A Foundation of Humility

The Beacon August 5 & 6, 2017

Welcome to Shalimar UMC We are so glad you’ve chosen to worship with us this week! Hearing assistance devices are available for the Sanctuary. Please see an usher to obtain these aids. Enjoy fellowship, coffee, and snacks in the Family Life Center Gym between worship services.

O ur Visio n Christ-centered, multigenerational, family and community relevant ministries through worship, discipleship, and mission.

O ur Missi on REA C H, T EA C H, and S EN D We REACH out to our congregation, community, and the world to TEACH the word of God as provided in the Holy Scripture, and SEND our members and missionaries to be witnesses to God’s grace and His promise of eternal life to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Wors hi p S ervices B reak Fre e Our Saturday evening service begins at 6:00 pm in the Family Life Center opening with a gathering and fellowship time at 5:30 pm. This transformational service involves modern music, multimedia, and a style of preaching that is practical and participatory. T raditions At 8:00 and 11:00 am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00 service. Conn ect At 9:30 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Fre edom At 11:07 Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a non-traditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.

Philip’s Focus A Second Opportunity to Participate in 12x12 Twelve months ago I had no idea what to expect with the first year of 12x12. We have had twelve people meet over thirty times and have grown in our discipleship, leadership, and as a team together. This team has exceeded my expectations! We now are turning toward the completion of year one. Some of our team will be forming their own teams and small groups in the coming months. We all are seeking to plan ways to make disciples. I am excited to announce there will be a second opportunity to participate in 12x12. Would you like to participate? We are going to repeat the 12x12 process at the of September for all those interested. What is 12x12? 12x12 is recapturing some of our Biblical and historical concepts. Jesus began with twelve disciples that formed the church and changed the world. John Wesley organized class meetings (small groups) that laid the foundation for the birth of Methodism. Today, there are still great possibilities when a small team grows in discipleship and leadership together. Everyone is not ready for this kind of commitment. The timing may not be right. It’s okay to say “no” to an invitation like this if you are not ready. The goal in this invitation is to find twelve people who are ready for such a commitment. The general expectation is to meet around twelve months. There will be a meeting once a week for two hours. There will be an expectation of weekly attendance unless prevented. Each session we will seek to learn and grow in our discipleship together. The subjects will include essentials such as discipleship, prayer, Bible Study, worship, service, gifts, witness, church, mission, leadership, and leading small groups and team building. Finally, each member will be trained and challenged to invite and identify twelve people for their own team next year. This means the hope is to have each member of the team launch their own team next year. The hope is we will radically increase our discipleship making capacity at Shalimar UMC. Let me know if you are interested. I would love to explore this possibility with you. Shalom, Philip Dr. Philip McVay, Lead Pastor [email protected]

Holy Land Tours UMC Holy Land Tours in early 2018 There are two United Methodist Holy Land Tours scheduled for 2018: Tour 1: Join Bishop David Graves and the Alabama-West Florida Conference of the UMC for the 10 day “Holy Land Classic” tour from January 16-25, 2018. Tour 2: Join Rev. Larry & Vicki Bryars for the 10 day “Holy Land 2018” tour from February 19-28, 2018. Splash of Joy I will begin their journey into the Bible together on Wed, Aug 30th, from 9:30-11:30 am in FLC Room 106. Please join us as we study Finding I Am by Lysa TerKeurst. We will explore the seven I AM statements of Jesus found in the Gospel of John. Through this study we will learn to trade feelings of emptiness and depletion for a more personal fulfillment in knowing who Jesus is. You can learn to live with the freedom God has for you and gain a better understanding of how Jesus’ words 2,000 years ago are so very applicable to the answers you are searching for today. Perhaps you’d like to invite a friend to come with you. If you’ve NEVER been to a study, that’s OK. We love learning and growing together. Although this is a large group of women, we will break into smaller groups for homework discussion and prayer. Fellowship is so vital for our growth as disciples. Your children or grandchildren are always welcome in our nursery. Books will be available the first day of study. If you have questions, you may contact leader, Sara Michaelson, [email protected] or 863-9722.

Splash of Joy II

Fall Women’s Bible Study Please join us for study and fellowship this fall. A new 6-week study will begin on Wednesday, August 30th, 9:30-11:30 am in FLC Room 207. We will be studying The Power of God’s Names by Dr. Tony Evans. The study format will include a combination of video and group discussions. Dr. Evans will help us to examine how God reveals Himself in scripture through the use of different names., By examining the biblical meanings of these names and the related personal attributes of God, we will be able to experience God more deeply. Your children or grandchildren are always welcome in our nursery. For additional information please contact Susan Peters, [email protected] or 613-6966. Hope to see you there.

This Week’s Guide for Groups & Individuals Foolproof Week 4: A Foundation of Humility Jesus warns us in our passage this morning that we shouldn't "babble on" or "repeat words again and again." He then goes on in 6:9ff to give the disciples a model of prayer, which we today have titled The Lord's Prayer. This prayer was designed to show them how to pray, not necessarily become the new memorized prayer. Now I'm not saying we should stop praying it, but have you thought about what the model he gave us was? Alpha International and the 24-7 Prayer Movement partnered together to develop a free prayer course that's online. It's six weeks and uses the Lord's Prayer as a way to deepen your prayer model. 1) Adoration - "Our Father in heaven" 2) Petition - "Give us this day" 3) Intercession - "Your Kingdom come" 4) Perseverance - "Your will be done" 5) Listening - "Our daily bread" 6) Warfare - "Deliver us from evil" Want to check it out? Visit prayercourse.org. They have video lessons along with discussion guides. Use it in your group, or on your own. You won't regret it.

Collection Sunday: Aug. 6th The first Sunday of each month is food collection time for Sharing & Caring and monetary collection for our discretionary fund through the Communion Rail Offering. Collection boxes are in the Narthex and FLC. Thank you for donating!

Prayer Room The Prayer Room is always available for your use. The code to enter is 4125. On Sunday mornings, after every service, someone will be in the Prayer Room to pray with you, if you would like. They will not bother you if you would like time to yourself. There are prayer shawls available for your use as well. A Prayer Box and Prayer Cards are available for you to leave a prayer request for the Pastors and/or Prayer Team to pray for you or a situation you would like lifted up. There have been great reports of use for this special place.

Prayer Chain To add someone to the prayer chain please email [email protected] or contact the SUMC church office at 651-0721. After hours you may call Pat Brantley 830-1355. If you would like to receive the prayer requests through email, please call the church office, 651-0721 or email [email protected]. A printed copy of our church family’s prayer concerns is available each Sunday in the Narthex and FLC Lobby. If you’d like to start receiving the Prayer List via email, please select it on the Communication Card inside the Beacon.

CHECK IT OUT ! Francine Rivers fans will be happy to note we finally have a copy of her much-in-demand, The Scarlet Thread. It’s about two women, centuries apart, joined through a tattered journal. It’s a tale of courage and of coming to know Jesus. And if you might be one of the “several” who have Rivers’ fabulous book, Redeeming Love, just waiting to be returned, please do so! There’s a “waiting list.” Randy Alcorn fans will enjoy his little book, The Chasm, now on our shelves. It’s an “other worldly” tale; a vibrant mix of emotions, revelations, and reflection that focuses on one man’s journey to “noticing.” We’ve also added several new David Jeremiah books to our offerings. Is This the End? is an entirely compelling update on the earlier version of 2011 and addresses these tumultuous times and how Christians are to live within. Two other Jeremiah books now on our shelves are R = Reset and The Sovereign and the Suffering. Enjoy! And PLEASE look around at home for those wandered-off books that need to be returned to us!! AND, check on your DVD shelves…we need The Case for Christ; God’s Not Dead; Dolphin Tale; Gifted Hands; Charlotte’s Web and many others to re-appear!! Thanks !!!

Merge Young Adults Michelle Carmical - Lead Facilitator | 850-217-0391 A New Season of Life. We are excited to announce that we have expanded the Merge Young Adult Ministry to best accommodate the growing young adult population. It's a great time to introduce our expansion of Merge. Merge 1 College & Career (ages 18-23) Wednesdays | 6:30 pm—8:00 pm | Leader: Kyle Wilson Hope to see all the senior graduates on Wednesday. Please bring a friend. Even if you are going away to college, come and see what will be here for you when you come home for breaks. Merge 2 Young Adult group (age 23-30 and beyond) Thursdays | 6:30—8:00 pm | Leader: Alicia Shields Let us ask a difficult question....???? Are YOU able to relate? It's something we are faced with everyday: whether to relate or not relate to the countless people in our circles. From the time we are born, relationships are constantly shaping who we are and how we react to the world around us. We are all looking to have healthier, more meaningful relationships, so where do we start? Our ability to relate to others begins with our ability to receive what God has given and is giving us. We have to be able to receive what God has for us before trying to have a meaningful relationship with ourselves and with those around us. Relat(able) looks at relationships the way God intended for them to be; looking at how we relate to God, ourselves, our parents, our friends, in dating and marriage and in relationships that seem impossible to fix. What if instead of looking for the right person, we become that person, that friend or spouse everyone is looking for? What if we start holding ourselves to the standards we expect of those around us? We only have one life to leave a permanent mark on eternity; why not make our relationships count.

Merge 1 & 2 United for Sunday School Sundays | 10:00 am | Hunter Bethea (summer young adult leader) BOTH MERGE GROUPS and all BIG events meet together at #10 2nd St (behind the church in the house with a UMC flame on the garage).

Our awesome prayer team, Jim, Polly, and Suzy, were really reaching into the heart of the community and bringing it back to prayer and a safe harbor for anyone that needed prayer requests and someone to talk to, even giving them parting words...with the Bible.
