Camp RIO 10th Grade Curriculum Description General activity descriptions Canoeing: Student will develop an understanding of masterful paddling techniques. They will navigate the natural oxbow lake on our property while on long canoe boats. The curriculum will feature topics of safety, technique, communication and problemsolving. Lessons will also include elements of physics and natural history. Archery: Student will acquire skills in dexterity and aim with bows and arrows on a live archery range. The curriculum will focus on safety, technique and the required attitude traits of excellent marksmen. Lessons will also include elements of physics and history. Team-Building: Students will be given a series of problem-solving tasks which will require the implementation of teamwork, planning, communication, leadership skills, and critical thinking. The overall objective is to develop crucial life skills though play in a group setting. Geocaching: This activity allows for a reasonable degree of autonomy as students navigate through the enclosed woods with a GPS device in search of a hidden object. The curriculum will focus on navigational skills, utilizing technology in the wilderness and keen eyesight. Lessons will include problem-solving activities involving math, science and social studies.

10th-grade-specific activity descriptions ➢ Instruction for Canoeing and Archery will both include discussion of physical phenomena founded on the following concepts and guiding questions as they pertain to each of these activities: • Newton’s Laws of Motion o What are Newton’s Laws of Motion? o What causes motion? • Work, Power & Energy o What are three key components of work? o What is power and how do we measure it? o What forms of energy can we identify throughout the archery range? ➢ During team-building, staff will facilitate in-depth, group discussions following fun activities with some of the following guiding questions: • What is success? • How do we present, receive and implement ideas? • What character traits do leaders encompass? • How do the actions of individuals affect the group as a whole?

Camp RIO 10th Grade Curriculum Description ➢ During geocaching, student will wander into the woods to achieve a multi-cache challenge. The students will be required to answer questions on topics including, but not limited to, ecosystems, social studies, native RGV flora & fauna, force, energy, motion, mathematical reasoning, grammar, ELA and chemical reactions. Their responses to these questions will provide them the clue or name of the next cache they must locate with the help of a GPS device.
