PREFACE This little volume consists of seven discourses in honour of our Lord Jesus. Upon no theme is the true minister so much at home, and yet no subject more completely surpasses his ability. We love the subject, though we are lost in it. It is possible to describe all other things more or less accurately; but words are not capable of setting forth the redeeming grace and dying love of Jesus; yet we would fain be confined to this one topic for life, and be set free to speak of nothing else but our Beloved. As the harp of Anacreon refused all other themes and would resound ‘love alone’, so would we gladly become for ever silent save only upon the famous deeds and adorable person of our Lord. ‘Arms and THE MAN’ we sing, but ah how feebly! Certainly we can never speak well enough of him whose name is Wonderful, for his work is honourable and glorious and his righteousness endureth for ever. We cannot content ourselves with anything which we can write concerning him, for, as the pen glides along, the heart glows yet more and more. 7

CHRIST’S GLORIOUS ACHIEVEMENTS

‘My Christ he is the Lord of lords, He is the King of kings He is the Sun of righteousness With healing in his wings. My Christ, he is the heaven of heaven My Christ what shall I call? My Christ is first, my Christ is last, My Christ is All in All.’

May the readers of these sermons be enabled by the Spirit of God in some degree to make increase in their knowledge of Christ. He alone is worth knowing; all other wisdom will fade away. Right well we know that none can reveal Christ to the heart but the Holy Ghost, and therefore with prayer for his divine enlightening we commit these pages to his condescending care, asking that they may prove to be good for edification. May the Lord Jesus be glorified by this little work. Thus humbly prays: C H SPURGEON
