VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES 2018/19 Our Upward League is volunteer-driven and that’s what makes this league unique! In order to have a successful season, every family is asked to volunteer in some capacity. Below are descriptions of our volunteer opportunities. Please review this information. During the registration process you will be asked about your volunteer preferences. The volunteer coordinator will then follow-up with you regarding details and scheduling. Pre-Season Volunteers Evaluation nights Tuesday, November 13 and Thursday, November 15, 6 – 8pm Welcome desk – Check in all participants, confirm registration information is correct for each participant, collect signatures. Basketball sizing table – Set up the table with basketball jerseys organized by size, help participants with their sizing needs. Cheer sizing table – Set up the table with cheer jerseys and skorts organized by size, help participants with their sizing needs. Basketball evaluations – Conduct evaluations for an assigned age group using check list to enter all results. TIME COMMITMENT: 2 hours per evaluation night

Season Volunteers Basketball Coach/ Assistant Coach – Attend the pre-season coaches meeting in December. Using the Upward weekly practice guides, conduct age-appropriate basketball drills and teach basketball skills, facilitate team huddles, demonstrate good sportsmanship and a healthy team spirit. On game day, manage team line-ups and substitutions, offer positive support and encouragement to all players. Maintain regular communication with the parents of the players. Practice guides and game line-ups are provided. Basketball Coach Training will be offered. No basketball knowledge required. TIME COMMITMENT: 2 hours per week (1 practice, 1 game) Cheer Coach/ Assistant Coach – Attend the pre-season coaches meeting in December. Using the Upward weekly practice guides, teach age-appropriate cheer formations and cheers, facilitate team huddles, and demonstrate good sportsmanship and a healthy team spirit. On game day, manage team line-ups, offer positive support and encouragement to all cheerleaders. Maintain regular communication with the parents of the cheerleaders. Practice guides and game line-ups are provided. Cheerleading Coach Training will be offered. No cheerleading knowledge required. TIME COMMITMENT: 2 hours per week (1 practice, 1 game) Referee – Help teach and enforce the rules of Upward basketball during the games. You will typically officiate two games per weekend. Referee training is offered. Prior basketball experience is a plus, but not required. TIME COMMITMENT: 1-2 hours per week on Friday evening, Saturday morning, OR Saturday afternoon Practice Supervisor – Be the go-to person for coaches and assistant coaches, help ensure practices are running smoothly and be available to answer any questions from parents/guardians. Practice supervisors will also set out/ tidy up basketballs before and after practice. TIME COMMITMENT: 1 – 2 hours per week during your child’s practice night

Game Day Supervisor – Check-in teams and get players lined up for tunnel entrance. Coordinate tunnel entrance with announcer in the sound booth. Supervisors will also help ensure that games run smoothly and code of conduct is being followed. Training will be provided. TIME COMMITMENT: Friday evening or half-day on Saturday; 2- 3 times during the season Scorekeeper – Control the scoreboard during your child’s game. We try to have 1-2 scorekeepers per team so that you will not have to keep score every week. Scorekeeping is a great way to watch your child in action as you get a front row seat! Training will be provided. No experience required-- if you can push a button, you can keep score! TIME COMMITMENT: 1 hour per week during your child’s game Greeter – Welcome guests as they arrive to the games. Facilitate crowd control by opening and closing the gym doors at the appropriate times. You will be able to watch your child’s game after greeting. Greeters can also serve as Game Day Monitors in the gym after their ‘greeting’ duties are done. TIME COMMITMENT: 15-20 minutes before your child’s game Half Time Devotions Coordinator - Using the Upward guide, formulates the prayer and determines the game or activity for each week to be performed during each half-time.
