Experimental Lesson 4 June 9/10 2

Experimental Series at a Glance for Elevate (continued) Lesson 1: The Creator If you designed a world, what would it look like? It would probably have a lot of your favorite things in it. Looking at the world you made would tell someone a lot about you. God designed this whole world exactly the way he wanted it, and because of that, it can tell us a ton about who he is. All the things we learn through science can help us get to know God better. In fact, that’s why this world was made! Lesson 2: The Lab God made this world for a reason. Wherever we look, we learn more about him! The things he made are incredible, and so is the way he made them. This week, we’ll look at some huge parts of our universe, and through them, discover some awesome things about God. Lesson 3: The Scientists From the beginning, God wanted to share his creation. He gave us an incredible responsibility, to take care of and explore this incredible world. This week, we’ll look at our roles in God’s story, and learn how each one of us is known and designed by God. Lesson 4: The Reaction Just when everything in God’s world was going great, something terrible happened. People began to disobey God, and stopped living the way he made them to live. They did things God said were wrong, things we call sin. This looked like the end of God’s purpose for our world, but he had an amazing plan, a plan to show everyone how great his love for us is. Lesson 5: The Solution What happened in God’s world was a disaster, but God’s purpose for us didn’t end when we disobeyed him. He still has a plan to make us like new again, and would give anything to make that plan happen. When you see how much God loves you, everything changes. Lesson 6: The Purpose God made this world so we could know who he is. He gave it to us to care for, and wants every one of us to be all He made us to be. Every time we serve, defend, and love others, we’re showing them the same thing that changed our lives: God’s love.

Welcome and Opening Activity

10:00

Welcome everyone! My name is __________. We have so much to do today, it’s going to be super fun. Today, everything, our songs, our lesson, and our games, all use something super cool: magnets! In fact, I’ve got a magnetic game for some of you right now! It’s called “Red Elbow!” Game Title Slide: “Red Elbow” and clear audio

Even if you haven’t played it before, I think you’ll catch on quickly. I’m going to call out a part of your body and a color, like “Red Elbow.” Your job is to find that color, and put that part of your body on it, like it’s a magnet attracting you to that spot. The only rule is, you can’t touch anyone else, you have to find the colors in the room somewhere, not on any people or clothes. You also can’t push to get to the color, if a place is full, you have to find another spot. Ready? Let’s go! Fun game music! Do This: Yell out the following commands, one at a time. After each, wait for the majority of kids to complete the command. Once most of them have done it, say another command. Don’t wait for all the kids to find something, instead, keep this game moving quickly by giving them about ten seconds for each command.

Alright, back to the middle! Great job. You can sit back down. You were all like magnets for those different colors. We’ll be using magnets a lot today, because they can help us learn something super important about ourselves and God. First, though, let’s learn a little about each other with our Question of the Day!

Question of the Day

Question of the Day Video

(Auto Advance) QOTD Slide: What’s something you still have, even though it’s broken?

What’s something you still have, even though it’s broken? Maybe it’s an old pair of shoes, a game, or something that is special to you, even though it doesn’t work. Think about it, then ask the person next to you what their answer is. Then you can tell them yours! Do This: Emcee as the kids are sharing their answers. Encourage them to share with the people around them, and encourage any kid whose story you hear. Experimental Lesson 4 June 9/10 6

Know This: Allow kids time to interact with one another. Feel free to ask a few of them what their answer is.

The things we hang on to can tell us a lot about what we think is important. Sometimes, things stay special to us, even after they break. Worship Slide

Worship

5:00

The things we have break and get old, but there’s one thing that’s more important than any other. It’s the friendship that God wants to have with us! That friendship is why we love to sing, dance, and celebrate every time we’re together. God loves all of us, and is always there for us. That’s a great reason to worship him! Let’s stand and sing together. Song 1: Rock This Planet (Auto advance) Worship Slide

When we use the word “worship,” we mean showing God that we love him. That’s what we do when we sing, when we give, and when we spend time with God. Let’s take a moment to spend time with God now, and pray. God, thank you for loving us no matter what. Help us to get to know and love you better. Amen.

Bumper Video (1:00) (Auto-Advance) Series Title Slide: “Experimental”

Experimental Lesson 4 June 9/10 7

Experimenting is super fun. To “experiment” means to test something to figure out how it works. When you take something apart to see the wires and gears inside, or you try doing something a different way just to see what happens, you’re experimenting. That’s what we’re doing this whole series, experimenting to find out how God made our world to work. That’s why it’s called “Experimental.” Over the past few weeks, we’ve learned new things about God through science, and discovered that God has a purpose for this world, and for each one of us. Today, we get to experiment a bit more, and find out what happens when things go wrong. Before we get to all of that, though, let’s look at our memory verse for this series!

Memory Verse

5:00

Memory Verse Slide: Psalm 19:1- “The heavens tell about the glory of God. The skies show that his hands created them.” Do This: Read the verse from the screen.

That’s what this series is all about. Our world, from the sky to the seas, shows us so much about who God is. We see how powerful He is in every star. We see how much God cares about us when we think about how perfectly he made the earth. And we see how creative He is when we look at the beautiful world around us. This world is made by God, and never stops telling us about him. Let’s say that verse together, normally the first time. Do This: Read the verse with the kids.

This time, my hand will be like a volume meter. If it’s high in the air, you’ll be loud, but if it’s down by the ground, you’ll be quiet. Try to get louder or quieter as I raise and lower my hand! Ready? Do This: Say the verse with the kids, changing the “volume” of the room as you do. Feel free to repeat this a couple times, if there is time.

Good job. You only have a couple weeks left to work on that verse, so be sure to look it up at home, too.

Next, let’s check with Calvin, the scientist helping us learn about God and our world. Scientist Calvin- Episode 4: (8:00) (Auto advance) Series Title Slide: Experimental

It’s never fun to realize you’ve done something wrong. I think most of us know how Calvin feels. We’ve all done things we wish we could take back or fix, but just can’t. Maybe we worry, like Calvin, that we can’t be good enough, or that God won’t like us anymore when we do those things. I hope we’ll be able to find out what Calvin decides to do, but I think we’ll have to check in again later. While we wait, let’s play a magnetic game.

Group Activity

10:00

Know This: Since this is summer, our schedule looks different than usual. If you are able to do group time, you are encouraged to do it, as the closeness of a smaller group is a great thing for kids to experience. If you aren’t able to do this section in group time, keep following this script, and direct the activity from the stage.

Game Title Slide: “Magne-trick ”

I need two volunteers to help me out with this activity! Do This: Select two kids to play the activity. Do This: Make sure you have two lanyards with large paper clips attached to them ready to go, and a table for them to sit on. The other end of the lanyard should be weighted down with something readily available that won’t be harmed by magnets. (You could loop it through the holes in a giant stacking cup, or tie it around several markers.)

The first thing you need to know is that what I have here are called “Rare-Earth magnets.” They’re quite strong, so don’t stick them together! They’ll be tough to get apart. These magnets are attracted to each other, because they make what is called a “magnetic field.” Do This: Place one magnet on either side of your hand. The top one will hold the bottom one in place. If this doesn’t work, move them to your fingers. Show kids how the magnets pull each other, even through your hand. Experimental Lesson 4 June 9/10 9

They also attract metal things, like these paper clips. Each of you will get one of these magnets, and one of those giant paper clips. Your goal is to make one of the paper clips levitate for three seconds! You can lift up the paper clip with your hand, but then you have to hold the magnet just far enough away to make it float in the air. Do This: Demonstrate for the kids.

Once you get the paper clip floating, I’ll start counting to three. If you both get it, we’ll see who can hold theirs up the longest. Ready? Go! Fun Game Music!

Game Title Slide: “Magne-trick” and clear audio

Great job! You can sit down, but there are some questions that I want to ask everyone. Do any of you know how magnets work? Do This: Allow a couple of answers from kids.

Magnets are super cool. They attract some kinds of metal, and are used in a lot of our phones, computers, and other technology. Magnets attract each other, too. Why do you think that is? Do This: Allow a couple of answers from kids.

Let’s see what we can figure out. Do This: Show kids the two magnets separately, then hold them so they attach to each other.

These magnets seem made to be together. The two ends pull metal in, but they also push it away. If these two magnets represent us and God, then this is the way things were made to be. God made you for a reason, and part of that reason is to be his child. He wants to be your leader and friend, but all of us have a problem. Like Calvin talked about, we’ve all done things that we know are wrong, called sin. Those things changed our relationship with God. We turned away from him. To show what that is like, I’m going to turn this magnet around. Do This: Turn one magnet around, and show kids how it pushes the other one away.

Application

5:00 Experimental Lesson 4 June 9/10 10

Instead of being close to God, we push him away when we sin. We can’t even be close to him, because God is perfect. So what can we do? How can we turn back to God when we’ve already pushed him away? We can’t go back and fix the things we’ve done, but there is one thing you need to know. It’s a lesson I think Calvin learned today too. I’m going to let him tell you what it is. Calvin: God’s love (2:00) (Auto advance) Series Title Slide: Experimental

God loves you more than I can ever say. From the very beginning, he started a plan that would give you the chance to live the way he made you to. Even though we pushed him away, God keeps trying to be close to you, to show you how much he loves you. And his love isn’t because of anything you’ve done. It’s not something you can earn, or something you deserve. That also means, you can never lose God’s love. The moment we stop trying to push Him away, He’ll be there for us. 1 John 4:9- “How did God show his love for us? He sent his one and only Son into the world. He sent him so we could receive life through him. Do This: Read the verse from the screen.

Calvin talked about God’s plan for you. This verse tells us what that plan was. God showed how much he loves us by giving up his own Son, Jesus. Jesus came to show us God’s love, and to take the punishment we deserve for sin. We’ll hear that full story next time, but there’s one thing I want you to remember from today. Big Idea Slide: God loves me, no matter what I’ve done.

God loves me, no matter what I’ve done. There is nothing you can do that will ever stop God loving you. No matter how many times you’ve done things you know are wrong, no matter how much trouble you’ve gotten in, God has a plan for you, and that plan starts with you knowing that he’ll never give up on you. If you have questions about following God, ask any of the leaders in here, we’d love to talk with you and answer your questions about turning away from sin, and living for God. Experimental Lesson 4 June 9/10 11

Once you’ve decided to follow God, you can share God’s love with others, too. When we tell people about what Jesus did, we are giving them the greatest news in the world. You could be the one that helps someone become friends with God again.

Worship

8:00

Worship Slide

God’s love is a fantastic reason to worship him! We worship God because he is great and amazing, but most of all, we worship God because he decided to love us, even when we didn’t love him back. He cares about us, even when we didn’t make the choices he wanted us to. His love for us is never ending, and that’s why showing our love for him is so important. Let’s stand and sing to God together! Song 2: Love has Found Us (Auto-Advance) Worship Slide

God’s love is so incredible. This next song is an awesome way to remember that God made you for a reason. He made you to be His child, to follow and love him. No matter what happens, that is still true. Let’s sing “Remind Me” together. Song 3: Remind Me (Auto advance) Series Title Slide: Experimental

That was great, I love worshipping with all of you. You can sit down.

Wrap-Up

2:00

Let’s finish up by talking to God. To help us stay focused on Him, let’s close our eyes and bow our heads while we pray. Experimental Lesson 4 June 9/10 12

God, you are incredible. Wherever we look, this world shows how amazing you are. Help us to learn more about you this week. Amen. I’ve had so much fun hanging out with you all today, I hope to see you next week! Elevate Slide
