FROM OUR PASTOR What are we to do?

17th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Recently I had a great conversation with two very thoughtful people about faith and life. At one point, the question arose: “Father, what are we to do in the face of the many challenges before us?” Each of us could list a litany of what those challenges might be—the Supreme Court serving up some interesting—and very poor— decisions lately. This is an especially pertinent question for parents, who desire the best for their children. Young people are awash in the opinions of others, opinions which come fast and furious through a whole variety of means. For me, before we answer the question “What are we to do?” we must first answer another very basic question. It is the question, “Who are we?” Who we are will inform what we are to do when faced with difficult situations. I claim to be a Christian. If I am not going to be absurd in my claim, I must allow Christ to form me by his teachings and grace, since to be Christian is to be a follower of Christ. I come to know the teachings of Christ by means of the ministry of the Church he has established. He established the Church precisely for the work of proclaiming the good news of his teachings and grace until the end of time. While I may, at times, fail to live up to the teachings of Christ, nevertheless, I hold those teachings to be sacred and any failure on my part is followed by a recommitment to try again. Seventeenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

PLEASE PRAY FOR THE SICK

(From Our Pastor continued from page 1)

To add someone to the prayer list each week in the bulletin, you can write the name on the list on the narthex bulletin board or you can call the parish office. In order to keep the list fresh, only the names requested each week will be put in the bulletin. If you would like someone prayed for by our prayer chain, go to www.joanofarc.org and click on “Prayer Request”

All of this means, however, that I may find myself at odds with certain opinions present in the general culture when those opinions are contrary to the good news of Jesus. This can be painful to endure. Most of us do not like conflict, and disagreements about very important things can often devolve into just that. Here are a few pointers to help us in that struggle. • First, we should see all people as made in God’s image. It always helps to look for the best in others. Villainizing the opposition is a poor way to champion a cause. • Second, we must see the teachings of Christ, as they come to us through the Holy Catholic Church, as being given for our happiness and well-being. We are Christian because we find these teachings to be life-giving. • Third, when we discover something that is lifegiving, we seek to share it with those we love. This is best done in a positive, constructive way, not in a way that is aggressive or hostile towards others. Saint Francis de Sales’ maxim that we catch more flies with honey than with vinegar is forever true. • Fourth, we must never, ever capitulate on the clear teachings of Christ and his Church, no matter how forceful the opposition. Aesop is correct: slow but steady wins the race—or better—slow but steady wins over the culture. It seems as if the moral issues which set Christians apart from the culture as a whole continue to grow. From the perspective of the civil law this began in 1965 with Griswald verses Connecticut and the legalization of contraception. The abortion decision followed shortly thereafter. The issues of gay marriage and the conscientious objection from coerced participation in immoral acts are the latest challenges we face. One obvious note of hope in all of this is the slow change in opinion on pro-life issues. I believe that we have been successful in making our culture more pro-life because we have taken the approach delineated above, an approach which is both loving and uncompromising. It is loving because it is proposed gently and with deep concern for others. It is uncompromising because it sees the good news of Jesus as being a source of light and life, a source which we will not allow to be denied to others. We will only offer the best to those we love.

HOST FAMILIES NEEDED

PREP STAFF NEEDED

The annual Confirmation Retreat presented by The National Evangelization Team (NET) will be held on Saturday, October 10, from 1:00-5:00 p.m.in the SJA gym. The twelve team members will arrive on Friday, October 9, at about 5:00 p.m. and we will need families to host them overnight. They travel in pairs, so each family would need to host at least two team members. They will want to be at the school early on Saturday to set up and prepare. If you could provide this service or have questions, please contact Terri La Follette at (419) 866-6177 ext. 105 or [email protected]. If you are able to host more than two team members, please inform us how many.

SJA PREP classes will begin on September 9 and we are actively planning for the coming year. Positions are available for teachers and assistants at the primary level (grades 1-4). We are looking for adults who enjoy children and are willing to share their faith with the youth of our parish. Classes are held on Wednesday evenings from 7:00-8:15 p.m., September through mid-May. Please consider joining the PREP staff in supporting our children in their faith journey. To volunteer or for more information, please contact Terri La Follette at (419) 866-6177 ext. 105 or [email protected].

ECUMENICAL BEREAVEMENT The next meeting will be held on August 4, from 3:00-4:30 p.m. at St. Patrick of Heatherdowns, in the Emmaus Room in the church building. The speaker will be Rita Hoff, St. Patrick of Heatherdowns Parish and Bereavement Team member. Her topic will be “Circle of Grief”. When a loved one has died, there are common grief reactions we must process. Grief impacts our life in a physical, emotional, spiritual, mental, and behavioral way. The more we understand this circle of grief, the smoother our transition can be. This group, sponsored in part by St. Joan of Arc, offers support to people who are grieving the death of a loved one. If you have any questions, you may contact Rita Hoff at (419) 724-4772 or [email protected].

NEW ONLINE GIVING PROGRAM You can access a new online giving program via the giving tab in the parish website or the parish mobile app. This new program, WeShare, gives the parish additional flexibility over the previous program. WeShare currently is set up to receive one-time or recurring donations for Sunday offertory through checking or saving accounts, credit cards, and debit cards. In the near future, WeShare will also allow for such things as donations to the Capital Campaign and purchase of symphony tickets. If you would like additional information on online giving, please contact Joanne Root in the parish office. Page #4

CYO FOOTBALL My name is Eric Kinor and I am stepping in as the SJA football commissioner this year. As a part of the CYO program, I want to let parents know that football is a program offered for boys in the 5th-8th grades. If your son is looking to join us on the field this year, please head to sjawarriors.com for registration which is now open. There will be a parent meeting and equipment handout on August 9, at 1:00 p.m. in the SJA gym. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me at [email protected]. We are looking forward to another great, fun season!

PREP REGISTRATION Summer is rapidly winding down and we are looking forward to the beginning of another school year. We hope that all families in our parish have made a commitment to their children's religious education, whether it be at St. Joan of Arc School or our Parish Religious Education Program (PREP). PREP classes will begin on Wednesday, September 9, at 7:00 8:15 pm. Parents, students, and teachers will meet in the church for an opening address by Fr. Adam followed by music and introductions of this year's PREP teachers and youth ministry staff. For families that have not already registered their children, registration forms are available in the church on the table next to the chapel. It is helpful for us to have the registrations as early as possible for ordering and planning purposes. Parish policies regarding the Sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation are: 1. Children expecting to receive their First Holy Communion (preceded by First Reconciliation) must attend a formal religious education program for one year prior to beginning First Communion preparation classes. 2. Children expecting to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation at the end of 8th grade must attend a formal religious education program in the 7th grade to be accepted into the 8th grade PREP Confirmation Program. 3. Parents who choose to home school their children and parents of students attending the Jr. Academies are asked to contact Terri La Follette at [email protected] or (419) 866-6177 ext. 105 for registration information and teaching resources.

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Responding to the call of Jesus, St. Joan of Arc Parish is a Catholic Community, guided by the Holy Spirit, striving to do God’s will. We encourage spiritual growth and invite full, active and conscious participation of all generations through prayer, stewardship and fellowship.

EXCLAIM! TODAY, JULY 26 Join us for Exclaim, Toledo's largest outdoor Christian music festival, today (Sunday) starting at 1:00 p.m. at the CYO fields. Matt Maher and Francesca Battistelli are the featured artists. There will be games, food (picnic lunches are also welcome), music, booths from local Catholic ministries and area businesses, all around fun. Look for our banner. Gates will open at 1:00 p.m. Join us at St. Joan of Arc's Hospitality Tent at Exclaim. Open from 2:00-6:00 p.m., the SJA tent is a great place to meet up with your SJA friends, grab a drink or snack and enjoy the music! Look for our tent and banner by the football posts in the concert area. All are invited!

WEDNESDAY, JULY 29 Parish Picnic/Soccer $Free Life Teen will be kicking off the parish picnic with a day of soccer at 3:00 p.m. at the parish field. Immediately following our game will be a 5:00 p.m. holy hour. The conclusion of our night will end with the Parish Picnic at 6:00 p.m.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 5 SAINT SERIES CONTINUED On Monday, August 3, at 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday August 4, at 9:30 a.m. in the Community Room, we will show a DVD on “God’s Doorkeeper: Brother Andre Bessett” (60 min.). On January 6, 1937, the death of a humble doorkeeper for a boys’ college drew over a million people to Montreal for his funeral. For 40 years, Brother Andre welcomed people at the door and became known as a miraculous healer.

ANNUAL PARISH PICNIC The annual parish picnic is this week, Wednesday, July 29, from 6:00–9:00 p.m. on St. Joan of Arc grounds. The Knights of Columbus SJA Council is organizing and sponsoring with the support and help from our women’s group “Daughters of Mary”. We welcome any parishioners’ help with the many tasks needed to make our picnic a success. We especially need help with the following: 1. Set-up 2. Children’s games 3. Clean-up. Contact Tim Oser at [email protected] or (419) 4109520 or Brian Knapke at [email protected] or (419) 868-5106 if you would like to help. Hamburgers, hotdogs, and beverages will be supplied. Each family is asked to bring a dish to serve eight people. Last names beginning with A to L, please bring a salad. Last names beginning with M to Z, please bring a dessert. Mark your calendars now and plan to attend. This is a great opportunity for all parishioners to gather together with old friends and make new ones. FUN is on the menu.

Sky Zone, Holland - $20 Finish out the summer with Mass and Sky Zone Toledo! Life Teen will depart together for Sky Zone immediately following 8:30 a.m. mass. Participants must have a parental waiver signed which can be found here: https://toledostore.skyzone.com/waiver/
