has gained redemption for us through his blood. Even more, this redemption that is ours is actually a foretaste and sign of the cosmic redemption that God is working in and through Jesus. Christ the King will rule over this world made new! Our affirmation of faith teaches us more about the work of Christ the Mediator. The Heidelberg Catechism, Lord’s Day 6, reminds us that Jesus our Redeemer is both true God and true man—true man so that he might be identified with us humans; true God so that he might bear the weight of God’s wrath. And the entire Bible teaches us this Gospel— the Old Testament as well as the New, the law and prophets as well as the Gospels and epistles—all point us to Jesus the Redeemer, our King. And so, we rejoice in the good news of the Gospel through which God is making us and his world new. May God give us eyes to see him and his world as he does: as the place and people he is making new for his glory and for our good! If you would like a copy of today’s sermon, please call the church office (601-268-0303). The entire service, as well as just the sermon, is available on CD. You may also download the sermon only from our website at www.fpcpca.net.
