A world of opportunities WHATEVER YOU CHOOSE TO STUDY, YOU WILL BENEFIT FROM CAREERENHANCING OPPORTUNITIES. THIS CAN BE ANYTHING FROM WORKING ON REAL PROJECTS, USING INDUSTRY-STANDARD EQUIPMENT OR LEARNING IN SIMULATED ENVIRONMENTS. YOU WILL ALSO HAVE THE CHANCE TO TAKE AN INDUSTRY PLACEMENT, FIND A PART-TIME JOB OR PARTICIPATE IN VOLUNTEERING PROJECTS – ALL THINGS THAT EMPLOYERS CONSIDER WHEN HIRING GRADUATES.

Placement opportunities

We believe that providing students with opportunities for work experience is vital to improving career prospects and degree outcomes. At the University of Portsmouth, each faculty has a dedicated placements office to ensure as many students as possible benefit from real work experience. Placements are paid and are typically taken between the second and final year of your degree programme. As well as providing students with the opportunity to explore the world of work, a placement also benefits employers by offering them a chance to take on fresh, intelligent and enthusiastic young people. Students have taken up placements in a wide range of organisations such as Boeing, Philips, Amazon, IBM, BMW, GlaxoSmithKline and many others. Erasmus+

You may have the opportunity to participate in the Erasmus+ scheme as part of your studies. Erasmus+ is a European Commission-funded programme which enables students to study and/or work in another Erasmus participating country as part of their degree. You will study in classes alongside full time British and international students. As well as attending lectures, you will also take part in smaller seminars and tutorial classes, giving you the opportunity to work closely with, and get to know, other students on your course. Part-time work

Many students choose to work while they study and Portsmouth is a city with a wide range of part-time jobs. Working part-time will help you gain valuable work experience and start to develop the skills that employers are looking for your graduate career. However, we recommend that you always check your university timetable before organising your part-time hours.

‘I worked in two places in the US for my internship. My first role was a Catering and Events Assistant for Country Club Jupiter, Florida, where I was able to help put together weddings and Bar Mitzvahs among a lot of other events. My second role was a Waitress in Glen Arbor Golf Club, New York. My most enjoyable part was serving President Clinton and movie stars such as Anthony Mackie and Catherine Zeta Jones.’

Portsmouth is one of the most affordable cities for students living in the south of the UK (NatWest Student Living Index 2017). Aside from your tuition costs, we estimate that you will need £9,500 per year to cover living costs including accommodation, food, clothing, travel and leisure activities. Religious facilities

The University of Portsmouth has its own chaplaincy that offers a space to relax, meet friends and host religious events. The chaplaincy also includes an Islamic prayer room and offers information on other support services. In addition, Portsmouth has a number of other places of worship within walking distance of ICP, including three mosques, and both Roman Catholic and Anglican Cathedrals. Rich history

Home to the Royal Navy, Portsmouth is proud of its maritime heritage. The Historic Dockyard is home to world-class warships and attractions which showcase more than 800 years of naval history. Don’t miss the chance to see Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory, the Victorian powerhouse HMS Warrior 1860, and Mary Rose Museum.
