Inn of Court................................................6

From The President by Tom Arceneaux, President, [email protected] THE DOPPLER EFFECT Vrrrrr-RRRRRROOOOm-mmmm. When a vehicle approaches you at a high rate of speed, then passes you, you notice the change in the pitch of the sound. It is higher when it approaches you, then drops after it passes you. That is because the sound waves are closer together as the vehicle approaches you and farther apart when it is moving away from you. It’s called the Doppler Effect. This year, time has had a very pronounced Doppler Effect. The year actually started in December 2019, because this column for January 2020 was due on December 15 (or so), and the January luncheon program does not magically materialize in January. In mid-December 2019, the pitch of the approaching vehicle became higher.

Monroe Inn of Court........................................8

Just as the Association got into some rhythm through February and headed toward what would have been a wonderful Law Week program, COVID-19 struck. The vehicle stayed at a very high pitch as it approached and gained speed. The pitch got higher. Decisions flew at us, and we learned about Zoom.

Who Will Lead the SBA in 2021?..............9

Your Executive Council sprang into virtual action, as did your CLE Committee. We had entered a not so brave new world and had to consider how best to serve you and the community. The result has been a different year, but one of which we still can be proud.

1/27 SBA Membership Luncheon – 12:00 p.m. - Petroleum Club

We managed to have our Law Day Luncheon, albeit late and significantly virtual. We got to have the annual Alston Johnson legislative update live and enjoy fellowship with each other. Our Veterans Affairs Committee adjusted to the challenges of our Veterans Day program and put on a terrific program with Brig. Gen. Cindy Haygood to highlight the great work of the Louisiana National Guard. As the pitch of the sound begins to lower, we can still finish strong this year. We have two important functions this month. First, we can honor our law students and help the Gingerbread House, as well as enjoy friendship and good food while social distancing, at the annual Shreveport Bar Association holiday reception, which Elizabeth and I are privileged to host at our home on December 13. Later that week, please join us for the combined Recent Developments by the Judiciary and CLE by the hour on December 16 and 17. You have three ways to participate – live, live online, and live on demand. This could be the wave of the future. When the nominating committee called me several years ago to ask me to serve as president of your Association this year, I was honored. It has been a privilege to serve with so many great lawyers on the Executive Council and to interact with you on a regular basis. We’ve tried to have as much fellowship as COVID will permit us, and I thank each of you for your encouragement and support. There were some things I would have liked to have started, but the circumstances just didn’t permit it. We are an honorable profession. We stand in the way of tyranny as we protect rights and help citizens resolve their differences peacefully. May we be worthy of that responsibility and vigilant in carrying it out. Old bar presidents don’t fade away, they just become past presidents. I am looking forward to that title as Donna Frazier ably takes the helm for 2021. Please give her the rousing support you’ve given me, and we’ll have a great 2021. Have a happy, safe, and blessed holiday season.
