+Doxology (Hymn 731) ....................................OLD HUNDREDTH

In Psalm 32, David writes: “Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man against whom the LORD counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.” As believers in gospel we know these verses experimentally, because Messiah Jesus “has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows” and the “LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” Thanks be to God for the person and work of Jesus Christ.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise Him, all creatures here below; praise Him above, ye heav’nly host: praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Affirmation of Faith .......... The Westminster Shorter Catechism Question 45: What is the first commandment? Answer: The first commandment is, Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Question 46: What is required in the first commandment? Answer: The first commandment requireth us to know and acknowledge God to be the only true God, and our God; and to worship and glorify him accordingly. Question 47: What is forbidden in the first commandment? Answer: The first commandment forbiddeth the denying, or not worshipping and glorifying the true God as God, and our God; and the giving of that worship and glory to any other, which is due to him alone. Question 48: What are we specially taught by these words [before me] in the first commandment? Answer: These words [before me] in the first commandment teach us, That God, who seeth all things, taketh notice of, and is much displeased with, the sin of having any other God.

MINISTRY STAFF

Notes on the Service As you prepare for worship this morning, consider the following words of author and pastor, Steven J. Lawson. “David Livingstone, the famous nineteenth-century Scottish missionary was an explorer of the uncharted interior of Africa. The morning he left Blantyre, Scotland, for the mission field, he gathered his family and read Psalm 121, seeking the strength he needed for the long, arduous journey that lay ahead. He prayed for his father and sister and set sail for Africa. Livingstone’s mother-in-law wrote in a farewell letter that she prayed to God, ‘Keep him as the apple of Thine eye; Hold him in the hollow of Thine hand’.” In like manner, every believer desperately needs God’s grace and power to live the Christian life, whether it be reaching a continent for Christ abroad or simply being faithful to live for the Lord at home. One of the greatest challenges is to live the Christian life, not in one’s own strength but in the power that God provides. Jesus said, “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” Lawson concludes his article by writing “All believers find themselves on a spiritual journey in this life, one in which they are traveling through this world as pilgrims toward their true home in heaven. But while we are here, the demands placed upon us are enormous, requiring extraordinary strength to remain true to God. Only by the grace of God does one find the strength to press on faithfully to the upward prize. In God’s power, believers can overcome all that confronts them and enables them to live victoriously. Solely in the Lord himself do God’s people find strength for the journey of life.”
