All:

from Psalm 106:1, Ephesians 1:3-4, 1 Peter 1:4

Praise the LORD! Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundaVon of the world, for an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading. Hallelujah! Amen!

We Come, O Christ, to You

Text: Margaret Clarkson Tune: John Darwall

Hymnal #117

We pray for God to help us worship Pastor: All:

Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! He died for us that we might live for him.

We greet one another with the peace of Christ SEATED

God calls us to confess our sin

from Psalm 1:1-2; James 4:8, 10

Liturgist: Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. So cleanse your hands and purify your hearts. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you. page 1

We confess our sin All:

Gracious Father, we confess that we compare our lives to others with envy because we believe lies about you and about ourselves: that your jus@ce will not prevail, that you will not provide for our needs, that your presence and power are not sufficient, that persevering in faith is not worth the effort and struggle. So we covet earthly success more than you. We seek to quench our deepest longings in other loves. We seek our deepest worth in work and worldly success. We seek our deepest security in worldly status. Lord, have mercy on us. (silent prayers of confession)

Liturgist: Lord, in your mercy, forgive us for envy and fear. By your Holy Spirit, set us free us from bondage to lies, so that we may see your glory and treasure you above all. Help us remember that our lives ma]er because we are made in your image and loved by you, and help us find you to be our porVon and the strength of our heart forever.

STANDING (IF ABLE)

God declares our forgiveness Liturgist:

from Ephesians 2:4-7

But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, made us alive together with Christ and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For all who have turned from sin in sorrow and look to God for mercy, this is God’s gi_. In Jesus Christ, God loves you, God forgives you, God accepts you, and God rejoices over you as beloved daughters and sons.

Chancel Choir

Lord, in thy mercy grant us peace throughout all generaVons.

Thou art alone our sword and shield, Lord who dost guide the naVons. Defend us, O God, we pray thee.

God instructs us in scripture reading All:

Psalm 73 (pew Bible pp. 485-486)

1 Truly God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. 2 But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped. 3 For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

Pastor: 4 For they have no pangs unVl death; their bodies are fat and sleek. 5 They are not in trouble as others are; they are not stricken like the rest of mankind. 6 Therefore pride is their necklace; violence covers them as a garment. 7 Their eyes swell out through fatness; their hearts overflow with follies. 8 They scoff and speak with malice; lo_ily they threaten oppression. 9 They set their mouths against the heavens, and their tongue struts through the earth. 10 Therefore his people turn back to them, and find no fault in them. 11 And they say, “How can God know? Is there knowledge in the Most High?” 12 Behold, these are the wicked; always at ease, they increase in riches. All: 13 All in vain have I kept my heart clean and washed my hands in innocence. 14 For all the day long I have been stricken and rebuked every morning. 15 If I had said, “I will speak thus,” I would have betrayed the genera@on of your children. 16 But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task, 17 un@l I went into the sanctuary of God; then I discerned their end. Pastor: 18 Truly you set them in slippery places; you make them fall to ruin. 19 How they are destroyed in a moment, swept away u]erly by terrors! 20 Like a dream when one awakes, O Lord, when you rouse yourself, you despise them as phantoms. 21 When my soul was embi]ered, when I was pricked in heart, 22 I was bruVsh and ignorant; I was like a beast toward you. page 4

All:

23 Nevertheless, I am con@nually with you; you hold my right hand. 24 You guide me with your counsel, and aWerward you will receive me to glory. 25 Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. 26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my por@on forever. Pastor: 27 For behold, those who are far from you shall perish; you put an end to everyone who is unfaithful to you. 28 All: But for me it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, that I may tell of all your works.

We pray for the church and the world Liturgist:

(prayers for the church and the world)

All:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into tempta@on, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
