By ANN SCHWARTZ, Aitkin County Habitat for Humanity

Christy Rian and her four daughters are settled now in a neat rental home. But their

lives haven’t always been easy, as she fled domestic violence and the Middle Eastern

culture to start over in Aitkin. They were selected as the Partner Family for the Aitkin County Habitat for Habitat home to be built in Aitkin this year. Their home will be located at 210 Minnesota Avenue, which is Hwy. 169 across from Aitkin Health Services. Building will start as soon as weather permits. The three oldest girls: Aiesha Alarab, 14; Aya, 13 and Sara, 9, were all born in the country of Jordan. Jannah, 4, was born in the United States. Christy was born in Aitkin and grew up in Brainerd and the Twin Cities. “When I was 16, I left home and moved to the Middle East. The culture was really different there. I wasn’t able to work or anything.” They came back to the United States for a time and Jannah was born. In February

of 2016, she split with her husband and struck out alone with the girls. “I had to start from scratch. We were in Illinois and I had to call police and go to courthouse and then a women’s shelter for about a week. We didn’t know anybody there to help us. My sister’s boyfriend and his mom [came] get us and bring us back to the Aitkin area. We lived with my mom for a while.” She worked with the Aitkin Workforce Center to get certified as a nursing assistant and has worked at Aitkin Health Services ever since. “It was my first real job. I was a stayat-home mom for many years. People wonder how I can do that kind of work, but I love it. I like helping people.” She will live right across the street from her job when Continued on Page 5

Nisswa native serves on Navy’s newest most-advanced attack submarine sonar technician (submarine) serving aboard the Pearl Harbor-based submarine, one of 56 fast attack submarines in the U.S. Navy. A Navy sonar technician (submarine) is responsible for operating the sonar systems to detect underwater contacts and help navigate the ship. “Growing up, I learned no matter what the task is, if you finish it correctly you don’t have to redo the job,” said Roeder. Jobs are highly varied aboard the submarine, acPetty Officer 3rd Class Cadel cording to Navy officials. Their primary tactical advantage is stealth, operating undetected under the sea for long periods of time. “Our submarine teams are small, elite, and rely heavily on extraordinary individual performance,” said Rear Adm. Daryl L. Caudle, commander, Submarine Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet. “It is no surprise that our sailors continue to set the standard for excellence, and the country continues to be well served by their service and sacrifice. I couldn’t be more proud to lead this professional fighting force.” According to Navy officials, because of the demanding environment aboard submarines, personnel are accepted only after rigorous testing and observation. Submariners are some of the most highly trained and skilled people in the Navy. Regardless of their specialty, everyone has to learn how everything on the ship works and how to respond in emergencies to become “qualified

in submarines” and earn the right to wear the coveted gold or silver dolphins on their uniform. Roeder also has military ties with family members

who have previously served and is honored to carry on the family tradition. “My brother was in the Army, my father in the National Guard, and my grand-

dad was in the Army Air Corps,” said Roeder. “All three of them had influence on my decision to join the military. I feel like it is a family tradition to serve.”

Sulfate bill passes both bodies The House and the Senate both have approved a bill Rep. Dale Lueck, R-Aitkin, authored to update the state’s system of establishing water quality standards related to sulfates. The House approved the bill (H.F. 3280) last week and the Senate followed suit Monday. In between, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency said it is withdrawing its sulfate standard from the rulemaking process. Lueck said the MPCA’s announcement clears the way for the bill he authored to gain further traction. A press release the MPCA issued Thursday indicated, in part, that Commissioner John Linc Stine said “We look forward to working with legislators

over the next three weeks to determine an alternative path forward.” It is a sentiment Lueck said he welcomes. “The basic premise of my legislation is to replace the obsolete standard with a reasonable, enforceable rule based on sound science and with a broad base of collaboration,” Lueck said. “That certainly includes input from the MPCA and the DNR at the state level, along with tribal governments and experts from the public sector. We share common ground in that we all want to protect our environment, it is the details of how best to accomplish our goals that need to be resolved.” Lueck reiterated a point he made on the House floor last week, that the 45-year-old

numeric sulfate standard, if applied today, would create millions of dollars in unwarranted costs to rural municipal waste water treatment plants across Minnesota. “One thing I want to caution against is for people to assume this ends the discussion on wild rice,” Lueck said. “Nothing could be further from the truth. This puts us in position to collaborate on how best to effectively protect, enhance and restore natural wild rice within Minnesota.” Lueck said that, since the House and Senate versions of the bill are slightly varied, a decision on whether to accept the Senate version or go to a conference committee to reconcile differences between the two bodies is pending.

reader ribbets In regards to big brothers watching First of all, I liked it when my big brothers watched over me. The only time I didn’t was because I was doing stuff I was not suppose to be doing. The cameras in the park are a must these days. It will actually save money for the city. Just one incident could pay for the cost of the cameras in the park for what lawyer fees could cost the city. Think of child abduction, sex trafficking and drug dealings going on within the park. These cameras could help the police solve these cases way faster. No cameras makes it a free for all for crime!! My opinion of the new police cars with the ghosted-logos looks very classy! They are not

bright and loud colors, but again when there is an illegal things happening sometimes its better for the police to be loud and bright. Again, this make me feel safe, because I want them to hide to catch the criminals. Same thing with deer hunters, they are very quite in the woods, if they are loud they wouldn’t every see a deer. Same thing with the police and the criminals. When people move into a community do they look at how good the condition of the streets are or the safety / crime rate of the neighborhood they are moving to? We as the community need to support our police department and the city council. Calling the

leadership incompetent is a very obvious personal attack, which honestly makes me question innocence, when these attacks are implied so strongly. These things simply cause division in a community. This is sad to see and I hope people will stand up for our community and think for themselves and ask questions. Again, I love our little town and dislike seeing these attacks on our community workers. They need community support even when we may think they aren’t doing it our way. They are doing their job, we need to respect and support them. Karin Nelson, Deerwood

23 and Me … and Facebook Facebook recently informed 87 million users that Cambridge Analytica, a political consulting firm, harvested their confidential information using it to create targeted ads that may have influenced the outcome 2016 presidential election. Many users were shocked to learn that Cambridge had access to their data. Now, Congress is demanding reforms from Facebook and other social media sites. Our lawmakers want social networks to simplify privacy terms and conditions. But Facebook isn’t the only firm that puts users’ privacy at risk. Some genetic testing companies like Invitae, 23andMe, and AncestryDNA do too -- and the consequences of irresponsibly sharing DNA data are far more serious than a social media data breach. Lawmakers and regulators ought to demand these genetic testing companies clearly inform consumers whether, and how, their data will be shared. Every year, millions of people undergo genetic testing to help predict health problems or just discover their heritage. Doctors send patients’ blood or saliva samples to lab testing companies like Invitae. Millions of people have bought DNA testing kits from companies like 23AndMe and AncestryDNA and submitted their samples through the mail. After sequencing the DNA samples, genetic testing

firms often sell or share the genetic information to third parties. For instance, 23andMe agreed to share its data with biopharmaceutical firm Genentech in exchange for as much as $60 million. Testing firms seek users’ permission to share the data. But they gloss over the risks. As a result, consumers sign away their rights with little comprehension of the privacy violations and discrimination that could ensue. Take Invitae. Its privacy policy states that it may use patients’ “de-identified” data for “general research purposes” which may include “research collaborations with third parties” or “commercial collaborations with private companies.” The problem is that the d a t a i s n ’t p e r m a n e n t l y “de-identified.” It can easily be tied back to specific people. Just ask Harvard Medical School Professor Latanya Sweeney. She recently identified the names of more than 40 percent of participants in a supposedly anonymous DNA study. Sweeney cross-referenced participants’ provided zip codes, birthdays, and genders with public records like voter rolls. She then was able to match people up to their DNA. Your DNA contains a wealth of sensitive medical information. Imagine what employers might do if they got access to people’s DNA. They easily could exploit this

information to discriminate against prospective hires. If you’re worried about someone stealing your social security number, imagine identity theft on the genetic level. Genetic privacy is a human right. To protect consumers from such abuses, the U.S. government should increase regulation of genetic testing companies to protect people. European policymakers have already done so. In late May, the European Union’s online privacy legislation -known as the General Data Protection Regulation -- will go into effect. Among other provisions, the new law will require genetic testing companies to delete personal information if users request it. Some DNA testing companies aren’t waiting for regulators to act. They’re already voluntarily promising to not share any genetic samples, leaving the important privacy decisions in patients’ hands where they belong.” Social media platforms like Facebook are failing to secure users’ personal information. Most genetic testing companies are failing too. It’s time for lawmakers and regulators to impose tougher consumer protections so that we don’t have a Facebook-like crisis involving people’s most sensitive genetic information. Peter J. Pitts, a former FDA Associate Commissioner, is president of the Center for Medicine in the Public Interest.

The Nature of Things’ features printmaker’s work at Ripple River Gallery

“The Nature of Things,” a montage of reduction relief prints by artist Eric A. Johnson.

Printmaker Eric A. Johnson finds inspiration for his work in many places—music, positive and negative life experiences and memories and even sometimes news events. “The Nature of Things,” his exhibit at Ripple River Gallery near Bay Lake, reflects that wide range of imagery. Johnson’s exhibit, “The Nature of Things,” opens Wednesday, May 2 and will continue through June 3. A reception to meet the artist is set for Friday, May 18 from 5 to 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend, enjoy refreshments and learn about

the printmaking process. Since his childhood on a farm in eastern North Dakota, Eric Johnson has been driven by the desire to capture the world around him— the vast prairies, sparse but towering tree lines, pastures full of livestock. “The main focus in my work, throughout my career, has been conceptualizing my personal experience into pieces that the viewer can relate to, regardless of their background or experience with the images presented,” Johnson said. He added that the goal of his work has been “to provide an escape into a feeling of

wonder and miracle from a world that is often full of misery, negative happenstance, and mundane tasks.” The original prints included in “The Nature of Things” represent a span of about five years for Johnson. “In some cases, I have used sketches or photographs as a starting point for the images, in others I have explored “automatism” to draw directly onto the blocks, and in others have started with no drawing at all and just started printing. Much of it comes from my exploration of different ways of working with the reduction relief print process,” he said. Johnson uses a printmaking technique developed by Pablo Picasso in the 1950s that uses one carved block to create a multicolored print instead of using one block for each color. A prolific artist, Johnson

has created well over 180 prints and exhibited in numerous regional and national exhibitions. He says he likes to switch back and forth between abstraction and realism “to keep myself interested.” Johnson’s unique use of color has been described as “bright and emotionally expressive.” His lines are said to have the ability to render buildings and streets into more organic forms. Johnson earned his degree in art at North Dakota State University and continued his studies at the University of North Dakota’s Master of

Fine Arts program. He has served as coordinator for the North Dakota Governor’s School’s Visual Arts program and is a current member of Fargo-Moorhead Visual Artists. Currently he is an adjunct instructor of art at Minnesota State Community and Technical Collage (Detroit Lakes, Moorhead and Wadena) and Mayville State University, Mayville, ND. Johnson, who lives near Fargo, ND, continues to create and exhibit new work and plans to establish his own printmaking studio (Big Oak Press) near the home he

shares with his wife, Dera, and three children. Ripple River Gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday; and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays. The gallery is located five miles south of Deerwood on Highway 6, then 3 miles east of Ruttger’s Bay Lake Lodge on County Road 14 to Partridge Avenue; or south of Aitkin on Highway 169 to Bennettville, then 3.2 miles west on County Road 11 to Partridge Avenue.
