Worth It: Lesson 6 – Nov 24/25 Group Time Guide: 4-5th Grade

Group Time Guide Supplies Needed: Bike picture, 25 fake 1$ bills, whiteboard, marker, eraser.

1. Getting Started Tell kids to meet someone new, and talk about this: Talk about a time when you needed help from someone else.

2. Discussion Questions • Do you think borrowing money from Bowie will be worth it for Gabby? Why or why not? What do you think she should do? • Have you ever had to ask for something and you had to pay it back? How did that make you feel?

3. Hands-On Option Look Up and Read: Proverbs 13:11. Using someone else’s money is dangerous, it means we are in debt to them, and can feel like being trapped. Say This: Let’s say our group earns five dollars every week. We really want to buy a bike that costs 15 dollars. We could save up for it, which would take three weeks, or we could borrow money from someone, and promise to pay it back. Do This: Pretend one of the kids “loaned” you 10$. Write 10$ on a whiteboard. Agree to pay them two more dollars for every week it takes you to pay them back. Do This: Act out the next few weeks, earning 5$ in ones, and paying it to the person you borrowed from. Be sure to add two dollars to the loan (on the whiteboard) before every week, and subtract the amount you pay. Keep the “paid” money in a pile. Know This: Week 1, we paid 5$. Week 2 you’ll owe 12$, and pay 5. Week 3 you’ll owe 9$, and pay 5. Week 4 you’ll owe 6$, and pay 5. Week 5 you’ll owe 3$, and pay it off! Discuss: How much did I end up paying for the 15$ bike? (23$) Was it worth it? The Point: Using other people’s money will usually cost you more than it’s worth. Sometimes you’ll have to work harder to make up for it, sometimes you may lose a friend if you don’t pay them back. It’s worth it to save up and use your own money.

4. Wrap-Up and Prayer Ask: What was the best part of your week? What was something tough that happened? Do This: Pray with the kids. Pray about things they mentioned if applicable.
