A New Faith-Life Key Verses: Matthew 9:28-30 - When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.” v.29 Then he touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith be it done to you.” v.30 And their eyes were opened… Acts 14:8-10 - Now at Lystra there was a man sitting who could not use his feet. He was crippled from birth and had never walked. v.9 He listened to Paul speaking. And Paul, looking intently at him and seeing that he had faith to be made well, v.10 said in a loud voice, “Stand upright on your feet.” And he sprang up and began walking. 2 Corinthians 5:7 - …for we walk by faith, not by sight. The Objective: Faith is necessary for your journey. Jesus spent a large portion of His time teaching and demonstrating faith to His disciples. Christ knew that the faith-level of His followers would determine the success and advancement of His Kingdom. In this lesson, we will learn how important it is to develop a faith-life.

Faith operates in the realm of the Spirit. There is a natural world and a spiritual world. Some say the spiritual world is more real than the natural world because the natural world sprang forth from the spiritual. God is Spirit and He exists in an eternal and ever-present now. The apostle, Paul calls the spiritual realm “heavenly places.” Ephesians 1:3 - Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places… Ephesians 2:5-6 - … by grace you have been saved and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.

Faith is how we operate and navigate in the spiritual realm. What is foundational faith? Faith can be defined as “having trust, assurance, or confidence in another person or that person’s word.” Therefore, faith in God involves an exchange of trust from one’s self to God. This is the foundation of a disciple’s life. The Power of Faith 1) Faith ____________ God. Hebrews 11:6 - And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. 2) Faith brings ______________. Ephesians 2:8 - For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God…. 3) Faith energizes _____________. Mark 11:24 - Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. 4) Faith ___________ _______________. Mark 11:22, 23 - And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. v.23 Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. How does your “faith-life” in God develop?

1) Faith begins with ____________. a) You must see what God sees; then your faith will rise above your circumstances. b) The first and clearest example of faith and vision is found in Genesis 15:1-6. Here, God gave Abram a vision of what He intended to accomplish through this man and his barren wife. i) God gave him a vision: “Look toward heaven, and number the stars… so shall your offspring be.” ii) Abram believed God for what looked impossible. 2) Faith develops when you understand that it is a __________ from God. a) Everyone has been given a “measure of faith” (Romans 12:3). b) Sometimes faith is called the “muscle of your spirit.” It is there; but it must be developed. 3) Faith also develops through your _______________ of God. a) You cannot trust someone you do not know. b) This underscores the importance of daily time with God in prayer and the Scriptures. 4) Faith increases as we increase our ______________ of God’s Word. a) Romans 10:17 NKJV – So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. b) God communicates His thoughts through His Word. c) When God enables you to hear what He is saying by the Spirit, this creates within you a response of faith. 5) Faith grows as you remember His past __________________.

a) Hebrews 13:8 NKJV – Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. b) When you remember what God did for you yesterday, you will have faith to believe He’ll take care of you tomorrow. c) Faith is not a struggle… it is __________. 6) Faith is affected powerfully by our ____________. Death and life are in the power of the tongue… - Proverbs 18:21 a) James teaches us that our words often direct us like a rudder steering a massive ship. James 3:4, 5 - Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. v.5 So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. Your words must come into agreement with the vision God has given you. b) ____________ is a powerful component to living the life of faith. Romans 4:20, 21 – No unbelief made him [Abraham] waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, v.21 fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. i) Watch your conversations and the words of those around you. ii) Remember the evil report of the 10 spies in Numbers 13:30, 31. They destroyed the faith of the nation by their negative words. An entire generation lived outside of the Promised Land because they refused to believe God. Numbers 13:31 - Then the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are.” 7) God is not moved by our ___________; He is moved by our ___________!

59

a) Without faith, we have a tendency to try to please God through works and this often leads to discouragement and anxiety. b) God wants us to trust Him like a resting child in his father’s arms. Ultimately, the test of faith is our ability to cease from our own works and rest in God. Hebrews 4:3 - … we who have believed enter that rest… Faith is our confidence for the journey. That confidence rests on ___________ and our ability to ___________ what we are seeing from God in the Spirit. Growing in vision and trust should be a high priority for every disciple of Christ.

1. If you were really honest with God and yourself, how would you evaluate the way you maintain, develop, use, and grow in, your faith? Are you using your faith as you once did, or have you slowly backed away from the strong stance of faith you once possessed? 2. When an attack comes against you, do you stand strong in the face of it, or do you tend to fall to pieces? If the latter, what does this tell you about the way you are maintaining your faith? 3. Pastor Ron taught, “Sometimes faith is called the ‘muscle of your spirit.’ It is there, but it must be developed.” What do you need to do to keep your faith in top-notch shape?

Write out a declaration of faith on the back of this page based on a key promise from God’s Word (an “anchor” verse) as the basis for your faith statement for whatever area(s) of life you need to declare God’s Word. For example: Faith for finances – “I declare that God is our provider and we are going to make it financially (Philippians 4:19). Record this declaration in your smartphone or on a post-it note and commit to saying it out loud at least three times a day for seven days. Note how it affects your faith and share this.
