Gleaming containers look more like jewelry for your countertop than food storage. Buy ones that boast a lacquered finish on the label. They have a protective coating that keeps the copper from developing a patina over time. Handwash with dish soap and water, using a soft sponge to avoid scratches.

Here’s a chic design move: Replace a bank of upper cabinets with a wall of thick (two inches looks nice and substantial) shelves, and style them with your dishes, serving pieces, even art. You can find ready-made MDF versions online. Or, for a custom look, have a hardware store cut standard 2-inch-by10-inch pine boards to size, and coat them with glossy white paint. Float them on the wall or mount them with curvy brackets.

A hefty board equals a serious (-looking) cook. Condition it at least once a month with foodgrade mineral oil, and use it only for produce; fish, meat, and poultry should get a plastic board. Wash with dish soap and water after each use, and dry thoroughly with a clean towel to avoid warping. If your board is reversible, flip it every few weeks for even wear.
