HOLY BAPTISM AND EUCHARIST RITE I THE LITURGY OF THE WORD Entrance (Congregation Stands) Salutation Celebrant: People:

Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.

The Celebrant then continues Celebrant: People: Celebrant: People:

There is one Body and one Spirit; There is one hope in God's call to us; One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism; One God and Father of all.

Collect of the Day Celebrant: People: Celebrant:

BCP p. 163

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray.

Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan didst proclaim him thy beloved Son and anoint him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into his Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Savior; who with thee and the same Holy Spirit liveth and reigneth, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. The First Lesson All are seated

Genesis 1:1-5

Lector: A reading from the Book of Genesis. In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. Lector: People:

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 29 Afferte Domino

BCP Page 605

Ascribe to the Lord, you gods, * ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his Name; * worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. The voice of the Lord is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders; * the Lord is upon the mighty waters. The voice of the Lord is a powerful voice; * the voice of the Lord is a voice of splendor. The voice of the Lord breaks the cedar trees; * the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon; He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, * and Mount Hermon like a young wild ox. The voice of the Lord splits the flames of fire; the voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; * the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the Lord makes the oak trees writhe * and strips the forests bare. And in the temple of the Lord * all are crying, "Glory!" The Lord sits enthroned above the flood; * the Lord sits enthroned as King for evermore. The Lord shall give strength to his people; * the Lord shall give his people the blessing of peace. The Second Lesson Lector: A reading from the Acts of the Apostles.

Acts 19:1-7

While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the interior regions and came to Ephesus, where he found some disciples. He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?” They replied, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” Then he said, “Into 2

what then were you baptized?” They answered, “Into John’s baptism.” Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus.” On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied— altogether there were about twelve of them. Lector: People:

The Gospel Celebrant: People:

Mark 1:4-11 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory be to thee, O Lord.

John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.” Celebrant: People:

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to thee, O Christ.

Thanksgiving over the Water

BCP p. 306

The Celebrant blesses the water, first saying Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise. Celebrant: We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. At the following words, the Celebrant touches the water Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. The Baptism

BCP p. 307

Each candidate is presented by name to the Celebrant, or to an assisting priest or deacon, who then immerses, or pours water upon, the candidate. Then the Bishop or Priest places a hand on the person's head, marking on the forehead the sign of the cross (using Chrism if desired). The Celebrant continues: Paul Thomas, I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. You are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ's own forever. Amen. When these actions have been completed for all candidates, the Bishop or Priest, at a place in full sight of the congregation, prays over them, saying Let us pray. 8

BCP p. 308

Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon this your servant the forgiveness of sin, and have raised him to the new life of grace. Sustain him, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give him an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen. The Celebrant says: Let us welcome the newly baptized. Celebrant and People: We receive you into the household of God. Confess the faith of Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, and share with us in his eternal priesthood. The Peace Celebrant: People:

A small band of St. Georgians and friends meets for breakfast and informal Bible study each Tuesday morning between 7-8 AM at the Ballston Deli, on Fairfax drive one block west of the church. We invite you to join us for conversation, coffee, and usually (but not always) some Bible reading together. Drop-ins are welcome, and you can arrive late and leave early if your schedule demands. There’s no homework. We just finished reading the additions to the book of Esther found in the Apocrypha and after a December recess will be selecting new book of the Bible to read starting on January 9. Over the course of twenty plus years (starting with a group of men who met before work near Farragut West), we’ve hopped and skipped through most of the Old and New Testaments, some books taking months, others weeks. On the first Tuesday of each month we take a break to read from the Psalms. Our “study” isn’t systematic. We read and reflect together and our discussion sometimes goes off on a tangent as we contemplate the relevance of the Bible reading to our Christian lives in today’s society. Contact any of our current regulars for more information: Norma Kacen, Mary Martha Churchman, Nina Janopaul and Bart Naylor, Mike Nelson, Wayne Lewis. Friday, January 12 at 8pm • Works by Stanley Curtis about St. George’s stained-glass windows. On Nov. 28th, Mallory Bucell testified at a very late night hearing on allocating $5M in carryover funds for affordable housing. After some debate, the allocation was approved 4:1. Kathie Panfil and other members of Arlington VOICE have been meeting with the Arlington Public Schools Superintendent to identify means for supporting immigrant students at our schools.
