M2.6 Safety of Infusion Therapy in Home Health Care Venue This session relates to the inevitable rise of medical device use in the patient’s Kent home. A good example is the increases in the use of infusion devices assigned to patients after a visit or stay at a hospital. When the patient leaves the hospital and requires an assistive device, eg IV Pump, suction unit, etc, who helps them select the device? What is the role retail pharmacies and home care organizations are playing in the care for the patient using various technologies. Is there a role for Clinical Engineers to participate in this process? The panel will focus on selection and procurement, maintenance and repair, software management, patient safety, and education. Representatives will include Clinical Engineering, an IV systems manufacturer, a pharmacist, an ambulatory care nurse, and a physician.

Time M2.10 Support for Surgical Robotics in Hospitals Venue Wednesday As robotic systems become more common in hospitals, questions arise as to Kent 7:30-8:30 how these systems are supported after purchase and beyond. How involved can clinical engineering become and what are the expectations when working with robotics vendors. Scenarios from full robotic systems to the manipulation of cardiac catheters will be covered along with discussions on existing systems and their current support scenarios. Presenters: 73532: Lise Eamer (Minogue Medical) Who Should Attend: All CMBEC conference delegates 9:00-10:00

M2.11 Health Canada – Medical Device/Software Regulations and Licensing Health Canada has clarified that "Software that is intended or represented for use in the diagnosis or treatment of an abnormal physical state of a patient meets the definition of a medical device under the Food and Drugs Act.." In addition, health Canada has clarified what medical software is regulated as a Class I and Class II medical Device. What is your hospital doing about complying with the new requirement? Do you need to worry about this new requirement? What about home made software? In this session, we will address these concerns and provide more clarifications directly from the source. This is a must session if your hospital uses software in medical devices.

Pairs of speakers will debate opposite sides on a number of controversial topics. They will each have 5 minutes to present their arguments. There will then be an open debate, with audience members invited to challenge the views presented. The presenters will be asked to vigorously defend their views. The moderator will poll the audience before and after each debate to determine whether the presenters' arguments swayed any audience members. There will be a prize for the presentation that sways the most votes.

15:30-17:00 M2.14 Patient Safety: How important is equipment in the overall scheme of things? Is patient safety a Risk Management issue or does Biomedical Engineering/Clinical Engineering continue to have a role to play? It seems that the term Patient Safety has become very important. Clinical Engineering departments used to be recognized as great contributors to patient safety; however, it seems that when people speak about patient safety, they look to the Quality and Risk Management Department. Are we not playing an important role in this front? Do we have the resources (people, time, knowhow, etc) needed to lead, investigate and follow up reported incidents where equipment is suspected to be involved?
