Scope

Alamance Community College Advanced Applied Technology Center Architectural/Engineering The Alamance Community College (ACC) Board of Trustees (BOT), 1247 Jimmie Kerr Road, Graham (Alamance County), NC 27253 seeks a qualified firm to design schematic drawings and architectural documents for the construction of an Advanced Applied Technology Center (AATC) [NCCCS Project No. 1738]. The BOT seeks to construct a state-of-the-art technical learning and training center of approximately 45,000 GSF that prepares students for careers in highly skilled fields. This will enable each of the instructional programs to approximately double the existing space in which instruction is currently delivered. An “Advanced Planning Study” [SCO ID#: 07-7353-01A], resulting in a well-defined project scope, was completed in October 2009. The primary purpose of this project is to provide additional space for programs in ACC’s Automotive Systems Technology; Welding Technology; Computer-Integrated Machining Technology; Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Technology; and, Carpentry if space permits. A secondary purpose is to examine options for uses of space vacated by the relocation of programs as a result of the construction of the AATC. The construction of the AATC will provide specialized lab and classroom space and accompanying storage for instructional equipment, supplies and materials utilized in the learning experience. There is an expectation that the building will be designed to maximize the student learning experience, and that it will complement the existing facilities on campus. In terms of the student learning experience, the programs to be offered in the AATC have experienced growing student demand even during the recent recessionary period. It is also true that the employers in Alamance County look to ACC to provide graduates skilled in the “trades” occupations that this building will serve. Therefore, the facility should be designed and built as a place where students are prepared and graduates are qualified to enter into the jobs that are locally available, and configured in such a way as to attract new students into careers that utilize state-of-theart diagnostic and manufacturing equipment and machinery. The project has been registered with USGBC and has a goal of LEED Silver certification, which will build upon the requirements of G.S. 143-153.37. As such, the AATC should be designed with sustainability in mind. The Board of Trustees’ goals are to make the facility energy efficient so as to effectively manage both operational and maintenance costs.

With respect to the availability of funds, the County of Alamance approved a bond referendum of $15 million in 2012. In September 2014, the Alamance County Board of County Commissioners authorized the issuance of General Obligation Bonds up to $15 million. There are no additional funds available at this time with which to complete the project. As such, the expectation is that the project will be completed within the funds available.
