Letter from the President

Hello to everyone in the Brushy Creek Village CommunityThe BCVHOA Board is sad to report that Elizabeth Freany has resigned her position due to health problems, she was a vital part of our organization and will be greatly missed. Good Luck Elizabeth and thanks for all of your hard work! The fall season is upon us and many festivities in the Round Rock area are being planned, such as the PTA Back to School Night, local High School Football games, the Harry Man Festival and Halloween just to name a few. Go and enjoy one or all events and support your community. The BCVHOA has had several complaints regarding excessive speeding in our neighborhood. We contacted the Williamson County Sheriff’s Department and they said they were aware of this problem, and will increase their patrols. Please slow down and watch out for all of the children walking to and from school and playing after school, because once a life is taken it can never be given back. We are always in need of volunteers to help us out with different projects, so please consider donating just a few hours of your time 2 or 3 times a year. I look forward to seeing you at the next BCVHOA Meeting on October 2nd. If you have any questions or suggestions I look forward to hearing from you. My e-mail is [email protected]. Sincerely, Judy Walden-Hill President, Brushy Creek Village HOA

Halloween Safety Tips

From candy to the costumes, Halloween is a fun-filled time for kids and parents. Although a fun holiday there are dangers that should be avoided. Follow these simple safety tips: • Choose a light-colored costume or add glow-in-the-dark tape to the front and back • Don’t let your children wear masks- they can make it difficult for kids to breathe • Put a name tag –with your phone number on your children’s costumes • Give kids a flashlight with new batteries. • Don’t buy a costume unless it’s labeled “flame-retardant”. This means that the material won’t catch on fire. • Make sure that any props your kids carry, such as wands, swords, are flexible. • For older kids who are trick-ortreating on their own, make sure you approved of the route they’ll be coming home. • When your kids get home, check all treats to make sure they’re safely sealed and there are no signs of tapering • Make sure trick-or treaters will be safe when visiting your home too. Remove lawn decorations, sprinklers, toys, bicycles, or anything that might obstruct your walkway. Provide a well-lit outside entrance to your home. • Once your trick-or-treaters have returned with their Halloween goodies, spread out their bounty of candy by letting them have a treat or two a day, instead of making Halloween candy accessible in a big bag throughout the day.

BRUSHY CREEK VILLAGE What To Do in October

Don’t Be In The Dark About Day Care

Plant vegetable seeds like Beets, Carrot, Mustard, Onion, Garden Pea, Radishes, Spinach, Turnip. Plant vegetable plants such as Collards (and other Greens), Lettuce, Spinach, Turnip, Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Lettuce, and Spinach-give frost protection. Plant all perennial herb plants; also Cilantro, Dill, Fennel, Parsley. Seeds: Borage, Caraway, Chamomile, Chervil, Chives, Cilantro, Dill, Fennel, Parsley, Plant perennials, trees, and shrubs. Plant Columbine (in a shady location) now in order to have those springtime blooms. Plant strawberries. Create a nice, rich planting bed for them by mixing in compost and organic fertilizer. Plant wildflower seeds! They love full sun! This month is the ideal time to plant them. Overseed lawn with perennial rye. This grass is actually annual in Texas, meaning that it will die back when the spring gets hot. Perennial rye has a thin blade, establishes quickly but grows slowly, and is usually the choice for overseeding lawns, as compared to annual rye. Avoid letting either rye go to seed, or else you'll be seeing it sprout again next fall where you might not want it. Purchase (but don't plant yet) spring-blooming bulbs. Often, now is when these flower bulbs are available in the nursery. However, planting them now could cause them to start sprouting during a fall warm spell, only to be frozen back the next day, losing the bloom for next spring. It's better to plant them in November, when we - on average - begin to get more consistently cool temperatures. Put the non-naturalizing bulbs, like the classic Dutch tulip and Hyacinth, for example, in the refrigerator now for planting or for forcing. Our winters are not cold enough nor long enough for these bulbs to bloom properly here, so we must supplement their winter cold period. Bulbs require a particular cold spell, like fruit trees, in order to form their flower bud. Here are just a few types of bulbs that can naturalize here: Daffodils/Narcissus: "Carbineer," "Carlton," "Ceylon," "Delibes," "Earlicheer," "Fortune," "Grand Primo," "Ice Follies," "Mount Hood," "Paperwhites," "Rustom Pasha;" Hyacinthus orientalis var. albulus (French-Roman hyacinth); Ipheion uniflorum (blue starflowers); Lycoris squamigera (magic lily); Leucojum aestivum (summer snowflake); Muscari neglectum (a.k.a. M. racemosum or M. atlanticum); Zephyranthes candida (rain lily); and Zephyranthes drummondii (giant prairie lily).

From the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services Agency Over the last couple of years the number of regulated childcare operations has dropped, not because of falling demand for childcare but because more operations are going underground. These underground operations may be attractive to parents because they are smaller and may be a little less expensive, but they are likely more dangerous. Unregulated childcare means no oversight, no checks and balances and no guarantees of properly trained staff. Parents need to understand that not only are these operations illegal, they also subject children to unnecessary risk.
