“ THE ONLY SOURCE OF KNOWLEDGE IS EXPERIENCE.” – Albert Einstein

What Einstein knew is that we grow from experiencing new situations and can only master our abilities through practice. Lawyers are specifically trained to face new, complex issues by researching the recorded past experiences of others and to use this knowledge as guidance to make a difference in our own lives and communities. Law school was exactly that—a look back at the recorded events and experiences that shaped our great nation and our individual lives as citizens. As practicing attorneys, we look back and rely on the doctrine of stare decisis to find the resolution of a case or to support our position as we prepare for a trial. For the Record is our annual look back, establishing the “precedent,” if you will, for the OSBF. It’s an opportunity to share with you the amazing work and successes of the past year and to set the stage for the future. Part of that future is growing the OSBF social media community. We’re currently on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. We believe everyone has a story, and when you connect with us on social media, you will see how your story intersects with others who work to make the law fair for all. Did you know the Library of Congress embarked on an initiative to archive every tweet from the social media platform, Twitter? The purpose is to record the tweets for research. Whether you want to take your place in our nation’s history or our organization’s history, I encourage you to connect with us on your preferred social media platform. But don’t just meet up with us— connect with the OSBF grantees you help support to see in real time how they are able to help the most legally-vulnerable populations in Ohio.

Follow Me:

Thank you for all you do to improve the lives of those around you. Whether it’s supporting a law-related grantee or helping an individual get the legal tools they need, the knowledge and experience you provide makes a difference.

THIS IS OUR RECORD OF THE WORK WE HAVE ACCOMPLISHED. I’m going to share a secret. I have a greeting card collection. I’ve been saving birthday, thank you, congratulations and sympathy cards given to me by friends and family for over twenty-five years. Why? I relish reading them time and again. I get a flood of memories. By virtue of their handwritten nature I remember that person and my relationship with them—our time together at that point in my life and their part in my personal story. It is a wonderfully heartwarming experience. Just like my card collection, our annual report captures the essence of what this nonprofit organization is all about. Every page reminds us that we are about people. Helping people and building relationships that make Ohio and our justice system stronger. This is our record of the work we have accomplished. We can look at this today, tomorrow, ten or even twenty years from now and we will be reminded of who we have helped, who made it happen and what we have accomplished in the spirit of our mission. I invite you to continue with us on our journey and become part of our story.

GRANTS

Housing Research & Advocacy Center According to the National Council on Aging, financial scams targeting older adults have become so prevalent, they are considered “the crime of the 21st century.” In 2010, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau estimated that older adults in the United States lost $3 billion as a result of financial exploitation. The same population is frequently discriminated against when seeking mortgages and is often targeted by predatory lenders. Through a grant from OSBF, the Housing Research and Advocacy Center (Housing Center) based in Cleveland, Ohio combatted this issue by creating a project that educates the aging population and their advocates about fair housing laws. In 2014, during five educational workshops, 222 people participated and learned how to protect their rights and to recognize violations. The Housing Center produced two educational videos on the topic and distributed more than 800 “Fair Housing for Seniors” guides to people in need around the state.

Every year, thousands of men, women and children fall into the hands of human traffickers around the world. Even in Ohio, victims can find themselves defrauded or coerced into relinquishing their liberty. To maintain control, traffickers force people to commit illegal, often humiliating acts resulting in severe emotional trauma and long criminal records. These records can inhibit survivors of trafficking from gaining access to housing, employment and other basic human needs. Advocating Opportunity (AO) is an organization changing the way human trafficking survivors receive help. Through a grant from OSBF, AO trains legal professionals, courts, law enforcement and advocates on the rights of human trafficking victims. This includes information on Ohio’s House Bill 262 which expunges an individual’s criminal record if the crimes committed were a result of being trafficked. AO is an inclusive, person-centered service provider and works with survivors at any stage of their recovery to offer legal tools tailored to each client’s need to enable them to rebuild their lives.

MY RECORD EXPUNGED ALLOWED ME TO GAIN INDEPENDENCE AGAIN.” – Michelle Moore,

HONOREES Frederick J. Ball In 1960, for the record, Kennedy defeats Nixon; Russia shoots down Gary Powers’ U-2 spy plane; Hitchcock’s Psycho debuts; Ohio State wins the NCAA basketball championship and The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland, employing its own lawyers for the first time, opens two offices—a civil division and a criminal division. As a Legal Aid Society board member and then president during the 50s and 60s, Fred Ball spearheaded this historic change 55 years ago. After law school at Columbia University, Fred practiced for 17 years at Johnson Law before becoming general counsel and director at Security Federal Savings & Loan, now FirstMerit Bank. As a young attorney elected treasurer of Cleveland’s Legal Aid Society, he realized it had become “a private club of prestigious lawyers contracting the work to private attorneys who had lost the aggressive advocacy of its mission.” Fred worked to transition to offices with paid staff including lawyers driven by a mission to serve. Fred has committed his time, energy and money to ensure high-quality legal aid for Cleveland’s less fortunate. At age 96, Fred is still The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland’s most ardent supporter and has watched his legacy grow.

The Ritter Award

Steven W. Jemison The Ramey Award for Distinguished Community Service

Steve’s retirement plan was to enjoy some well-earned “beach time” after a long career heading up Procter & Gamble’s legal affairs in Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa before becoming its Chief Legal Officer and Secretary. But a relaxing residency in Florida doesn’t compare to an active life of dedicated volunteerism. He keeps busy as a prized speaker and mentor for The Ohio State University’s (OSU) National Council of Law meetings and OSU Moritz College of Law’s Alumni Association. Steve was also an active board member for Cincinnati’s Free Store Food Bank, Dress for Success, and the Visiting Nurse Association while fundraising for many OSU scholarships and a fully-endowed law professorship. In 2009, Steve joined the board as treasurer of the Law and Leadership Institute (LLI). In 2014, Steve became the ultimate volunteer for LLI as their full-time CEO and Board President, declining any compensation, eschewing retirement’s proverbial gold watch and relaxation. Steve believes LLI changes lives, and his “LLI retirement” is just one way he can prepare and inspire Ohio’s high school students for post-secondary success.

HONOREES Sarah K. Skow

Statewide Community Service Award for Attorneys 40 & Under

As the daughter of a judge, Sarah understands the bedrock of a democracy is the rule of law. As a lawyer at Spengler Nathanson, she knows to litigate complex business transactions with integrity. And as a volunteer in the Toledo community, she realizes great personal wealth supporting a variety of local organizations through pro bono work for victims of domestic violence; putting up siding for a Habitat for Humanity home or volunteering for Mobile Meals of Toledo. “When I wield a hammer at a Habitat home or staff a table at a fundraising event, I am living Margaret Mead’s words: ‘Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that has.’” As a board member for the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo, The Children’s Theatre Workshop, the Toledo Botanical Gardens Arts and Culture Committee and a Circle 2445 member at the Toledo Museum of Art, Sarah connects with dedicated people in the arts to make a difference in her community. Sarah’s involvement as president of the Toledo Women’s Bar Association and as a member of the Ohio State Bar Association’s Young Lawyer Advisory Board displays a deeply held conviction of living a passionate life in service of others.

The Ohio Innocence Project

Outstanding Program Award

The ideal is that justice should never be delayed. The reality, however, is that people are found guilty of crimes they did not commit. Justice, not delayed, but denied, destroys lives and undermines a fair and impartial judicial system. In 2003, The University of Cincinnati’s College of Law founded the Ohio Innocence Project (OIP) to give Ohio’s prison population access to post-conviction DNA testing and other evidence that can conclusively prove a person’s innocence if wrongfully convicted. Funded through private donations, OIP has as many as 20 law students working full-time during the summer to screen requests and to select approximately six cases for investigation. Students work on the cases part-time during the school year for class credit—providing a free service to clients who are most often poor, forgotten and adrift, having used up all other legal avenues. In 2015, Clarence Elkins was the OIP’s first exoneration after being falsely convicted for a brutal rape and murder of his mother-in-law and the rape of his six-year-old niece. Clarence is the first of 23 individuals who have been exonerated because of the diligent work of the OIP’s caseload—which relies on the idealism, energy and intellect of dedicated students and faculty to ensure that justice is never denied, even if sometimes it is delayed.

FELLOWS FOR THE RECORD... The 2015 Fellows Want to BREAK Records

The Ohio State Bar Foundation (OSBF) 2015 Fellows Class is six months into their commitment and already, they have set the bar high for future Fellows—all for the benefit of law-related initiatives in their communities—and on behalf of the Foundation. With six months remaining until they graduate, this year’s Fellows Class is on track to make this a record-breaking year of service. • Fellows in 4 cities led the effort for the 4th annual Suits for Success clothing drive donating 2,700 items to the Foster Care Alumni of America Ohio Chapter. • In July, the Class spent a day at the University of Toledo Law School partnering with Law and Leadership Institute (LLI) high school students as they prepared for their summer capstone experience—the mock trial competition. After a social lunch with the 28 LLI students, 23 Fellows listened to their arguments and cross-examinations to provide feedback and competition advice. One student expressed in a hand-written note to the Fellows, “You taught me how to speak while being nervous.” • Across the state, the 2015 Fellows volunteered time as judges and coaches for the Ohio Center for Law-Related Education’s We the People and Mock Trial programs. Janet Green Marbley and Catherine Burgett ventured out into local high schools using the Foundation’s Constitution Classroom materials to guide lessons and help teachers promote the statewide celebration of Constitution Day on September 17th. Catherine enjoys the in-school volunteer experience and readily says, “If a teacher asks, I’ll be there.”

Tweetable Velda K. Hofacker

personally donated 250 items to help us exceed last year’s total by 500 items.

– 2015 Fellows Virginia Davidson & Gerald Leeseberg

– 2015 Fellows Class Members

• Kathleen Havener spent time this spring in a classroom sharing the OSBF’s B4USend presentation, teaching students about the laws concerning sexting and cyberbullying. • Current Class Fellow, John Thomas used the OSBF materials from the Clevelandbased advance directive initiative, Light the Way to help promote and educate the public during the Ohio Hospital Association’s Advanced Directives Week.
