Old Testament Reading The Story, page 255-256 Elder Anne Hill Daniel 3:8-30 (page 822 in pew Bible) Prayer of Confession (in unison, followed by silent prayer) Lord of peace and God of love and truth, grant us your peace. Send your peace to the world. Take from the world the threat of war, and bring in the time when the nations will live in friendship with each other, united as subjects of that Kingdom of which You are King, as members of that Family of which you are Father. Send peace within ourselves. Help us live in peace with those around us. Rid us of the bitter and unforgiving spirit. Control our temper and our tongue. Grant that we may nourish no grudge within our hearts and no memory of injury within our minds, and grant that neighborly love may banish hate. Take from us the worries that distract us, and give us more trust. Take from us the doubts that disturb us, and make us sure of You. Take from us the false ambitions which drive us, and make us more content to serve you where we are and as we are. All this we ask through Jesus Christ. (silent prayers) Amen. --taken from William Barclay’s Prayers for the Christian Year, 2nd Epiphany

Pointing Ahead—January 18, 2015 Welcome to worship, good friends and neighbors, We come to that particular season in the life of God’s people when they are trying to cling to hope amidst their decades of Exile. The themes of Exile and Return bear great weight in the word and work of God now, even into our time. For much of the Scriptures speak to that Remnant of God’s people faithful and true to Him. They have been scattered, by many means. And it is only the Good Shepherd, the Great Shepherd, the Chief Shepherd, as the New Testament describes Jesus, who can truly bring them home, back together. Do you have someone in your life who seems to be in exile? Maybe a loved one or friend or neighbor or family member who seems so distant, seemingly captured by alien hands or spirit; abducted, kidnapped by life’s threats? Yes, I have a couple of folk on my list. Frankly, there are many about town and our neighborhood who have been taken into exile by foreign gods, who still live in the same place. But they’ve been captivated by the idols of the world, and are spending their lives or chasing after that which will let them down in the end. So here is Daniel today, who like a lighthouse continues to ‘let his light shine’ amidst the towering power of Babylon, protected by God and placed strategically for God’s purposes. We say that God’s Upper Story is working out even amidst Daniel’s Lower Story. So might it also for us. In a few weeks, we’ll see Esther also in that season of the next empire, who is placed by God to protect her people, ‘for such a time as this.’

POINT LOMA COMMUNITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 2128 CHATSWORTH BLVD. SAN DIEGO, CA 92107 619.223.1633 POINTLOMACHURCH.ORG AT PLCPC WE SEEK TO EXPERIENCE JESUS, STRENGTHEN CHRIST’S CHURCH, JOURNEY INTO DEEPER FAITH, AND TRANSFORM OUR WORLD.

God give you that Grace, Mercy and Peace, that empowers you to ‘stand in the strength of the Lord and His might’ as you put on the whole armor of God in these days (Ephesians 6) just like Daniel. So that whether a fiery furnace or den of lions, you will trust and be not afraid. For Christ and His Kingdom, I would continue, Yours and His, Pastor John
