Piedmont Pets March 1, 2018 By Paulette Dean Although it is hard to know with a certainty how many pets (companion animals) there are, it is generally believed that American households have: 88.3 million cats, 74.8 million dogs, 142 million freshwater fish, and 24.3 million smaller animals. The number of cats being kept as pets has surpassed the number of dogs; experts believe this is probably due to the fact that we work long hours and cats are believed to require less attention. Even though there are more cats in homes, dogs remain the most popular pet; it is thought that more households have more than one cat. Hamsters are ranked as the third most popular pet. They were originally discovered in Syria and then shipped to laboratories all over the world in 1938. Many parents believe that hamsters are a good “starter pet” for their children. The fourth most popular pet is fish, with goldfish being the most common one. The benefits of having an aquarium have long been touted. Sadly, many people do not provide large enough aquarium space. Mice rank as the fifth most popular pet. These friendly creatures only live three years, and are like all other companion animals in that they have very specific physical needs. Guinea pigs are close behind mice in popularity. In some countries, they are a meat source, but in the United States, they have a large following of human fans. They do not climb, do not bite, and have few health problems.

A Healthy Family Lifestyle Study Researchers at the University of Virginia invite all interested families of children ages 8 to 12 to join a healthy lifestyle study that is part of a team effort between Danville Parks and Recreation, Children’s Healthcare Center and the University of Virginia. With a flip of a coin, you will be randomized into one of these programs: Family Connections or iChoose. The purpose of the study is to compare two childhood obesity treatment programs to see which one is the best fit for your community. The study includes free health screenings, small group healthy living classes and telephone support calls. Families will receive $300 in gift cards for participating in the study. Danville Utilities warns of bill payment scam Danville Utilities is warning its customers about a payment scam involving a threat to disconnect service if payment of their utility bill is not made immediately. Businesses are the target.
As part of his scheduled visits in Virginia on Tuesday, February 27, Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson toured Danville Community College’s precision machining and welding facilities, led by DCC Director of Advanced Manufacturing Troy Simpson. As staples of DCC’s workforce training options, these programs have received national attention thanks to their role in helping to create a workforce pipeline in support of economic development efforts in Danville, Pittsylvania County, and beyond. In this scam, a business receives a phone call from an individual falsely claiming to be with the Danville Utilities Department. The individual is threatening to disconnect service if the business does not make immediate payment. The business is asked to provide a credit card number in order to make payment. A business answering service alerted Danville Utilities today that they were receiving calls involving the threat to disconnect service. Danville Utilities does not contact customers by phone and demand payment. Instead, customers who have delinquent accounts receive multiple notifications by letter from Danville Utilities over the course of several weeks prior to electric service disconnection — never just a single notification before disconnection. Utility bill payment scams are not new. Guard against fraud. Never provide a Social Security number, credit card number or banking information to anyone requesting it unless you initiated the contact and know the identity of the person with whom you are speaking. If you receive a call from someone you do not know and who is urging you to make a payment to Danville Utilities, capture the phone number and then hang up and contact Central Collections at 434-799-5125 or visit the Charles H. Harris Financial Service Center, which is located at 311 Memorial Drive.

VA Chief Shulkin’s Excellent Adventure --I really hate when this happens: Someone you trust to do the right things turns out to possibly not be trustworthy after all. This is what has happened with Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin. The facts look bad. Shulkin was invited to London for a two-day meeting of officials from various countries to talk about veterans issues. Before going, he asked staff to put together a side trip to Denmark to speak with the Danes about Danish healthcare. Shulkin’s wife traveled with him. Approval for paying her way was declined when it was determined that it wasn’t in the government’s best interest. Up stepped his chief of staff, who, after altering emails, claimed that Shulkin was to receive an award at the ambassador’s place in Copenhagen. Therefore, by the rules, the wife’s travel would be paid. Except there was no award. A VA employee, working with the wife on her wish list of things to see and do, played travel agent, on VA time. While in London, Shulkin and his wife attended Wimbledon using tickets given to them by an alleged friend of his wife. During the subsequent investigation interview, that “friend” could not remember Shulkin’s wife’s name. During the nine days they were away, only three-and-a-half days were spent in official meetings. Among a long list of unofficial activities, they visited palaces, took tours, zipped over to Sweden for dinner, went to Buckingham Palace, took a Thames River cruise and much more, apparently dragging security staff along the whole way. Changes in travel plans added $15,699 to airfare costs, but there was insufficient documentation to verify all of the other expenses, which totaled $122,000. He was born on June 14, 1947, in Fresno, CA, to Clara Bryant Austin and the late Rex Austin. Mr. Austin worked as a truck driver and a mechanic and was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He is survived by his wife, Shelia Grayson Austin, of the residence; children, Michael Austin, Jr., Richard Austin, and Terry Peterson; grandchildren, Amanda Austin, Levi Peterson, Andrew Austin, Shandie Peterson, Breanna Diffey, Daniel Austin, Amber Peterson, Shelia Peterson, and Isabella Austin; great-grandchildren: Ayianna Jones, Presleigh Jones, Richard Austin, Nova Jones, and Daniel Austin; siblings, Shelia Miller, Carol Spangler, Rexaine Austin, Penny Warkentin, Steve Austin, and Kathleen Austin. “Mirror, Mirror”
The day itself was utterly lovely. A slight breeze blew in off of the ocean, the seagulls were squawking contentedly, and my toes were in their favorite place: the white sand of the coast. And yet despite all of that, my eyes were fixed in horror at the repulsive vision parading down the shoreline in all of his pasty white glory, leering at the women on the beach as he sauntered by. To say that the man was huge would be an understatement. Mind you, that in itself is not the problem; I am not judging his size, he may not have been able to help that. But what he certainly could have helped, in addition to his lecherous gazes, was his choice of attire, namely a woefully insufficient Speedo. It honestly took me a moment to realize that he even had that much on. His aggressively shaking posterior was actively swallowing it more and more with every step he took, and seemed to be “gnom gnoming” as it ingested it, turning it into a nearly invisible man-thong. His belly had completely covered it in the front, at first glance he literally appeared completely naked. Mothers were actually shielding their children’s eyes as he passed. Any man walking around that naked in front of women and little girls today and staring like he did would most assuredly be charged with sexual harassment. And then someone murmured what everyone was thinking: “Did he not look in the mirror?”
That question still resonates with me to this day. In fact, I remember my own “did he not look in the mirror moment” from my teenage years. 80s style shorts, half shirt, tennis shoes, and those hideous knee-length socks with three red stripes on each one... The girl I went to meet that night took one look at me and refused to be seen with me. The apostle James, half brother of Jesus and author of the New Testament book that bears his name, had some thoughts on mirrors as well, specifically the mirror of God’s word. In James 1:22-25 he said, “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass (a mirror): For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.” James was dealing with people who look into the Bible, the mirror of God’s word, see themselves in all of their flaws, and then walk away not making the necessary changes. The Bible, for the child of God, is designed to show us our flaws and help us make the necessary corrections. You see, being saved will get a person to heaven, but for making it through this life we also need something called sanctification. We need to be set apart from sin, to God. Verse twenty-five reminds us that it is the person who looks into the Bible, the

“perfect law of liberty,” and continues in it, that will end up being blessed. Simply reading it is not enough; we must continue in it, we must abide by what it says, we must make it our authoritative guide for life. If we do, what kind of life will it produce? Verse twenty-seven answers that question. It says, “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.” This verse describes the two aspects of pure religion, and they are not multiple choice. Pure religion, sanctification, consists both of service to others and purity from sin. In other words, a person who visits nursing homes and orphanages and feeds the homeless, and also gets drunk and curses and sleeps with someone to whom they are not married does not have pure religion. On the flip side, a person who never curses, never even drinks, is 100% faithful to his spouse, and yet never serves those in need also does not have pure religion. Pure religion consists both of holy living and service. Religion is not salvation; but if you are saved, you should be looking into the mirror of God’s word and becoming more and more religious, more and more service oriented, more and more set apart from sin, to God. Whisk together the flour, salt, sugar, and baking powder. Add in the milk, eggs (one at a time) and vanilla to the dry ingredients. Slowly stir in melted butter and mix until just incorporated. Pour into a well-greased 9x13 pan. Mix topping ingredients together with a large spoon (3/4 cup butter softened, brown sugar, flour and cinnamon). Use clean hands if it makes it easier. Drop evenly over cake mixture (basically plop spoonfuls on top). Swirl the topping into the cake mixture with a knife going up and down the length of the pan. Try not to go too deep into the cake with the swirls, but if you do, it will still taste great. Bake at 350 for 30-35 minutes. Check at 30 and if a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, it is done. It might take closer to 35 minutes, maybe even a bit longer depending on your oven and how deep you made the swirls. Whisk ingredients together to make the glaze. Top cake with the glaze by drizzling it over the cake while it’s still slightly warm. Serve immediately for best taste but it’s also great once cooled. Enjoy!
