Camp RIO 4th Grade Curriculum Description General activity descriptions Canoeing: Student will develop an understanding of masterful paddling techniques. They will navigate the natural oxbow lake on our property while on long canoe boats. The curriculum will feature topics of safety, technique, communication and problemsolving. Lessons will also include elements of physics and natural history. Archery: Student will acquire skills in dexterity and aim with bows and arrows on a live archery range. The curriculum will focus on safety, technique and the required attitude traits of excellent marksmen. Lessons may also include elements of physics and history. Nature Photography: Students will capture moments of their adventurous experience through our trail systems. The curriculum will highlight the use of technology in nature, the importance of images for science and conservation, as well as the science of photography. Lessons will send students on scavenger hunts for various morphological traits and students will investigate the value in their captured images. Survival Craft (Whittling & Primitive Fire-Starting): Equipped with basic tools, students will learn and practice essential skills for survival in primitive outdoor, scenarios. Curriculum will focus on natural resources, safety and attention to detail. Lessons will include discussions of biology, chemistry and history. 4th-grade-specific activity descriptions

➢ Instruction for Canoeing and Archery will both include discussion of physical phenomena founded on the following concepts and guiding questions as they pertain to each of these activities: o Instruction will include discussion of Force, Motion & Energy ▪ Key Concept 1: Pushing and pulling can cause an object to change position and to move. ▪ Key Concept 2: Work happens when a force is used to move an object over a distance. ▪ Key Concept 3: Tools such as swings, balls, pulleys, and wagons can be used to help move objects. ▪ Guiding Questions: • How can we cause an object to change position and to move? • What is work? • What tools can we use to show work is being done?

Camp RIO 4th Grade Curriculum Description ➢ While photographing on the Camp RIO property, students will take a closer look at the various native taxa and natural features in their immediate surroundings. The activity period will revolve around the following objectives: • An overview of the ecological landscape will guide students to point their cameras at certain subjects • Students will be tasked to search for a particular natural pattern or assemblage of related organisms/natural features • Students will also discover how light affects their shots. They’ll be guided to prepare their stance and camera settings for appropriate exposures • The value of photography in stewardship of earth’s resources and the conservation of biodiversity in natural landscapes ➢ Students will learn skills such as primitive fire-starting, camping, whittling, outdoor cooking or crisis survival. Guiding questions for this activity are as follows: • What resources exist in the wild landscape? • What tools are most useful in the outdoors and how are they best utilized? • What are physical and chemical characteristics of fire and fire-starting materials? • What sorts of ecological features can be used to find readily available resources in the natural landscape?
