Launch your global career at Swansea University In 2014 Swansea University achieved its ambition to be a top 30 research university. It soared up the league table from 52nd in 2008, to 26th in the UK. This is the largest jump in the rankings of any research-intensive university in the UK. Swansea University is comfortably one of the top 30 research intensive universities in the UK according to the recent government sponsored review of the quality of research in every university (The Research Excellence Framework – REF 2014). 90 per cent of Swansea research was judged to be internationally excellent in its impact and a third of our research is now classed as world-leading. Benefiting from world-class research The University’s academic staff are research-active, which helps to keep teaching alive, relevant and up-to-date. Being taught by the people who have written key texts for your course can be particularly memorable and inspirational. It also means that you learn about new theories and technologies as they are being developed and put into practice.
Innovative learning and teaching The University is always looking for innovative ways to add value to your learning experience by using best practice to enhance the quality of our teaching and giving you more opportunities to let us know what you think of how you’re taught. The University uses a wide range of methods and technologies, such as scenario simulations, blogs, podcasts, vodcasts, and social networking, as well as delivering interactive lectures using audience response systems known as ‘clickers’.
Whilst at ICWS you will use Moodle and when you progress to the University stage of the pathway you will use the Blackboard virtual learning environment, which facilitates online learning and teaching. Through Blackboard, you’ll have access to course materials, handouts and lecture notes, as well as shared areas for group work, online discussions, and exchanging ideas with your fellow students. The Swansea Academy of Learning and Teaching was established in 2009 to provide the strategic advice and direction necessary to ensure that we continue to offer an excellent learning experience and make the most of emerging teaching technologies.

An undergraduate pathway is a single course comprising three or four stages of study. After successfully completing this programme, you will be awarded a Bachelor’s degree from Swansea University.
A postgraduate pathway is a single course comprising two stages of study. When you successfully complete the pathway you will be awarded a Master’s degree from Swansea University.
University Foundation

The University Foundation programme is stage 1 of the undergraduate pathway. The transition from high school to university is a big step, perhaps the most important in your life. The staff at ICWS understand this, and will provide you with ongoing guidance and support, as well as the knowledge and skills you need. This partnership between you and the ICWS staff will make your transition a smooth one.
The Pre-Master’s programme is stage 1 of the postgraduate pathway. It is one or two semesters long, depending on your chosen pathway. It has been designed to prepare international students who have not qualified for direct entry to Swansea University’s Masters’ degrees.
First Year Degree The First Year Degree is stage 2 of the undergraduate pathway. You will experience the first year curriculum of Swansea University, but with smaller class sizes (except for integrated first year) and more academic contact hours. The integrated first year (in non-business related subjects) gives you the full University Level One syllabus based in your university college, with some additional contact hours and tutorial classes with ICWS. This teaching and learning experience will enable you to develop your knowledge and understanding for stages 3 and 4 of your chosen degree.
Second Year Degree and Final Year Degree The Second and Final Year Degree are stages 3 and 4 of the undergraduate pathway, and are taught by Swansea University.
Undertaking the Pre-Master’s programme will allow you to adjust to the rigorous research and independent study requirements of a postgraduate degree and help you get the most out of your Master’s studies at Swansea University.
EYkl]jk The Master’s degree is stage 2 of the postgraduate pathway, and is taught by Swansea University.
English Language English Language is a full-time course specifically designed for international students who need to improve their level of English before starting undergraduate or postgraduate academic studies. The course suits students with different levels of English competence and is offered by Swansea University’s English Language Training Services (ELTS). You can start an English Language course in September, January, April, June or July.

Activities at ICWS If you are interested in getting involved in sports and societies, Swansea University is the perfect university for you. The Swansea University campus offers a wide range of recreational and sport facilities for you to use, including a gym, playing fields, sports halls and a 50 metre swimming pool. Where is Swansea? Situated between the coast in the south and the stunning green hills in the north, Swansea is the ideal location to see Britain’s beaches and countryside at their best. It is also a superb centre for shopping and dining.
Mumbles. Some of the best sporting facilities in Wales are just two or three minutes away from the campus and accommodation is within easy reach. Regular bus services run to the Student Village and to popular student areas such as Uplands, the Marina, Brynmill and Mumbles.
Swansea is conveniently located near the M4 motorway, which links it directly with London and Heathrow Airport, just a three hour drive or train journey away.
Swansea is a very affordable city in which to live and study. You will need to budget for a minimum of £1,015 per month of study, up to a maximum of nine months, to cover your living expenses while studying in the UK.
It has excellent direct rail links to London and other major UK cities, and with Cardiff International Airport just 45 minutes away, budget airlines make it quick and easy to visit other European countries.
Swansea’s climate
As Wales’ second largest city, Swansea boasts the impressive infrastructure you would expect from a modern European city. Its beautiful seaside location makes it a favoured destination for tourists. From the campus you can travel along the seafront to the modern marina and the city centre, or to the vibrant coastal village of
The climate in South Wales is temperate and in the summer regularly reaches 20–25 degrees Celsius. This is ideal weather for the beach, which is just across the road from the campus. Winters are colder, with snow sometimes falling on the hills to the north of the city. However, Swansea’s seaside location usually protects the city itself from the coldest British weather.

Getting around Frequent buses run from directly outside our residences and will take between 8 and 12 minutes to reach either campus. You can buy a student bus pass for as little as £350 for the whole year, making Swansea one of the most affordable cities in the UK to travel around. Cycling is a very popular way for students to get around affordably and quickly. With many bike lanes throughout this very flat city, this is often the most convenient way to get from Point A to Point B. Swansea University is the birthplace of world-famous bike company, Mango Bikes – be sure to ride like a local!

Politics and International Relations is not just about studying government institutions and international relationships. It is a discipline that has explored different visions for a more just society for thousands of years, while also addressing today’s most pressing challenges.
