East Cooper Baptist Church November 29, 2015 Thanksgiving and the Continual Feast Proverbs 15:12-17 12 A

scoffer does not like to be reproved; he will not go to the wise. 13 A glad heart makes a cheerful face, but by sorrow of heart the spirit is crushed. 14 The heart of him who has understanding seeks knowledge, but the mouths of fools feed on folly. 15 All the days of the afflicted are evil, but the cheerful of heart has a CONTINUAL FEAST. 16 Better is a little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure and trouble with it. 17 Better is a dinner of herbs where love is than a fattened ox and hatred with it. “In the book of Psalms alone we are reminded nearly fifty times to give thanks. The New Testament also reminds us nearly fifty times…When we hear the bible tell us “to be thankful” (Colossians 3:15), [it can be received as] an obligatory expression of spiritual courtesy towards God rather than an expression of an astounded, overwhelmed realization that we have received mind-blowing grace from Him. We have learned to say thank you without feeling thankful and to think it’s okay. It’s not okay. Thankless gratitude is like affectionless love. It’s like joyless happiness…it’s not okay. It’s not the real thing. And as long as we practice it, we are missing out on the joy God intends to give us through Thanksgiving.” Jon Bloom, www.desiringgod.org Question: What further benefit do we receive from the sacrifice and death of Christ on the cross? Answer: That by virtue thereof, our old man is crucified, dead and buried with him; that so the corrupt inclinations of the flesh may no more reign in us; but that we may offer ourselves unto him a sacrifice of thanksgiving. Heidelberg Catechism Question 43 How to have a glad heart: 1. Go to the wise and invite friendship. (v.12) 2. Give yourself to “understanding [which] seeks knowledge” as compared to “feeding on folly”. (v. 14) “The path of life leads upward for the prudent, that he may turn away from Sheol beneath.” Proverbs 15:24 “18 But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day. 19 The way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know over what they stumble.” Proverbs 4:18-19 3. Rejoice in the CONTINUAL FEAST that is ours because of the greatness of Christ. (Romans 5:1ff, Philippians 4:8, Titus 1:13-2:1) 4. Reverence the name and character of God. (vv. 16-17)
