Letter from the Editor

I hope this finds all going well for you and your family. While we are certainly enjoying the spring-time weather here in Texas, it seems that we never really had winter this year. Based on conversations with many of you, it seems that was true for a large part of the country. I suppose that is certainly nothing to complain about. One of the many great things about being involved with Humps N Horns Bull Riding Magazine is the opportunity to go to some of the events and meet you. We really enjoy getting out and seeing some familiar faces that go to a lot of event throughout the year and also seeing some new faces and making new friends. If you make it to one of the events where Humps N Horns has a booth set up, please be sure to stop by and say “Hello!” The next PBR stop that we will be is Little Rock, Arkansas on April 9-10. This issue of HNH is packed with more great articles and photos. Barbara Pinnella has written a terrific article about Ben Jones. It has been fun to watch a little bit of resurgence for Ben Jones. He has been riding really well and has made his way back into the top 20 for the PBR World Standings. We also have a look at the Helldorado Days in Las Vegas. This event began back in 1934 but has a new twist this year by combining the Helldorado Days events, including the PRCA rodeo, and the PBR’s Last Cowboy Standing. This will be an event you don’t want to miss. It’s not too late to make plans to attend May 13-15! We also have an article about a young stock contractor, Tadpole Beck, who has assembled a solid pen of bulls. The Rocking I Rodeo Co. has been making quite a name for themselves in 2016. Andy Gregory has taken some great photos from the 2016 Iron Cowboy which give a small glimpse of the action that took place in Arlington.

This is a great time of the year for bull riding fans. There are so many events, large and small, taking place all over the country. We really encourage you to look in the Where’s the Beef section in the back of each issue to find these events that you can support. You never know when you may be watching a future world champion. Until next time, Terry

Riley’s Roundup

Hello all you bull riding fans, Like to start out by saying how bad I feel for Roy’s owners Julio and Kindra Moreno....I’ve heard people say it’s just a bull that they made a bunch of money off of (that comment caused me to defriend a couple people on Facebook) that is so far from the truth. Roy was part of their family. Again sorry to hear the news!! Also upsetting to hear Mississippi Hippy is retiring, that was Grandpas favorite bull since Smackdown retired. So many bull riders are doing so good: Shane Proctor, Ryan Dirteater, Fabiano Vieira, Stetson Lawrence and how about Ben Jones, the veteran, still got it!!! Rank bulls...too many to list, but how about Air Time....what a beast! I just want you all to know I won’t be at as many PBR events as I usally am. I am playing on a traveling baseball team this year and we are already practicing. Our basketball team came in second place this year. My grandpa will be going to the events and also helping out with the Rider Relief Fund booth at the events. Please stop by and see him.....I’m sorry about not going to so many events but on top of baseball I got a girlfriend and she is a HOTTIE.... Talking of my grandpa every event we/he goes to, some lucky kid gets the Riley Rider Relief Fund Hat. It is fun trying to pick out just that right kid. That’s what the picture this month is....the kid on the left is my cousin Braylon he likes bull riding and baseball too. Well I better get going...homework to do. Please if you get a chance help out a stranger and remember to smile alot. Riley

ability because of thymol, a compound that causes more blood to travel to the area and triggers the muscles to release their tightness.

3. Arnica has anti-inflammatory properties. During a study on treating hand osteoarthritis, it was discovered that using an arnica ointment topically provides the exact same effects as the drug, ibuprofen. Considering the millions of Americans who use NSAIDs to get relief from inflammation and arthritis, this is valuable information as it will allow people to stop masking their pain and start caring for their inflammation, especially since NSAIDs are known to have dangerous side effects. It is also known to reduce the swelling that accompanies broken bones.

10 THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT ARNICA Arnica has been around for centuries, but in recent years, it has developed a steady growth of popularity for its healing properties. It is common to hear that someone has a tube of Arnica Montana just in case they get bumped and bruised, however, the benefits of Arnica do not stop there. Here is a list of 10 benefits that you may not know about Arnica.

4. Arnica stimulates healing. By stimulating the flow of white blood cells to an injured area and producing the ability to cause the body to process congested blood, Arnica is able to help the joints, muscles, and bruised tissue begin to heal.

5. Arnica is handy to have in the medicine drawer. Since it has great anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, Arnica can be applied to acne, insect bites, and chapped lips. It is often distributed to patients who are recovering from surgery. However, it is important to note that arnica should not be used on open wounds or sores.

1. Arnica is derived from a flowering plant. This wild plant produces beautiful, bright yellow flowers that contain the important properties of healing. This flower resembles a sunflower, but it has a yellow disc in the center and is surrounded by long, thin petals. The plant produces flowers from May until August. Once the flower is harvested, it renders volatile essential oils, thymol, helenalin, and flavanone.

2. Arnica relieves aches and pains. Arnica is known to reduce symptoms of Rheumatic pain, as well as muscle aches, cramps and spasms. Many people who experience muscle pain due to strenuous exercise or weightlifting find that Arnica gives them relief. Researchers believe it has this

6. Arnica healing properties are attributed to Thymol. Most of Arnica’s anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties are attributed to its thymol derivatives. Thymol has been found to be effective as a vasodilator of subcutaneous blood capillaries, which means that it helps open up the vessels so that accumulated blood and fluids can be transported from the area of injury.

7. Arnica can be used in a bath. You can add arnica oil to your bath water to heal and promote healthy skin and ease sore muscles. If you have sore feet, it would be beneficial and soothing to soak them in a foot bath with a little bit of arnica oil added to it.

Humps-Horns.com · 8 · April 2016

8. Arnica can be used as a mouthwash. It is also possible to use arnica as a mouthwash for sore gums, or infections inside the mouth or tongue. A few milliliters/teaspoon of arnica oil in a gallon of water can make a perfect mouth wash. Arnica is also prescribed in low doses to chemotherapy patients who develop mouth ulcers, since it is known to help heal the wounds that form along the roof of the mouth and farther in the throat. Research conducted on dental patients showed that Arnica helped control pain and bleeding after treatment.

Whatever Makes Your Feet Hurt...

9. Arnica can prevent bruising. Arnica is known to prevent bruising from tissue trauma. The next time you bump yourself or get hit with something, try applying Arnica, or a product that contains Arnica, as quickly as you can. It has been discovered that Arnica can prevent the capillaries from bleeding, thus preventing the formation of a bruise.

10. Arnica can Relieve Carpal Tunnel Pain. Because of its potent anti-inflammatory properties, Arnica can relieve the pain associated with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). CTS occurs when the very small opening below the base of the wrist develops inflammation. It causes tremendous amounts of pain. Studies have found that people with Carpal Tunnel who apply Arnica find relief from their pain and inflammation, and it has also been found to prevent many from undergoing surgery that is meant to relieve their Carpal Tunnel pain.

From Bull Riders to Ballerinas... and everyone in between

Ty Pozzobon Chasing a Dream by Jill vanEgmond Bull riders don’t let the fear of getting hurt stop them from doing what they love, riding bulls. It’s in their blood. In fact it might be the threat of injury and the adrenaline rush that comes from a successful ride that keeps bull riders coming back for more.

good to me, but I always knew that I was going to be a bull rider. I remember being asked by my teachers in grade school what I was going to be when I grew up and the looks on their faces when I responded with bull rider.”

Getting hurt was the last thing on Canadian born Ty Pozzobon’s mind when he started riding calves at a very young age on the ranch his dad and Nono (Italian for Grandpa) ran in Merrit, British Columbia. Ty grew up seeing old pictures and hearing stories of when his father and uncle rode bulls. He was born to ride.

Two of Ty’s favorite riders as he was growing up were Justin McBride and Chris Shivers. “I can remember getting into my first Built Ford Tough event and seeing Chris Shivers rope hung on the fence. I kind of had to pinch myself. It was a pretty cool feeling to go from watching him ride as I was growing up and studying his videos to riding in the same events as him.”

“I was eight years old when I first started riding steers,” said Ty. “My first practice steer was named Hershey. He was just a dairy steer. The first time I rode him we didn’t have a chute, all we used was a panel and squeezed him up against the fence so he wouldn’t move around too much. “

Ty was the 2010 rookie of the year in Canada and in 2012 won

Ty gives credit to his dad for making him a successful rider. “He always told me growing up that he would back me all the way doing this and he did. I always had a place to practice and bulls to get on. When I was sixteen I started going to Gary Leffew’s ranch and that helped make me the bull rider I am today. When I was eighteen I lived a summer with Tanner Girletz, helped feed bulls for my rent and he took me under his wing, showed me the ropes and got me to my first Canadian Finals. Moving to Odessa, Texas to attend college I didn’t know which way was north or south, Randy Quartieri helped me get settled, became one of my best friends and married me and Jayd. I have met so many good people riding bulls and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.” Growing up his parents gave him the opportunity to play any sport he wanted and bull riding wasn’t the only sport where he excelled. Ty also played hockey and was offered scholarships in both hockey and bull riding. With the support of his parents and family, he chose bull riding and has never looked back. “Having to choose between hockey and bull riding was really a no brainer for me. I loved hockey and it was really

the PBR Canada Finals and was the Season Leader of Pro Rodeo Canada. He holds several rodeo wins under his belt; Cody Stampede, St. Paul Rodeo, Ponoka, Armstrong, Strathmore, Williams Lake and twice was runner up in the Calgary Stampede. Along with these he has been to the PBR World Finals three times and made the short round in finals twice.

I was. Some guys you have to prove yourself to before they will give you respect but Douglas is awesome, you don’t have to prove anything. He’s the same to everyone he meets.” This year Ty is focusing more on the rodeo than PBR. The cowboy he is traveling with is 37 year old Beau Hill, another great bull rider who is the man Ty looks up to most, “He is an awesome dude in the arena and out. I just turned 24 and seeing Beau so successful at 37 makes me think I can make it to 34. When I retire from competition I plan on raising bulls. I have been investing in bulls since my first pro rodeo in 2010 and now have eighty head of animals.”

In 2012 Ty met Jayd, the woman who became his wife on October 11, 2015. Ty walked down the aisle on crutches due to a broken femur. Jayd’s father was a stock contractor so she grew up around the sport and knew the dangers of being a bull rider. Ty said, “I have had some bad luck in my career when it comes to injuries, but she supports me through the tough times and the good times.” Injuries play a significant part in the sport of bull riding and Canadian born Ty Pozzobon has definitely seen his share. On November 14, 2014 during the first round of the PBR Canada Finals, Ty Pozzobon had a wreck that not only could have ended his career as a professional bull rider, but could have ended his life. Ty suffered a serious brain injury during his dismount when Boot Strap Bill, the bull he had ridden giving him 86 points in the round, stepped on his head breaking his helmet, leaving him unconscious for nearly 20 minutes and waking up as he was being transported to the hospital. “I have family and friends that still refuse to watch the wreck, it’s a blessing that I’m alive and well today.”

When asked if he would encourage people to support the Rider Relief Fund he responded, “Anyone who loves the sport should support the Rider Relief Fund. They make it possible for cowboys like me to keep going after a bad accident. They really live up to the name Rider Relief because as I was sitting at home with no income, I realized how much is spent on everyday needs. They helped me through those times and made it possible for me to get back on my feet and go back to chasing my dream.” “I will definitely get more involved with Rider Relief Fund and other bull riders and bullfighters should too, because in our sport we don’t know what the next ride is going to bring and anything can happen.”

“The first 2 weeks afterward were a complete blur, I slept the days away. I was supposed to return to the Built Ford Tough Series in January, but with the state I was in there was no way I could do so. February came quickly and I still had not returned to bull riding. My income stopped in November and I was quickly beginning to worry about finances.” “I had heard multiple moving stories from people being helped by the Rider Relief Fund in the past and figured I would reach out to them. I had always heard how great the organization was, but I was about to find out first hand. The awesome staff responded to me immediately, helped me through the process and provided help with my finances. Everything piled up doctor bills, mortgage and everyday life expenses. I can’t express my appreciation for their help when I was in a time of need.” “I love bull riding and everything that comes with it; the traveling, the lifestyle and all of the great friends I have made. It’s cool to be surrounded by such great friends that are the greatest bull riders in the world like Tanner Byrne and Douglas Duncan. Tanner and I grew up seeing each other ride in the amateurs and now we’re best friends. Douglas was someone I always looked up to and he’s been the exact same way to me from the start when he didn’t know who

“The Rider Relief Fund made it so I could rest comfortably at home while I was healing and return to the sport of bull riding with a clear mind and less worries. It’s a true relief knowing that professional cowboys like me have such a great organization to turn to in times of need like mine.” Unless otherwise noted, photos provided courtesy of Ty Pozzobon.

him. He was accused of breaking body parts from the statue of the god Hermes. He was commanded to return home and another general was sent in his place. The other general was incompetent causing Athens to lose the war. This wasn’t the first or last battle lost due to busybodies.

Inspiration Point by Keno Shrum Busybodies or Busy Bodies Still attached to an upper story of a house on Elfreths’ Alley in Philadelphia is a busybody. That’s right a mechanical busybody made by Benjamin Franklin. Mirrors make up this busybody which reflect to the real busybody what is happening in the alley without them having to put their head out of the window. Isn’t it sad that every society has had busybodies? God has always urged busybodies to become busy bodies. Leviticus 19:16-18 instructs Israel not to be a talebearer, hater of brethren, vengeful, or bear grudges. These thoughts are concluded with the words, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.” Busybodies need to become busy bodies of love. Whether it is a friend, stranger or enemy, why would a Christian hurt them with sinful busybody ways? We ought to be busy bodies serving them through love.

Spiritual battles are always lost by busybodies. When God lists seven things He hates in Proverbs 6, several of them describe busybodies: Pride, lying, wicked hearts with wicked plans, feet that are swift to do wrong, and one who sows discord among brethren. On the other hand, when God gives the great commission to spread the Gospel to the whole world, the second greatest commandment to love your neighbor, the commands to take care of orphans, widows, the poor, visit the sick and those in jail, study, pray, meditate, instruct our children, work, pay taxes, give, worship, and on and on are commands that require our time every day! If we are busy serving our Lord, we simply won’t make the time to be busybodies. Lay down the phone, stop the e-mails, get out of the coffee houses, narrow down the hobbies and do more kingdom work! If you are interested in finding out more about how you can become a busy body for the Lord rather than a busybody, then “‘Come and let us reason together...’ the ways of the Lord.” (Isaiah 1:18) In HIS Love, Keno

How does one become a busybody? Perhaps there are several ways. A few things associated with busybodies are mentioned in 1 Timothy 5:3-15. Those who live in sensual pleasure (vs. 11). Those who do not keep the vows they make (vs. 12). They learn to be idle. They wander about from house to house. They gossip and are busybodies (vs. 13). Once someone has started the habitual life of being a busybody, is there any hope for them? 2Thessalonians 3:6-15 instructs the church to take action by marking the disorderly busybody. It isn’t right to not work, beg from others for daily provision, and use idle moments to talk. The church must stand against this. The church must command them to work, be quiet and provide their own bread. To reinforce this teaching he adds not to grow weary in doing good. In other words, God wants us to be busy bodies working to provide, not busybodies wandering about, gossiping, and begging! C.S. Lewis wrote about busybodies who constantly picked at others to live a moral life, “Those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.” Do you love juicy gossip? If a couple were experiencing a divorce because of fornication, would you regret that you hadn’t heard which one was unfaithful and with whom? Would you ask others and seek details? Why? Would you go to them, pray with them, and encourage them to work through it? Why do you want to know? Either to be a busybody or a busy body. Those who want to know, do so they can gossip and use the information as a weapon of knowledge and torment people instead of love them. One of the greatest Athenian generals was Alcibiade. He set sail to war against the city of Syracuse. A busybody made false accusations against

TALES FROM THE BUCKING CHUTE Original Works of Fiction by M. Albert Morningstar

Murder at the PBR Part 24 Which was one reason why I called her early the next morning and pressed her to join me for breakfast. I picked the least popular restaurant the casino had to offer. Arriving first, I scrounged a far corner booth and ordered coffee. Sure enough, LeAnn ambled in a few minutes later and slid onto the seat across from me. She was wearing red jeans and a black top. “Sorry to wake you up so early,” I said as the waitress sidled over carrying a coffee pot. “I was awake,” she claimed wearily. “Just lying there. Haven’t gotten ten minutes sleep either of the last two nights.” LeAnn was going to settle for the coffee, black at that, but I insisted she eat something. Reluctantly, she let me order waffles and ham for her, same as I’d ordered for myself. “Elissa talking to you yet?” I wagged my head. Bitterly, she said, “After all, aren’t you the savior of the PBR?” That won’t garner me a single point for my next ride if I don’t stay on for eight full seconds. I sighed. “She’ll come around.” I was doubtful. It was my opinion she’d already moved on. “So have you made a decision about what you’re going to do?” LeAnn asked. “Last night I watched the guys congratulating Cody for winning the Finals, Justin the night before for winning the World Championship. I found myself longing to be a part of it. That tipped the scales. I’m telling Daryl I’ll be riding come first of the year. Despite what John Henry did to me Saturday night, my shoulder is getting better.” “You’re not going to press charges against Royce for that, are you, Chance?” Her eyes were employing. “It was like a reflex action. He didn’t know you were going to go to the arena that night. And you know Royce has always liked you.” Royce had dropped by the Thomas and Mack to check on his bulls. He’d heard me calling Craig’s name and decided to sic John Henry on me. While he’d recognized the threat my inquiries represented, his act was more spontaneous than premeditated. He’d said it shortly before the police took him off to jail and I believed him. “No, I’m not pressing any charges,” I assured her. “He’s

in enough trouble as it is. Besides, I never thought John Henry would actually kill me. He just wanted to rough me up a bit.” For some weird reason, right then, I actually believed that, too. LeAnn smiled her thanks. The waitress brought our orders and set them before us. As we nibbled on our ham and buttered our waffles, I said, “When is Royce being returned to Atlantic City?” “Probably tomorrow,” LeAnn said. “He’s waving extradition.” “That’s probably smart.” “So what’s the reason for dragging me out of bed at the crack of dawn?” “Just nosiness, I guess,” I said, and then took my first taste of waffle. It was heavenly. “You’re wondering what’s going to happen to me?” I was in too big of a hurry to fork more of my delicious waffle into my greedy mouth to offer more than a silent nod. “I’m going to stand by Royce, of course. I’ve already quit my job. We’re still getting married. Maybe as early as Wednesday. In Atlantic City. The lawyer thinks he has a good chance of plea bargaining manslaughter. Ten year sentence, out in five, maybe less. Sounded to me like manslaughter was what it was anyhow.” I swallowed the mouthful of food before saying, “From what he said, yes. Manslaughter sounds plausible.” “What do you mean from ‘What he said?’” She was eyeing me warily. “Come on, LeAnn,” I said. “You don’t want to go there.” She set her fork on her plate and sat back in her seat. “I think I do. Don’t you believe Royce?” “Let’s just say I know you believe him. Let’s let it go at that.” “No, I won’t let it go.” She was getting quite indignant now. “Explain yourself, Chance Boettecher.” I gobbled another mouthful of my breakfast and then stared at my ex as if hypnotized. Up until then, I had been ambivalent about how far I wanted to take it with her. I think, though, deep down, this is exactly where I had hoped she would push it. I set my fork down, too, and then leaned forward. “You know how on television,” I began, “at the climax of a mystery whenever the murderer is confronted by the detective, the detective throws out a few pieces of evidence and the murderer suddenly confesses?” LeAnn nodded dubiously. “Well, I always thought that phony. Unrealistic. Of course, I know that on television they have to get the show over within the allotted time, so the confession is a device to bring about a timely conclusion. And I accept it for television. But in real life, I always doubted that it worked that way. From the newspaper accounts of all the murders I’ve ever read about, the murderer stonewalls it. Criminals know their right to remain silent.” “Where are you going with this, Chance?” “Didn’t it strike you as odd how fast Royce confessed?” “Odd?”

Humps-Horns.com · 16 · April 2016

“Yes. At first, he seemed about to stonewall it, just like I thought he would. But after you asked me why I thought Royce killed Wanda, he suddenly blurts out that he killed her and told us it was because she was hounding him for money and humiliating him to the point where he couldn’t take it anymore.” She wiggled in her seat, smiled smugly. “That’s where the lawyer thinks he can get the DA to go along with manslaughter.” “Right. I figured Royce thought that, too. Which is why he didn’t want me to answer your question.” “Huh?” “I was arrested for burglary.” “So?” “They caught me red-handed holding a file, a medical file.” “Whose file?” she queried, tilting her head in a way that said she’d already guessed whose it was. “Have you wondered why Royce fainted when he did?” “It was Royce’s file?” I confirmed it was. “Royce spotted Elissa with me on Monday. The sudden anxiety of wondering what she might tell the PBR’s handpicked police liaison was too much for him and he collapsed. But Elissa hadn’t told me anything, though she’d made the mistake of dropping a couple of hints. I had to commit burglary to find out what I needed to know. And yes, I’d already gleaned something important from that file by the time the security guard walked in on me.” “Which was?” “Remember how Wanda, after the death of her little girl, used to say motherhood was not for her and how she’d had the appropriate tubes attended to?” LeAnn nodded. “We all thought she’d had her own tubes tied. Turned out that wasn’t the case at all. Guess she didn’t want anyone messing with her equipment. Well, it turned out that instead of her tubes having been attended to, it was Royce’s equipment that got tied or snipped or whatever. Royce had a vasectomy some time back.” “Vasectomies can be reversed.” “I doubt if you’re going to make that fly in this case,” I said. “When I put two and two together, I came up with Royce is not the father of your child. And he knows it.” While her look said Of course, he knows it, her mouth said, “Then if not Royce, who could possible be the father?” Pouring my gaze directly into LeAnn’s challenge-filled eyes, I said, “My guess is Lane Lowick is the father.” As if slapped in the face, she looked away. Quickly recovering, she returned her stare to me. She made as if to laugh, as if trying to foster an image that the idea couldn’t be anything but preposterous. “And where did you come up with that wild idea?” “It all fits.” “Fits?” “Yes. Saturday afternoon, after returning from my little visit with your sister…” “Did you really think I didn’t know about that?” “Royce’s little ploy with John Henry Saturday night told me you did. My guess is Leona called you after I left.” “You think? My ex shows up on her front porch, she’s not going to let me know? She’s my sister.” “Anyway, I didn’t return directly here. Instead, I slipped

down to Laughlin where I carried a PBR World Finals program to a certain man. I had him look through it, asking him to point out the pictures of a man and a woman who were dining together in a restaurant the night before Lane was killed. That man was having dinner with Cauy Hall in the same restaurant at the same time. Cauy recognized the two people and pointed them out to him.” “And…?” “He looked at the pictures in the program, turned the pages slowly. He looked carefully at every picture in there. Finally, he pointed to two people. They were on different pages. Then he said, ‘I’m not completely sure, but I think these are the two.’” LeAnn regarded me with curious eyes. I could see she was more than a little anxious to hear the names of the people the man had targeted. She was biting her tongue as if to keep from screaming at me to get on with it. “I also showed him two pictures I always carry in my wallet. This time, he confirmed them definitely as pictures of the two people Cauy had pointed out to him in that restaurant. They were pictures of the same two people he’d pointed out from the program but wasn’t sure of. The pictures were of Lane and you.” “If I had been in a restaurant with Cauy Hall, don’t you think I would have recognized him?” I shook my head. “Not this time. He sat several tables over from you. Had a direct view of both you and Lane. You had the same clear view of him as well. But despite that, you didn’t recognize him.” “And why didn’t I?” “Because he was dressed up as a woman.” “A woman?” “Yes. Cauy was both gay and a cross-dresser. And that night, he was on a date with a man who had no connection with the PBR. He pointed both you and Lane out to his date. Got a big kick out of watching the two of you together without either of you recognizing him. He told the man someone was going to be surprised to learn his wife was out with his best friend. It was the words “his wife” that threw me off for the longest time. Had me suspecting other happily married bull riders and their wives who weren’t the least bit involved. What Cauy actually meant was ‘his ex-wife.’ Cauy was buried in a Catholic cemetery. He and Jodi must have been raised Catholic. Catholics do not believe in divorce. At least in theory. So I guess he saw you and me as still married. Anyway, because of his sexual preference and his penchant for dressing up like a woman, he could tell only one other person what he saw.” “Who was that?” “His sister.” “Jodi? Wait a minute.” Her eyes grew wide. “You’re not going to try to pin Jodi’s murder on Royce, too, are you? He never went to Twin Falls that weekend. We were together the whole time. I can vouch for that.” “I’m sure you can. No, I’m not trying to pin Jodi’s murder on Royce.” “Who killed Jodi, then? Some rapist as the police think?” “I don’t think so but I can only guess.” “So, what’s your guess?” “I think Wanda killed her.” “Wanda?” I nodded. “She was certainly strong enough. Jodi being

the petite thing she was. As I see it, Cauy told Jodi he saw you and Lane having dinner together. Jodi probably made nothing of it at the time. Then Cauy was killed by John Henry on the same day you announced your pregnancy. Jodi remembered what Cauy told her several weeks before. If Cauy were alive, she couldn’t do anything. To do so would push Cauy out of the closet and Jodi wouldn’t do anything to hurt Cauy. He was her brother, after all, but he was also her bread and butter. He took care of her. And under normal circumstances she wouldn’t hurt a soul. But Cauy was dead. She’d lost her source of income. So she felt free to act. Needing money, she…now here I’m really guessing…went to Wanda to get her to blackmail Royce.” “Why Wanda?” “Because, despite needing money, Jodi really was a sweet kid who wouldn’t hurt a fly. At least directly. But she knew Wanda was just ruthless enough to go after Royce for everything she could get. Her idea was to split whatever Wanda got out of Royce. Jodi probably thought she and Wanda could milk that cow for years.” “But why did Wanda kill her?” “Because Jodi was right about one thing—Wanda was ruthless. Worse, Wanda, heavily in debt, was growing desperate. Once she learned what Jodi told her, she didn’t need her anymore. Without Jodi, she could keep everything she could milk out of Royce for herself.” “But what did Jodi have to blackmail Royce with?” I paused, sat up straight in my seat. “Well, there are two potential theories on that.” “There are?” She was all ears, green eyes sparkling. “There are two reasons Jodi couldn’t move on her blackmail scheme while Cauy was alive. The first, I’ve told you. She couldn’t push Cauy out of the closet. But the second reason was because, until the night Cauy was killed, she never suspected who killed Lane by running over him with a motor vehicle.” “What gave her ideas?” “Your announcement that you were pregnant.” LeAnn was about to say something but I cut her off. “And not just pregnant, but six weeks pregnant. Six weeks would take it back to your dinner date with Lane. And she put two and two together.” “So why did she want to blackmail Royce?” “Because he had money and she believed he was the one who ran Lane down.” “Why did she believe Royce capable of such a thing?” “Because, like everyone else, she knew you and Royce had been dating for some time. Then you’re out on a dinner date with Lane Lowick. Six weeks thereafter, you and Royce are announcing that you’re pregnant and Royce is the father. In putting two and two together later, she must have thought Royce ran Lane down because he’d learned of your date and was jealous. Makes sense to me.” “Yes. But, of course, Royce is not the type. He wouldn’t have killed Lane.” “Well, he killed Wanda, don’t forget.” “He explained that. It was manslaughter.” “And, of course, the fact that Royce couldn’t commit premeditated murder shoots Jodi’s theory all to hell.” “Exactly.” “So we have to conclude Royce did not kill Lane.”

“Right.” “Otherwise, he never would have confessed to Wanda’s murder. He would have stonewalled it.” “So if Royce didn’t kill Lane, who did?” “Well, that brings us to the second theory of the matter.” END PART 24 Parts 1-23 in preceding issues of HNH

Situated halfway between Austin and Houston is the small Texas town of Fayetteville, population 254. It lies about twelve miles east of La Grange and twelve miles north of Borden and Interstate 10. Not too far down the road you’ll find a busy 60-acre ranch that is the home of a genuine cowboy who goes by the handle of Tadpole Beck. He and his wife, Jesi, are the owners of the Rockin I Rodeo Company, which has been opening some eyes and making a name for itself in the PBR Built Ford Tough Series the past two seasons. “Jesi and I started Rockin I Rodeo in 2013,” Tadpole shared. “My dad, Saxon Beck Sr., owns IROC Rodeo Company, which stands for ‘In Remembrance of Crabtree’. Greg Crabtree was a well known bull fighter and he was killed in a bulldozer accident. A few years back dad bought Lancaster Rodeo. I took that second CPRA card and

changed the name to Rockin I. We already had some decent bulls, and I purchased five more bulls which became our foundation. They were 954 Machinery Auctioneer’s Lil Joe, 101 Slinger Jr, 126 Cowtown Rock, 976 Slick Rick and L12 The Colonel.” “We started hauling our bulls to PBR Touring Pro events,” Tad continued, “where they did really well. Our bulls just kept getting better and better, so I started calling Cody Lambert (PBR Director of Livestock). We made our BFTS debut with those five bulls in St. Louis last year.” “I’ve been around bulls my whole life,” Tad revealed. “I rode bulls until I was 21, but injuries cut it short for me. I rode bulls good, but not great. I’m not just an old bull rider who decided to become a stock contractor. I’m a working cowboy with a day job. I have a trucking company and I buy and haul cattle. I own 150 head of commercial cows and 45 bucking bulls right now. Hauling bucking bulls gives me an opportunity to aim for that gold buckle at the top.” “Our deal is a family deal,” Tad explained. “My dad and I help each other all the time. He’s got the horses and I’ve got the bulls. He’s been in the cattle business his whole life and owns his own trucking company, as well as IROC Rodeo Company. My dad helps me with my trucking company and takes care of my cows when I’m hauling on the road. I have two boys. Jaxon is five years old and Paycen is two years old. Jesi and the boys travel with me much of the time. When we go to rodeos, we all go. We love to rodeo and we do it together. We’re all just cowboys at heart.” Jesi’s grandparents are the legendary Jerald and Joan Smith, owners of Wing Rodeo Company. They are two people who are truly beloved in the rodeo industry, and they have greatly impacted a bunch of folks down through the years. Jerald was inducted into the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2010. “We’re all working people, full speed every day,” Tad said. “I’m really proud of that. We’re not spoiled rich kids living off of someone else’s money. We work hard and this is our dream. We’ve taken a little of nothing and made something out of it. The last couple of years we’ve had the money to do something special and it’s really working out.”

Rockin I Rodeo doesn’t have enough land to support a breeding program. But Jesi loves horses and they have a couple of mares and are raising a few colts as well.

“Right now we’ve got 25-28 bulls that are at the BFTS level,” Tad shared. “I’ve been able to develop a confidence in our bulls, and I’m comfortable knowing I can haul them and they will all do their job and do it well. Cody Lambert has begun to trust me and my knowledge of my own bulls. I call him a lot, because I want my bulls to be able to buck. He let me haul 20 bulls to Chicago and New York this year, and I just hauled 14 bulls to Phoenix last week. I don’t mean to brag, but I really study bucking bulls and I have a knack for picking out good ones. Our bulls are making a living for us right now.” “Slinger,Jr., and Machinery Auctioneer’s Lil Joe have been our backbone,” Tad added. “These two bulls are short round and 15/15 Bucking Battle bulls, and both went to the BFTS World Finals in Las Vegas last year. Ricky Carpenter and his family are my partners for Slinger, Jr., and Terry Dickerson at Machinery Auctioneers in San Antonio is my partner for Machinery Auctioneer’s Lil Joe. I’m really grateful to all the folks who have helped us get to where we are today.”

Some of the other Rockin I bulls are: 138 Cracker Jack, 214 Jailbreaker, 1440 Loose Change, 0114 Tahonta’s Magic, 073 Lieutenant Dan, 017 Crazy Horse, 09 Legal Tender, 55 Throwin Salt and 029 Two Chains. “We feed our bulls ProBull Max,” Tad said. “And they get plenty of exercise. They have to go uphill every day to eat. Sometimes that means slogging through east Texas black mud when it rains. I’ve bought about 85% of my bulls from Jerald and Joan’s bull sales in Fort Worth and Texarkana. My bulls are like my kids. If something is wrong with them, I know about it right away. I learn something new about bucking bulls every day.” “How did you get the name Tadpole?” I asked as our interview was coming to an end. “Well my dad is Saxon Beck Sr. and I am Saxon Beck Jr.,” Tad answered. “My dad used to ride bulls. When he did, it seemed his knees were always up around his ears, so they started calling him Bullfrog. When I was born, I just naturally became Tadpole.”

The Dancing Australian orite v a F Fan

by Barbara Pinnella

One of the PBR bull riders that fans ask about the most is Australian Ben Jones. He is a favorite for a couple of reasons, his wild dance being one of them. Followers of Jones get almost as excited as he does as he gyrates and pumps his arms when he is up on the shark cage after a ride. But the thing we hear about the most is the passion he shows in his try and determination, and he is known to be one of the most emotional riders on the tour. When Ben rides and gets to do his dance there is not a happier man around, and when he bucks off, nobody is more upset with himself than Jones. When you speak with him however, he is soft-spoken and humble, and exhibits an almost shy quality when answering questions. But

he is fully aware that the emotions he displays at a bull riding event are a hindrance to him rather than a help. “Oh yeah, it gets in my way big time,” he told us. “I end up trying too hard and trying to make it happen instead of just letting it happen. But when things can’t get any worse it’s time to forget about it and start all over again. It can go from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows real quick for me.” When asked if he was like that in his everyday life, he laughed and said, “That’s what me wife tells me!” It is hard for Ben to get himself out of a funk. He gets down on himself for doing something wrong to cause a buck off. He told us you have to know when you do it wrong, but he knows he can obsess over that, which can create his downward spiral. And like most competitive people, it is often hard to shake that off. Jones, who turned 37 this past month, has been riding bulls for a long time now, both here and in his native Australia. He has seen many changes take place. The main one is the increase in prize money that the PBR makes available for the bull riders. “From a bull riders’ point of view I have to thank the PBR. At one time when I won a bull riding I got $324. So the opportunity to win so much money, I can’t thank the PBR enough.” Ben lives in Texas, and the last time he went back to Australia was three years ago. His wife Christie goes back and forth much more often. But when Jones’ bull riding career is finally finished – which his many followers hope is a long way off – all that will change. “Me and my wife, we made a deal years ago. She competed in rodeos, and she stopped rodeoing to help me live this dream. So when I’m finished we’re gonna go back home and live her dream. We might end up back here one day, but Christy wants to rodeo in Australia.” That will be quite a change for Ben. When the time comes, he will be on the sidelines cheering, rather than the other way around as it is now. And Christie is always cheering him on, because she is always at his side.

“Every weekend she’s there with me,” he said. “She’s me best friend, she’s me wife, and I couldn’t ask for a better friend. We have been married four years and been together 11.”

As I was standing there talking with Ben, I was looking at his great smile. As most bull riding followers and Ben admirers know, Jones had been recognized in part for his missing teeth. That didn’t stop him from smiling when he made a ride; in fact, it was part of what made Ben, Ben.

Last year, when he suddenly grinned and showed off those pearly whites, it was quite a surprise. I just had to ask about his transformation. I had asked him in the past if he ever wanted to change his smile, and he told me no. Still, after the fact, I must admit I was surprised with his answer. “I wish I hadn’t done it. I don’t like it; I don’t like the feeling of it. But I had no choice. There was too much infection and they had to pull them.” In conclusion, Ben had just a couple more things to say. “The passion is there more than ever. When I go to bed it’s the last thing I think about, and the first thing when I wake up, so the love is definitely still there. “But I think everybody knows all about me by now,” he laughed. “I just can’t thank the people enough who are behind me, and people like you who want to talk to me.” Ben made a huge jump in the world standings, going from a strong possibility of being cut from the BFTS tour a few short weeks ago to moving up to the 19th spot. At the Phoenix Invitational the first weekend of March, Jones won the Championship Round with the

highest-marked ride of the event – a 90.75 score on Cowboy’s Dance Hall’s Panda Trax, from J.D. Nix Rodeo Company. He finished third overall, picking up 335 points in the BFTS world standings. The following weekend at the Duluth Invitational, Jones had another strong showing, tying for first in Round 1, coming in third in the second round, and finishing up third in the event standings. He moved up even higher, now sitting in the 13th spot in the BFTS standings. We at Humps N Horns want to wish him continued success the rest of the season. We are looking for many more dances to come!

HELD IN CONJUNCTION WITH

RUMBLE IN THE RUBIES

by Barbara Pinnella Helldorado Days is best known today as a Western and rodeo event, but that was not the only intent back in its inception. Yes, it does go back to the Wild West, but to really understand the growth and popularity, a little bit of history is necessary.

This year, however, things will be a little different. There will still be a three-day PRCA rodeo to be held May 13-15, but rather than being held downtown, the event will take place within the Las Vegas Village on the Las Vegas Strip.

In 1934, when Hoover Dam (previously Boulder Dam) was being built, Clyde Zerby decided that Helldorado Days would be a way for the Dam workers, as well as visitors who came to watch the construction of the Dam, to relax and party. It would also bring in money from those who chose to attend, and it was a bit of a rowdy affair.

As has always been the case, there will be many other activities for families to both participate and enjoy. People will get to see Mutton Bustin’ to be held before each PRCA performance and a carnival. The Helldorado Days Parade will commence in Downtown Las Vegas at 10:00 Saturday morning.

The following year, with the continuing construction of the Dam and with gambling legal in Nevada, Las Vegas was thriving. But fearing that Las Vegas would become a ghost town once the building of the dam was completed, the local Elks Lodge decided to make Helldorado Days an annual event.

And don’t forget the always popular Whiskerino Contest, which will also be held Downtown, at the El Cortez Casino on Main Street. This Whiskerino Contest has been included in Helldorado Days from the very beginning, and has five categories to either enter, or just participate as a spectator. It is a great cause too, since this contest raises funds to benefit local children’s organizations.

By doing so it was hoped that dam workers and their families would stay in the Las Vegas area. They also wanted to entice visitors to return to experience the Old West. The idea was a success, and Helldorado Days continued to grow.

While the same Elks Lodge is once again involved, the biggest change for this year is the fact that Helldorado Days will be teaming up with the PBR for Last Cowboy Standing, the last BFTS event before spring break.

With that growth, the more scandalous goings-on that had been presented in 1934 were eliminated. In their place were familyfriendly activities such as a rodeo, a parade, and different contests.

This did not happen overnight and CEO of the PBR, Sean Gleason, explained some things to us. First, he spoke about the significance of Helldorado Days for the city of Las Vegas.

Unfortunately, in the late 1990s as sponsorships declined, the cost of putting on this production increased to the point that the event could no longer exist. Helldorado Days had fallen victim to the outlandish resorts of the time. It was believed that nobody was interested in the Western roots of the city.

“I think it is extremely important. It has a tradition dating back to 1934, and is essentially Las Vegas’ Birthday celebration. There is a rich heritage, and it’s synonymous with the Western Lifestyle celebration for the city of Las Vegas.”

In celebration of the 100th birthday of Las Vegas in 2005, and with help from the Las Vegas Centennial Commission, the Las Vegas Elks Lodge #1468 would revive Helldorado Days. The event was born again and has continued ever since.

While the excitement of these two events being mingled together is growing very quickly, Gleason was quick to point out that this arrangement did not happen overnight. “I reached out to them approximately five years ago to see if there

Humps-Horns.com · 28 · April 2016

was any possibility of aligning PBR’s Springtime Las Vegas event with the Helldorado Days activity,” Sean told us. “For one reason or another it just didn’t progress. “In 2015, just prior to the Last Cowboy Standing event, I reached out again through city contacts and started discussions with the Elks and the City of Las Vegas to find out if there was an opportunity. I knew that Helldorado was going through some changes, in terms of the rodeo management and other things.” Gleason said that while combining the two had been an interest for a long time – those five years that he mentioned – things really heated up in the last 12 to 18 months. But the evolution did not come without work. “It has been a very significant undertaking to get the alignment of all the various groups that are involved in the city of Las Vegas, the Centennial Committee and the local Elks Lodge. There were a lot of moving parts that we had to work through in order to get everybody aligned with the singular strategy that we have now. “But I am absolutely happy with the way things have progressed. We are enjoying some great partnerships with the Elks as well as the City, and we are looking forward to year one of Helldorado Days under PBR’s guidance and direction. “There’s a rich history, obviously, around events like Helldorado Days, Cheyenne Frontier Days, and the Calgary Stampede,” Sean continued. “Helldorado Days is a very family-oriented event, and it’s a celebration of not just rodeo and bull riding and the western lifestyle, but it’s a very American tradition. So we are excited to dust it off and bring it back with a new spin.”

This is a big step for the PBR, but one that looks to be in everyone’s best interest. “The PBR is making a significant investment in this format. We hope this is the first of many in which we can bring a broader western lifestyle experience to new fans, as well as hard-core bull riding and rodeo fans.” The PBR’s Last Cowboy Standing will join this big weekend for the first two days of Helldorado Days, May 13 and 14, and will also be held at the previously mentioned Las Vegas Village. For those of you are not acquainted with this unique format, Last Cowboy Standing will feature the top riders of the PBR competing in this single elimination event. To make it into the next round, the riders must make the eight-second whistle. The men will ride in round after round until there is only one rider remaining. Try to make it out to celebrate the 111th Birthday of the city of Las Vegas. Come watch three days of Western lifestyle fun, witness some great rodeo and bull riding competition, and see who will be the Last Cowboy Standing.

New Silver Select Payout for Futurity Events The United Bucking Bulls, Inc has always been on the cutting edge of new ideas to enhance the bucking bull industry! The Gold Standard Futurity & Black Gold Derby were the first events to offer ownership in positions to compete for bigger purses! The Wayne Hodges 4 Star Trailers Futurity Super Series offers additional bonus money and the use of a new aluminum trailer! In keeping with those cutting edge ideas, the UBBI has announced it’s new Silver Select Futurity payout. “We’re excited about this new Silver Select payout,” stated Randy Schmutz, the general manager of the UBBI. “It adds to the number of paid positions at every UBBI Futurity event (except the Gold Standard & UFL futurities) and gives a larger number of participants a chance to win money!” Entry fees at regular season UBBI futurity events will increase from $450 to $500 for the remainder of the 2016 season. The $50 will create the Silver Select payout and be paid back 100%!

For example, at a futurity with 60 bulls entered, we will continue to pay 1 place for every 5 bulls entered, thus the top 12 placing bulls would earn a check toward qualifying for the UBBI National Finals. The forty-eight remaining bulls would be eligible for the Silver Select payout (60 bulls x $50 = $3,000 paid 100%). Dividing those 48 bulls, 1 place for every 5 bulls, the Silver Select would then pay the next 9 bulls. Silver Select winnings will NOT count as qualifier dollars toward UBBI National Finals or UBBI Futurity World Title. “This is another way for members to enter and win with bulls that are just out of those regular paid positions,” explained Schmutz. “I’m confident this adds value to our futurity system and keeps it simple for everyone to understand and also provides a return to more of our members!” The Silver Select payout began at the Boston Porter Memorial Bull Riding UBBI event in Palestine, Texas on March 18-19.

The 2016 schedule is looking great with several new events added. Now would be a great time to renew your 2016 membership. This is the last newsletter mailed until a 2016 membership is renewed. Any money won be lost if your membership is not renewed by March 31, 2016. Those listed in RED in the standings need to be renewed. Applications are available in this newsletter or online at www.bull-of-am.com under the forms tab. Contractor and producers, please get your events sent in, so they can be added to the 2016 schedule and forwarded to the Humps N Horns magazine. I have 2 leather coats from the 2015 Finals for sale. Both are size Medium. If interested, contact the secretary at 712.261-0241.
