From the Principal Private Secretary

SIR ROBERT ARMSTRONG

FALKLANDS

CAMPAIGN DINNER

The Prime Minister has seen your minute of 13 September, and is grateful for the work done in drawing together a list of guests for this dinner. The list is at present a bit long, when it is borne in mind that five places will be needed for people from here, including the Prime Minister, Mr. Thatcter, Clive Whitmore, John Coles and Bernard Ingham: I am not proposing to ask the Prime Minister to include my name on the list. But it looks as if the list ought to be pruned by three names or so, or at least some names should be held back on a reserve list until we see if we get refusals from those expected to attend. The Prime Minister is also not yet happy about the balance of the list. She has noted in particular that the Commanders of HMS SHEFFIELD, HMS COVENTRY and HMS ARDENT are not included, and she wonders whether there is sufficient representation of the Merchant Marine.

She agrees that it would be invidious, as you say, to include

Mr. Cranley Onslow. Since the Ministry of Defence are in any case reconsidering the list, could you please have these points considered also. In case it is not possible for you to let me have revisions before the Prime Minister leaves for the Far East, I will arrange to take the list with me, so that revisions to it could be cleared with us by telegram.
