Call to Prayer

All to Jesus, I Surrender

Edwin Childs

Prayer of Confession (in unison, followed by silent prayer) God of all humanity, Your people come to You in prayer. Remind us of Your calling to be your passionate, gracious and faithful servants in the world. When we forget our own history and story, forgive us. When we do not honor our neighbor, forgive us. When we deny the humanity of any person, forgive us. When we repay evil with evil with our minds, hearts or hands, forgive us. Have mercy on us when we falter, and renew our spirits for the journey. (silent prayer) Amen. Written by Rev. Bruce Reyes-Chow Presbyterian Minister of an Online Church Affirmation of Grace

POINT LOMA COMMUNITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 2128 CHATSWORTH BLVD. SAN DIEGO, CA 92107 619.223.1633 POINTLOMACHURCH.ORG AT PLCPC WE SEEK TO EXPERIENCE JESUS, STRENGTHEN CHRIST’S CHURCH, JOURNEY INTO DEEPER FAITH, AND TRANSFORM OUR WORLD.

Pointing Ahead—July 20, 2014 Illegal immigration has been a controversial topic in our country for many years. Due to its controversial nature and the diversity of our congregation, I have been hesitant to discuss this issue in a public forum. As a pastor, it is not my right to be “political,” that isn’t the calling I have chosen. But, in light of the recent press on the thousands of unaccompanied minors that have recently crossed our border from Central America, it has made me ponder, “What is a true biblical response to this problem that exists 15 miles away from our church?” That is a question, that I, as one of your pastors, am responsible for answering. There are many issues in our country and our world that don’t involve us. Issues, at least, that we have the luxury to ignore. This is not one of them. Due to our proximity and our call/choice to be Christ followers, we have the responsibility to care about this issue and to help other Christians in our nation think biblically about it as well. We may not have much to say about the AIDS epidemic in Africa, or the humanitarian crises in Syria, or the Israeli/Palestinian controversy, but we should have a biblical framework for discussing something that affects people that we rub shoulders with on a daily basis. This morning, I hope to get us thinking, to begin a conversation, not just about America and our ideals, but about what it means to be a citizen of the Kingdom of God. Our dual citizenship allows us to relate, more than we might acknowledge, to a population of people who are living between countries as well. I pray that God would help us to listen. Blessings, Pastor Karla
