Supplies needed for the day

Each group should have:

1. AP1-equipment (1 per kid) 2. AP2-verses (1 per kid) 3. Bucket of blocks (1 per group) 4. Pillow (1 per group)

BEFORE LARGE GROUP 20 minutes: (8:35; 10:35; 4:35) Supplies: AP1 Give each of the kids and Activity Page an have them color the pictures while they look at them. Each of the pictures is some kind of equipment for something specific. Have the kids try and name what the equipment is used to practice for. (Example: soccer ball is for soccer) Give the kids some time to color the pictures and talk about the importance of practicing with them. What are things they practice for? Also, talk with the kids about their weeks and use this time to build relationships with your group. How was their Christmas and New Year? What did they do?

10 minutes: (8:55; 10:55; 4:55) Supplies: none Using the tips below, help kids find this month’s memory verse, 1 Timothy 4:8a. Finding verses: Guide children to open the Bibles to the marked page. Point to the word 1 Timothy at the top of the page as you say “First Timothy” aloud. Then guide children to find the big number 4 on the page. Explain that this is the chapter number. Finally, guide them to look under the big 4 for the little 8; this is the verse number. Tell them to leave their finger on the verse as you read the verse aloud. Then lead everyone to say the first two sentences of the verse together.

Then play a game with the verse. Sit in a circle and say the first sentence of the verse to the kid on your left, who says it to the next kid, and so on. At the end, everyone should say it together. Then say the second sentence to the kid on your right, who passes it around the circle, and then everyone says it together at the end. Finally, say the entire verse to the kid on your left to pass it around the circle. You may need to help some of the kids with this, which is perfectly fine. What You Say: “One of the ways we can practice hearing what God says is by saying verses out loud many times—so many times that we memorize them. Then when we need to hear God’s Word, even if we don’t have a Bible handy, we can think about the verse. It’s almost like God’s speaking directly to us!” (Tell kids about a time that a memorized Bible verse helped you through a situation.)

AFTER LARGE GROUP: CONNECTING THE STORY REVIEW THE STORY--25 minutes: (9:25; 11:25; 5:25) Hear and Do

Supplies: AP2

Give each kid an Activity Page. Read the two verses out loud. Explain that these are both verses that are important for all of us to hear and then do. Ask kids to think of some ways that they can love their neighbor as themselves. Help them be specific, not just say things like, “Be kind.” Maybe they can help the old lady next door pick up sticks in her yard. Or maybe they can be a friend to the kid who isn’t able to play all the fun games that everyone else plays at recess. Ask them each to choose one thing they can do this week, and draw a picture of it under Mark 12:31. Then ask kids to think of things their parents tell them to do that they have a hard time obeying. Maybe it’s going to bed without a fuss. Or maybe it’s taking their plate to the sink after a meal. Ask them each to choose one way they will obey their parents this week—something they usually don’t obey or have a hard time with—and draw a picture of it under Colossians 3:20. What You Say: “We need to practice hearing what God says, but usually that’s not all we need to do. Often God’s Word tells us to DO something, like these two verses do. Let’s remember to not just HEAR what God says, but also to DO it!”

Building Blocks

Supplies: bucket of blocks, Pillow

Divide kids into two teams. Give each team half of the blocks that are in the bucket, and give one team the pillow. The team with the pillow is the Sand Team, and the team without the pillow is the Rock Team. Instruct both teams to build a house out of their materials. The Sand Team will build their house on top of the pillow. The Rock Team will build theirs on a flat, solid surface in the room, such as a table or the floor. Once the houses are built, explain that you will read the Bible story out loud, and the kids should pretend to do—or actually do—the things to their houses that are described in the story, including making sure the “sand” house falls at the end. What You Say: “Our Bible story tells us that God wants us to hear His words and put them into practice. When we do, we’ll be like the house on the rock that stands tall and strong. One way you can hear what God says is by reading the Bible or by asking someone else to read it with you or to you. This week, take time each day to practice hearing what God says by reading or listening to His Word.

FUN GAME 

55 5-10 minutes (9:50; 11:50; 5:50)

Ask kids to sit in a circle with you, and explain that you’re going to play the “Telephone” game. Whisper a word or phrase into the first kid’s ear, who then whispers it to the second kid, and so on all the way around the circle. The last kid says it out loud and then compares it to the original word or phrase. Play several times. Feel free to choose your own words or phrases. Kids might enjoy doing tongue twisters, such as, “She sells seashells at the seashore,” or “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.” What You Say: “That was so fun, but it was sometimes hard to hear what the other person was whispering, wasn’t it? Why is it important to hear certain things? What did we learn about hearing today?”

(9:55-UNTIL; 11:55-UNTIL; 5:55-UNTIL) Prayer Request: Ask students what they need prayer for this week and take note for next week! Prayer:

Supplies: none

Ask kids to think about what they said they would do this week (look back at the first activity after large group if you need a refresher.) Then ask them to close their eyes and silently ask God to help them do those things this week. What You Say: “When you practice hearing what God says, you’ll know how to do what God says. But even more than that, when you make a habit of listening to God, you’ll know Him better. Dear God, help us all to hear what You say, do what you say, and to know You better! In Jesus’ name, amen!”

OPTIONAL DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: 1. What does it mean to practice hearing God’s voice? 2. How do we recognize God’s voice when we hear it? How do we know it’s not just our own imagination? 3. What are things we know from the Bible, about the way God speaks?
