Welcome and Announcements +Prelude........ “The King of Love My Shepherd Is” .... J. Wayne Kerr

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell†. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church††, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. †

Call to Worship ...................................................... Psalm 16 Minister: Protect me, O God, for in you I take refuge. People: I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.” As for the holy ones in the land, they are the noble, in whom is all my delight. Minister: The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot. People: The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; I have a goodly heritage. I bless the Lord who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me. Minister: I keep the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. All: You show me the path of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy; in your right hand are pleasures forevermore. Amen! Let us worship God!

Communion Anthem ....................................... K. Lee Scott “Gracious Spirit, Dwell With Me”

Sanctuary Choir Gracious Spirit, dwell with me, I would gracious be; help me now thy grace to see, I would be like thee; and, with words that help and heal, thy life would mine reveal; and, with actions bold and meek, for Christ, my Savior, speak. Truthful Spirit, dwell with me, I would truthful be; help me now thy truth to see, I would be like thee; and, with wisdom kind and clear, thy life in mine appear; and, with actions brotherly, speak Christ’s sincerity. Holy Spirit, dwell with me, I would holy be; show thy mercy tenderly, make me more like thee; separate from sin, I would and cherish all things good, and whatever I can give him who gave me thee. *Please stand if you are able. +The ushers may seat worshipers. INVITATION TO THE LORD’S TABLE You are invited and are welcome to participate in the Lord’s Supper if you are a baptized Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ, and a faithful member or adherent of this or some other congregation, recognized as belonging to the fellowship of Christian believers. If this does not describe you, we are glad you are here and commend to you this prayer for your use during this time of the Lord’s Supper. Lord Jesus, the burdens of my life are too great for me. I know that my heaviest burden is my own sin. My sin has made me estranged from God and it is too great for me to carry. You say to all sinners, including me, “Come to me all who are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest.” These are the words my guilty conscience longs for. Help me, Lord Jesus, to understand and believe your loving promise that I can have rest for my soul. And even more, that I can know you and have eternal life. Presiding Minister - Dr. Sean Michael Lucas Assisting Elders - Rev. Ben Griffith (8:30); Ruling Elder Hugh Bolton (11:00) Visitors - Visitors are encouraged to pick up a copy of the First Presbyterian Church newsletter in the Narthex or at the Welcome Center in the Fellowship Hall.

Notes on the Service There are two more subsections left in Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. The first deals with the various relationships in the Christian household (5:22-6:9); the second deals with the reality of spiritual warfare and the need to be clothed with Jesus’ virtues (6:10-20). This morning, we begin working our way into that first subsection—and one of the things we have to notice is that Paul tells us what it looks like to live under the control of the Spirit: it looks like wives submitting to their husbands and husbands loving their wives (5:22-33). In today’s culture, these verses are especially challenging, but what we will find is that a marriage that is shaped by obedience to Christ and by Christ’s self-sacrificial love models to the world what it looks like when Jesus makes all things new. Our worship service reminds us that all the true pleasure this life affords is found in relationship to the Triune God, the God who has come near to us by the Spirit of Jesus. Psalm 16 is both our call to worship and our first hymn. David’s song reminds us that “In your right hand are pleasures forevermore” (Psa 16:11). Only as we enjoy communion with our God will we know true pleasure; only as we enjoy communion with him will we know power to live Christ-shaped lives. Of course, we fail to live such lives—our sins are ever before us. But we confess our sins knowing that our God is faithful and kind, compassionate and loving. He raises up those who are bowed down because of their sins, crushed under the weight of their iniquities. He invites us to come and to find relief; when we look upon Jesus, dying on the cross in our place, our burden of guilt and shame rolls away into the place of death and we are clothed with new robes of righteousness. We are freed to live new lives as wives and husbands, children and parents, slaves and masters, employees and employers. But in case we forget what the Gospel does, not only do we have the Word, but we also have the sacrament. As you come to the table this morning, meditate on the new relationship that is yours in Christ. You are not a stranger, a widow, a rejected one—you are Christ’s own bride, Christ’s own flesh, Christ’s own body. As you participate in the Supper, Christ reminds you of your union with him—you have a common union, a communion or participation, in his flesh and blood, in the reality of his salvation purchased for you. Rejoice that Christ is the Lover of your soul!
