SENT: Week 26 – Sermon on Mars Hill Open in Prayer W elcom e/Introductions/Cast Vision Rem ind the Grow Group of the ground rules Share background for the story [Provide context by sharing what comes before the story.]

Paul, Silas, and Timothy continued on the second missionary journey. In Thessalonica, Paul met in the synagogue for three weeks sharing the gospel. Some Jews and Greeks believed, while some Jews gathered a mob to oppose Paul. The believers sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. Paul later traveled to Athens where he was invited to speak at Mars Hill. Tell the story – this week’s passage is Acts 17:16-34 [Have someone tell the story.] Rebuild the story [Group members tell the story together based on what they remember.] Read the story out loud [Read the scripture passage to see if anything was added or omitted.] Discuss these questions:

1. What do we learn about God from this passage? [God is the Giver of life; God is the Creator of all; God’s ways are not our ways; God is the ultimate Judge; God gives us a hunger for Him; God calls us to use our existing relationships as bridges for sharing the gospel with others; God transforms the lives of people; God chooses to use us as instruments for His glory; God is the same yesterday, today, and forever; God gives us both courage and discernment as we share; God invites us to join Him in His work; etc.]

2. What do we learn about Man/Us from this passage? [I can be easily deceived by the world; I must repent of sin in order to effectively follow Jesus; I am ignorant without the truth of God’s Word; I can be prone to religion and busyness; I am an idol factory producing things to worship other than God; I try to fill my God-shaped void with “something new”; I cannot control how someone will respond to the gospel; I expect lost people to act like saved people; I must live by faith as I follow Jesus; etc.]

3. What is God saying to you specifically through this passage as it pertains to your life, marriage, family, and work? 4. What is God leading you to do? Other Q uestions specific to this passage:

1. Acts 17:17 says that Paul was engaging people in gospel conversations every day in the market place. Who is God calling you to engage in a gospel conversation? 2. When thinking about the people you personally disciple, what “idol” do they worship? Assign next week’s passage – Acts 18:1-11 [Ask someone to tell the story next week.] Close in Prayer

Sent: Week 26 – Leadership Coaching The purpose of this page is to help you sharpen your skills as a Grow Group Leader. Each week, we will include concepts, challenges, and resources designed to assist you as you lead and shepherd your Grow Group and grow as a disciple yourself.

Leading [learn to facilitate your group more effectively] Prepare well. Pray and know your material. Facilitate, don’t teach - facilitation cultivates discussion; teaching disperses information. Don’t feel like you have to know all the answers. We are human, and it’s okay for your group to see that you are limited. Don’t talk more than the rest of the group. Ask questions to generate discussion. Ask people to explain their answers and go into depth. Allow multiple people to respond, even if the first person gets the “right” answer. Do your best not to interrupt.

Shepherding [know the sheep, feed the sheep, lead the sheep, protect the sheep] During your Grow Group time this week, share a meaningful touch with each group member. That may be a warm handshake, a hug, or a hand on their shoulder as you pray. Discuss personal devotional time with your Grow Group members. Sign them up to receive the daily One Day devotional e-mail from Pastor Ed.

Developing [grow as a disciple yourself] Sin distresses God and should distress us as well. It will be painful when we mourn and face our own sin. Sometimes, we can get so caught up in the pain, that we have a hard time accepting God’s forgiveness. In Luke 7:36-50, we see that when the woman takes her sin to the feet of Jesus, He comforts her by forgiving her many sins. Then He tells her to go in peace. The same is true for us. To live the unstoppable life, we have to recognize our sin, confess it to the Lord and accept His forgiveness. Once God has forgiven our sin, we should forgive ourselves as well and go in peace. In the same way, we are to forgive others. Memorize Colossians 3:13 § “Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.”
