Psalm 100 Minister: Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing! People: Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Minister: Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! All: For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations. Amen! Let us worship God!

Assurance of Pardon ........................................ Psalm 32:1-2

+Doxology (Hymn 731) ....................................OLD HUNDREDTH

We confess our sins because God has already blessed us with a full pardon. God’s Word says, “Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.” Thanks be to God that he forgives all our sins in and through Jesus Christ our Lord!

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise Him, all creatures here below; praise Him above, ye heav’nly host: praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Affirmation of Faith .....The Heidelberg Catechism, Lord’s Day 7

This is my Father’s world, and to my listening ears all nature sings, and round me rings the music of the spheres. This is my Father’s world; I rest me in the thought of rocks and trees, of skies and seas, His hand the wonders wrought. This is my Father’s world; the birds their carols raise; the morning light, the lily white, declare their maker’s praise. This is my Father’s world; He shines in all that’s fair; in the rustling grass I hear Him pass, He speaks to me everywhere. This is my Father’s world; Oh, let me ne’er forget that though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is in the Ruler yet. This is my Father’s world; why should my heart be sad? The Lord is King, let the heavens ring; God reigns, let the earth be glad!

Q 20. Are all people then saved through Christ just as they were lost through Adam? A. No. Only those are saved who through true faith are grafted into Christ and accept all his benefits. Q 21. What is true faith? A. True faith is not only a sure knowledge by which I hold as true all that God has revealed to us in Scripture; it is also a wholehearted trust, which the Holy Spirit creates in me by the gospel, that God has freely granted, not only to others but to me also, forgiveness of sins, eternal righteousness, and salvation. These are gifts of sheer grace, granted solely by Christ’s merit. Q 22. What then must a Christian believe? A. All that is promised us in the gospel, a summary of which is taught us in the articles of our universal and undisputed Christian faith.

All you that fear Jehovah’s name, his glory tell, his praise proclaim; you children of his chosen race, stand...in awe before his face, stand in awe before his face.

Q 23. What are these articles? A. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Corporate Confession of Sin Merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you
with our whole heart and mind and strength. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us amend what we are,
and direct what we shall be, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your holy name. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven; hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Notes on the Service We return this morning to Genesis and we come to see how Adam’s sin has repercussions throughout the generations. Even though Cain and Lamech and others do not sin in the same way as Adam does, they surely do sin and evidence the corruption that has taken hold of the human heart as a result of the fall. The old rhyme, “In Adam’s fall, we sin all,” proves to be true in the tragic scenes of Genesis 4. But there are notes of hope in the text: Seth represents the godly line that calls upon the name of the Lord. The grace that God shows to Seth and displays in us draws our hearts to call upon the Lord’s name this morning. Our call to worship from Psalm 100 draws us to make a joyful noise to the Lord, to serve the Lord with gladness, and to come into his

presence with singing! And so, we do: not only the choir, but the entire congregation will raise its voice, both in the ascription of praise and in the setting of Psalm 100, “All people that on earth do dwell.” Having come into God’s presence, we confess our sins to God. This week, we use the familiar language drawn from the Book of Common Prayer: we admit that we sin against God in all sorts of ways, both by what we do and by what we leave undone. And this coheres with our catechism, which teaches us that “sin is any want of conformity unto or transgression of the law of God.” But we confess our sins knowing that we are already forgiven, already blessed, as Psalm 32 reminds us. Such confidence is displayed through faith in Jesus. The Heidelberg Catechism reminds us that only those who through true faith are “grafted into Christ and accept all his benefits” will be saved. And true faith is a wholehearted trust, a confidence, that the Gospel is true and that the Gospel is for me. Our prayer is that through the preaching, praying, and singing of God’s Word today your faith might be strengthened and your confidence in Christ confirmed.
