Access Tunnels at Western Ticket Hall - Dean Street The Crossrail tunnels are progressing well from Royal Oak and the first of our two tunnel boring machines (TBMs), Phyllis, is due to reach the western ticket hall on Dean Street in June 2013. BAM Ferrovial Kier (BFK), the contractor carrying out the work, has completed the excavation of the western ticket hall to 28m depth. The ticket hall will eventually be used to access the new Crossrail Station at Tottenham Court Road when it opens for passenger services in 2018. To prepare for the arrival of the TBMs a new phase of work has now started at Dean Street which involves building the pedestrian access tunnels and ventilation shafts. These tunnels and shafts are shorter and more curved than the train running-tunnels and so a different method of tunnelling is being used to build them. This involves a special excavator digging out the shape of the tunnel for a few metres and then spraying the walls with layers of concrete to form the support lining. This method is known as Sprayed Concrete Lining (SCL) and allows for a wide variety of shapes and sizes of tunnel to be constructed. We are initially constructing smaller pilot tunnels which help to control the way in which the ground is excavated and reduce the potential for ground settlement to occur. The tunnel is then widened to its full and final diameter. The process of removing the concrete forming the pilot tunnel it is called “breaking out”. The action of “breaking out” concrete using machines can sometimes be heard in buildings in the surrounding area, however, the degree of noise depends on the structure and foundations of each individual building. We are aware that the noise and vibration caused by these works could be a disturbance to businesses and residents in the Dean Street and Soho Square area and so we are actively identifying the least intrusive times for us to carry out these works by balancing the needs of the community. Recently we have been restricting these works to a couple of hours before and after the normal working day (9-5) due to the concentration of sound recording studios in the immediate area. We may have to extend the opportunity to breakout concrete through part of the night in order to ensure we can continue to meet our objectives. This “breaking out” will not happen on a daily basis and we will endeavour to give you as much notice when it is due to happen. As part of our work to identify the most appropriate times to undertake our breaking out works it would be helpful if you could contact the Crossrail Helpdesk on 0345 602 3813 or the [email protected] with your feedback as to the “best” times for our work to take place and provide your email address if you want to be notified about impending works. All our works are carefully monitored with noise and vibration equipment and we may approach you to ask if some monitoring equipment could be set up in your property for a short time. The plan overleaf shows the Soho and Tottenham Court Road areas with all the tunnels laid out underneath.

Duration of work 

Work is ongoing at the station box in Dean Street but a new phase of work has started which involves the construction of the access tunnels. This is 24 hour work for safety reasons and will continue for at least a year

There may be times when you could experience noise and vibration from the tunnel works

We will endeavour to carry out any noisy works during times when it causes the least disruption to the community



We will keep the noisy work to a minimum during the working day
