Admissions Requirements for General Academic Teaching Institutions Under a law passed by the Texas Legislature in 2007, students must meet one or more of the following thresholds in order to be considered for admissions to any general academic teaching institution, including those with open enrollment policies: • Successfully complete the recommended or advanced high school program, or complete the portion of the program that was available to them; • Successfully complete a curriculum that is equivalent in content and rigor to the recommended or advanced high school program at a high school that is exempt from offering such programs; • Satisfy the ACT’s College Readiness Benchmarks on the ACT assessment; or • Earn a score of at least 1500 out of 2400 on the SAT assessment. General Academic Teaching Institutions include member institutions in the Texas A&M University, Texas State University, Texas Tech University, University of Houston, University of North Texas, and The University of Texas systems, among others. For a complete list of General Academic Teaching Institutions in Texas, see Texas Education Code §61.003 or http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us/ Docs/ED/htm/ED.61.htm (Universities). This policy does not apply to students entering a community or junior college.

The Top 10 Percent Law Under a law passed by the Texas Legislature in 1997, students who are in the top 10 percent of their graduating class are eligible for automatic admission to any public university in Texas.* To be eligible for automatic admission, a student must: • Graduate in the top 10 percent of his or her class at a public or private high school in Texas; or • Graduate in the top 10 percent of his or her class from a high school operated by the U.S. Department of Defense and be a Texas resident or eligible to pay resident tuition. • Satisfy one or more of the thresholds for admission outlined above. The student must also: • Enroll in college no more than two years after graduating from high school; and • Submit an application to a Texas public university for admission before the deadlines). Students admitted through this route may still be required to provide SAT or ACT scores, although these scores are not used for admissions purposes. Students must also take the THEA test, unless exempted from the test requirement. Check with the admissions office regarding THEA, SAT and ACT requirements. After a student is admitted, the university may review the student’s high school records to determine if the student is prepared for college-level work. A student who needs additional preparation may be required to take a developmental, of college. Admission to a university does not guarantee acceptance into a particular college of study or department. *In 2009, the Texas Legislature authorized The University of Texas at Austin to put a limit on how many students they admit under the Top Ten Law. Beginning with admissions for the 2011-2012 academic year, UT-Austin is not required to 75 percent of enrollment capacity.
