Questions About Marriage and Singleness October 24/25, 2015 For Starters 1. Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged you or raised questions? 2. What are the different attitudes in culture toward singleness, marriage and sex? Digging In 1. Read 1 Corinthians 7:1-15. How does Paul answer their questions: a. Is it wrong to have sexual relations with a woman? (vv 1-7) b. Is it ok to marry if I’m single or remarry if my spouse has died? (vv 8-11) c. Should we remain in a marriage where our spouse doesn’t follow Christ? (vv 12-16) 2. Look at 1 Peter 3:1-7 to see how godly Christ followers influence their unbelieving husband or wife for Christ. What things are mentioned? 3. In 1 Corinthians 7:17-24, God reminds us that whatever our calling (married, single, free, a slave) and no matter how much you want to change your circumstances, the most important thing to remember is what? Hint: Look at verse 17. 4. Look at 1 Corinthians 7:25-40. a. What is the present situation in Corinth? (v 26) b. What does he say about getting married? (vv 28, 33-34a, 36) c. What does he say about singleness? (vv 32, 34) d. What does he say to widows (by implication widowers)? (vv 39-40) 5. When it comes to sexual purity inside and outside the marriage relationship, there’s a lot of guilt and shame. How does the gospel change that? Look back at 1 Corinthians 6:9-11. Bringing It Home 1. What attitudes is God asking you to change from this week’s teaching? 2. How does this passage help us honor God as singles, couples, divorced or widowed? Share what helps you to honor God in the area of sexual purity whether married or single. 3. How can we encourage singles to see their circumstances as a gift? 4. What did you learn about God from this passage and how can we pray for you this week?
