HOLY EUCHARIST RITE I THE LITURGY OF THE WORD Entrance (Congregation Stands) Salutation Celebrant: People:

Book of Common Prayer p. 323 Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.

Collect for Purity (Said by all) Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Summary of the Law BCP p. 324 Celebrant: Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. Gloria

BCP p. 324

Glory be to God on high, and on earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen Collect of the Day Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And with thy spirit. Celebrant: Let us pray.

BCP p. 185

Almighty and everlasting God, whose will it is to restore all things in thy well-beloved Son, the King of kings and Lord of lords: Mercifully grant that the peoples of the earth, divided and enslaved by sin, may be freed and brought together under his most gracious rule; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The First Lesson All are seated

Ezekiel 34:11-16, 20-24

Lector: A reading from the Book of Ezekiel. Thus says the Lord God: I myself will search for my sheep, and will seek them out. As shepherds seek out their flocks when they are among their scattered sheep, so I will seek out my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places to which they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness. I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their own land; and I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the watercourses, and in all the inhabited parts of the land. I will feed them with good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel shall be their pasture; there they shall lie down in good grazing land, and they shall feed on rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I will make them lie down, says the Lord God. I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, but the fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them with justice. Therefore, thus says the Lord God to them: I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep. Because you pushed with flank and shoulder, and butted at all the weak animals with your horns until you scattered them far and wide, I will save my flock, and they shall no longer be ravaged; and I will judge between sheep and sheep. I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he shall feed them: he shall feed them and be their shepherd. And I, the Lord, will be their God, and my servant David shall be prince among them; I, the Lord, have spoken. Lector: People:

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 100 Jubilate Deo Be joyful in the Lord, all you lands; * serve the Lord with gladness and come before his presence with a song. Know this: The Lord himself is God; * he himself has made us, and we are his; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise; * give thanks to him and call upon his Name. For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; * and his faithfulness endures from age to age.

The Second Lesson

Ephesians 1:15-23

Lector: A reading from the Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians. I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. Lector: People:

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Gospel Celebrant: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. People: Glory be to thee, O Lord.

Matthew 25:31-46

Jesus said, “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left. Then the king will say to those at his right hand, ‘Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?’ And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.’ Then he will say to those at his left hand, ‘You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ Then they also will answer, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?’ Then he will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” Celebrant: People:

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to thee, O Christ.

The Sermon A brief period of silence 3

The Reverend Dr. Robert Prichard

The Nicene Creed

BCP p.358

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of the People Form VI The Leader and People pray responsively

Amen. Confession

Celebrant:

We pray to you also for the forgiveness of our sins.

A brief period of silence.

Amen. Celebrant Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up unto the Lord. Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. It is meet and right so to do.

Celebrant: It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God... Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying, Celebrant and People: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts: Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord Most High. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The people kneel or stand. Celebrant: All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, for that thou didst create heaven and earth, and didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption… By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost all honor and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Amen. And now, as our Savior Christ hath taught us, we are bold to say, The Lord’s Prayer BCP p. 336 Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

May you carry the prayers of all of us. Post-Communion Prayer Celebrant: Let us pray. Appreciating Advent Sunday Forum, 9:30 to 10:15 am, Parish Hall. With the Christmas season right around the corner, many of us may already be feeling the stress that the season inevitably brings. Shopping, decorating, baking, and traveling all consume more and more of our time and attention during this time of year. What can get lost is the understanding that this time is also one of the most joyful times of the liturgical year, a time we call Advent. Advent is a time when we are called to realign our focus from the cares of our day-to-day lives to the jubilant anticipation of the birth of Jesus. But what does it mean to live a life with focus on both God and the love of Jesus? Join us during Advent for a series of forums that will provide an overview of the

contemplative tradition within Christianity. This three-part series will focus on the biblical precedent for the contemplative life, the monastic life and its evolution over the past 2,000 years of Christianity, and what is being called the New Monastic Movement. Forums will be held December 3, 10, and 17 from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Questions? Contact Daniel Johnson, Seminarian at [email protected]

Announcements Collection of Staff Purse for Christmas. The Vestry approved the collection of a staff purse to distribute to the St. George's staff for Christmas. Few of us really understand how much they do to make our congregation function, most of it unseen and behind the scenes. We've had a wonderful year, and it would not have been possible without the outstanding work done by our staff. You can either drop off a check in the offering plate or at the office with a notation that it is for the "Staff Purse". Please join the Vestry in thanking them for their outstanding service. Final date to contribute is Sunday, January 7th. Youth Confirmation Class In anticipation of our Bishop's visit in January, St. George's is hosting a youth confirmation class, in cooperation with other Arlington Episcopal churches. This is an opportunity for mature middle schoolers and high schoolers to gather, learn, and reflect, so that each student is prepared to make their own decision about whether or not they are ready to be Confirmed. The class is planned for Sunday afternoons-- Nov. 26th, Dec. 3rd, Dec. 10th, Dec. 17th, and January 7th, between 12:30 and 2pm in the EYC room. Please email or speak with Rev. John if you or a student you know might be interested: [email protected] to Your Teens about the Tough Stuff, Tuesday, November 28th, 7 to 8:30 p.m. St. Mary’s Episcopal Church 2609 North Glebe Rd. Arlington, VA 22207. Are you facing life with teenagers or pre-teens and need helping talking to them about the challenges and temptations that come with growing up? Do you need help getting past the eye rolling and awkwardness of starting the conversation? Then come to St. Mary’s Episcopal Church on Tuesday, November 28th from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Our speaker will be Dr. Heather Tedesco, a McLean-based applied psychologist who works directly with parents in her practice to improve family life and to support long-term development of happy, authentically successful children, teens and adults. Dr. Tedesco will share some local statistics on teen drug and alcohol use as well as teen sexual activity. She will help parents examine what gets in the way when it comes to having these important conversations and will offer practical, concrete strategies for how to facilitate talks with your teens about the “tough” stuff in their lives. St. Mary’s Senior Associate Priest, Mother Amy Slater, will offer guidance on how to lean on your faith in times of family stress. Friends, neighbors and family are welcome! Light snacks and beverages will be offered. Questions? Email Elizabeth Hale at [email protected] or visit https://stmarysarlington.org/. St. George’s Men’s Group will meet on Saturday, December 2nd, at 8:00 AM in the Rhodes Room at church. A light breakfast of bagels, donuts, muffins and Starbuck’s coffee will be served starting at 8:00 AM. Our discussion topic will be: Patriotism vs Nationalism. What do these terms mean? How do these sentiments influence our internal national discourse as we struggle with difficult social issues and differences? How do they impact our relationship with other countries? What about the concept of American Exceptionalism? Where do our Christian values fit in? These are just some of the questions we hope to discuss. We hope that you will join us! If you have questions now, or if you have trouble getting in the front door of the church on the day of the meeting, call John Churchman on his cell phone at 703-300-6574 or Robbie Williams at 703-864-8955
