WELCOME FROM OUR VICE-CHANCELLOR Swansea University is ambitious for its students, staff, and for the institution as a whole. We are on a steep upward trajectory making rapid progress towards our aspiration of being one of the top 200 universities in the world by our centenary in 2020.

Professor Richard B. Davies Vice-Chancellor, Swansea University

Swansea University is an ambitious UK university with a long history of working closely with industry, ensuring that courses are relevant to employers’ needs and that the University’s worldclass research has a real impact on global issues. Swansea University is on a strong upward trajectory which is attracting significant investment to provide the most up-to-date facilities. In the Research Excellence Framework exercise (REF) 2014, Swansea became one of the top 30 research universities in the UK. 90% of Swansea’s research was judged to be internationally excellent in its impact and a third of its research is now classed as world-leading. This means that students are taught by, and work alongside, some of the best academic staff in the country and even the world. It is a privilege to be the Vice Chancellor of such a successful university. We pride ourselves on being an international university with many of our degree schemes offering students the opportunity to spend a year or semester studying abroad at one of our partner universities

across the world, further enhancing career opportunities in a highly competitive graduate marketplace. The momentum we have gained as one of the UK’s most ambitious, research-led universities has made us a natural choice for many talented students, and the increase in applications to study here are a clear indication of our success. In the recent 2016 National Student Survey, overall student satisfaction at Swansea University was 90% and Swansea University has been awarded 5-Stars for excellence in the global QS Stars quality assessment, placing the University amongst other world-leading institutions to have also achieved 5-Stars such as Harvard and Oxford. I believe that we have achieved the right balance of excellent teaching and research, matched by a superb quality of life. I hope you will join us in our aspiration of being one of the top 200 universities in the world by our centenary in 2020.

ICWS Your pathway to Swansea University 2017/18

Launch your global career at Swansea University In 2014 Swansea University achieved its ambition to be a top 30 research university. It soared up the league table from 52nd in 2008, to 26th in the UK. This is the largest jump in the rankings of any research-intensive university in the UK. Swansea University is comfortably one of the top 30 research intensive universities in the UK according to the recent government sponsored review of the quality of research in every university (The Research Excellence Framework – REF 2014). 90 per cent of Swansea research was judged to be internationally excellent in its impact and a third of our research is now classed as world-leading. This means students are taught by, and work alongside, some of the best academic staff in the world.

Benefiting from world-class research The University’s academic staff are research-active, which helps to keep teaching alive, relevant and up-to-date. Being taught by the people who have written key texts for your course can be particularly memorable and inspirational. It also means that you learn about new theories and technologies as they are being developed and put into practice.

Innovative learning and teaching The University is always looking for innovative ways to add value to your learning experience by using best practice to enhance the quality of our teaching and giving you more opportunities to let us know what you think of how you’re taught. The University uses a wide range of methods and technologies, such as scenario simulations, blogs, podcasts, vodcasts, and social networking, as well as delivering interactive lectures using audience response systems known as ‘clickers’.

Whilst at ICWS you will use Moodle and when you progress to the University stage of the pathway you will use the Blackboard virtual learning environment, which facilitates online learning and teaching. Through Blackboard, you’ll have access to course materials, handouts and lecture notes, as well as shared areas for group work, online discussions, and exchanging ideas with your fellow students. The Swansea Academy of Learning and Teaching was established in 2009 to provide the strategic advice and direction necessary to ensure that we continue to offer an excellent learning experience and make the most of emerging teaching technologies.

Support from professional bodies Many of the University’s courses are accredited by professional bodies, offer project placements with industry, and provide opportunities to apply knowledge in a practical setting. Visit the website to see some of the accreditations: swansea.ac.uk/ undergraduate/careers-and-employability.

Real world experience Swansea University’s long history of working with business, industry, commerce and the public sector adds real value to a student’s education. The University listens closely to employers when they tell them what skills and experiences they demand of their graduate employees, and courses are tailored to ensure students gain the professional and high level skills that will enable them to thrive in today’s increasingly competitive world. Many courses are accredited by professional bodies, offer project placements with industry and give students the opportunity to apply knowledge in a practical setting.
