Founding Teacher Fellows & RELAY Residents:  18-19 and 17-18 Founding Teacher Fellows attend the same sessions as others who teach the same content.  18-19 and 17-18 RELAY Residents attend the same sessions as others who teach the same content. 7

Additional notes regarding attendance: Kinder teachers

New Kinder teachers who will teach only DI attend ETA Weeks 1 and 2, and the first 2 ½ days of NTI (Goals & Culture). New Kinder teachers who will teach only Eureka attend NTI Weeks 1 and 2 (Goals & Culture, Planning, & Content-Specific). If a new Kinder teacher will teach both DI and Eureka, they should attend:  

ETA Week 1 in June NTI Weeks 1 and 2 (Goals & Culture, Planning, & Content-Specific)

If they teach both, but they can’t attend ETA Week 1 in June, they should attend:  NTI Week 1 (Goals & Culture, and Planning) 

ETA Week 1 Make Up (instead of the NTI Content-Specific sessions)

Austin ONLY: If a new Kinder teacher in Austin will teach both Eureka and Wit & Wisdom, principals should decide whether they will attend Eureka Math or Wit & Wisdom during the Days 3-4 Lesson Planning and the Days 5-7 Content-Specific sessions.

Engineering, Psychology, IB, Computer Science, etc.

Since curricula for engineering, AP Psychology, and IB are campus-based, teachers of these courses will NOT attend the content-specific days of NTI (July 30 – Aug. 1). Instead, campus leaders should ensure these teachers receive an introduction to their curricula, as well as any needed practice in planning and rehearsing course-specific content.

Mid-year hires

Those hired after January 5, 2018 should attend New Teacher Institute.

Returning teachers

Principals may assign teachers to attend 1+ blocks of New Teacher Institute:  July 23 – July 25 (AM): Goals and Management  July 25 (PM) – July 26: Lesson Planning  July 30 – August 1: Content-specific sessions Note: A returning teacher who attends Returning Teacher Institute in June should NOT attend Planning and Content-Specific sessions at NTI, since these sessions will be very similar.

Flex teachers

Regional leads will work with VPs / EDs to assign flex teachers to attend specific grade/content tracks during the sessions on July 30 – August 1.

Founding Teacher Fellows

2017-2018 Founding Teacher Fellows (El Paso & Southern Louisiana) will attend NTI to sharpen their skills as they prepare to launch their own classrooms, and to support newly hired teachers on their teams. 2018-2019 Founding Teacher Fellows (Tarrant County) will attend NTI to prepare for a successful fellowship year at IDEA.

RELAY Residents

2017-2018 RELAY Residents (Year 2 Residents) will attend NTI to revisit key Beginning of Year skills as they prepare to launch their own classrooms. Year 2 RELAY residents will also be excused from attending BOY-focused RELAY trainings as a result of attending IDEA’s own New Teacher Institute. 2018-2019 RELAY Residents (Year 1 Residents) will attend NTI to prepare for a successful residency year at IDEA.

Campus-Led Sessions Classroom procedures and lesson planning expectations often vary from campus to campus. In the past, there was duplication and/or confusion for teachers when procedures and lesson planning expectations were introduced separately at NTI and again during BOY PD. Last year, feedback from leaders on the campus-led sessions was overwhelming positive. On the end of day survey, 99% of leaders indicated that they wanted to include campus-led sessions again at NTI 2018. Leaders also indicated that they wanted to expand the campus-led session to include a campus-led introduction to lesson planning.

Sessions, Intended Impact, and Preparation This year, the national design team will provide materials for the following campus-led sessions: Session

Intended Impact

Preparation

Campus-Led Procedures

Teachers and co-teachers learn and practice procedures at NTI exactly as they will execute them on their campus.

 

  Campus-Led Intro to Lesson Planning

 

Teachers learn campus-specific procedures and expectations for lesson planning / internalization.

  Lesson Rehearsals

Teachers receive feedback on lesson delivery from campus managers.

Add campus-specific details about Culture Camp. Select 2 out of 4 procedures to teach and practice: 1) Homeroom 2) In-class Transitions 3) Passing in Papers 4) Exiting Class Customize materials (if desired) Bring copies for participants Add campus-specific details about lesson plan submission. Ensure handouts contain the lesson plan template(s) and internalization process your new teachers will use – delete other templates that you will not use. Customize materials (if desired) Bring copies for participants

No preparation is required; a protocol and feedback cheat sheet will be provided.

How to Register Current Employees 

All current IDEA employees attending NTI, and any new hires whose Intent to Hire forms were processed before April 23rd, should be registered by May 18th.

Participants who need to be registered directly in Cornerstone by admin assistants include: o Co-teachers promoted to teachers o Mid-year hires (any hired after Jan. 4 must attend) o API’s and PIR’s who are new to managing teachers (and currently work for IDEA) o 2017-18 Founding Teachers Fellows and 2017-18 RELAY Residents o Returning teachers and leaders who are opting in to one or more of the sessions o Any new hires whose Intent to Hire forms were processed before April 23rd

Admin assistants can access a registration training module here: tinyurl.com/SummerPDTraining. The steps for registering current employees for NTI specifically are also summarized below.

3. On the right, select “Create Assignment.”

15

4. Type in a title for the assignment. Include the name your school, and the block of NTI sessions you will register participants for. (The 3 blocks of NTI sessions are Goals & Culture, Lesson Planning, and Content-Specific.) Example: “New Teacher Institute Content-Specific – Carver CP”
