This poster illustrates the steps used by sites to Facilitate the IRB Process Engage & Train Nurses and Manage Data Collection
background • Clinical nurses are essential members of the research team and vital in the discovery of new knowledge to advance nursing care • Nurses are interested in participating in research but have limited time and resources when attempting to conduct clinical research
Issues & Challenges
IRB
about the study • The PEDSS study is a research consortium consisting of 16 institutions led by an experienced nurse researcher • The purpose of the PEDSS study is to implement and evaluate a nurse-led parent educational discharge support strategies (PEDSS) to educate and support parents of children newly diagnosed with cancer
pedss: study nurse experience “Being a bedside nurse involved in the PEDSS Research Study has pushed me to take a step back and rethink my delivery of education to patients and families. It has opened the door to reflection on how as a nurse I can focus delivery of information in ways that parents will be able to take in during a difficult time. Being involved in the study has also made me appreciate the depth of information provided to families at time of diagnosis and has allowed me to be a better advocate for families as they prepare for discharge.” Katherine Waller, PEDSS Study Nurse
Nurse Engagement & Training
Data Collection
Pearls of Wisdom
Limited research support staff from the departments of nursing and/or medicine to help with paperwork and submission Time delays associated with receiving IRB approval
Understand institutional IRB policies and workflows early in the process Utilize IRB of record from primary site Incorporate a regulatory staff member on the study team Escalate concerns regarding delays to leaders within the institution and to the primary site
Challenge to keep nurses engaged across inpatient/ outpatient settings for a longitudinal study PEDSS nurse turnover during multi-year study Involving nurses who practice during off shifts and weekends
Determine the right size of study team to promote engagement and stability over time Nurses’ commitment to complete CITI/HIPAA training during shifts Support from nurse manager to complete PEDSS training and conduct research. Empower nurses to learn new skills (consenting families, performing intervention, data collection)
Ability to consistently communicate data collection windows to the study team Closed looped communication when data collection completed Ensure personnel who complete activities are trained appropriately
Utilize email and meeting requests to communicate upcoming due dates for data collection Create a designated and easily accessible space to store study-related materials
conclusion • Strong leadership at magnet hospitals is essential to empower nurses to participate in one or more steps of the research process • Nurses in all areas of their career can effectively participate in clinical research and contribute towards to the growth of nursing research leaders • Nursing practice will be enhanced when more nurses participate in research and generate new evidence for nursing care of children
