The Passover Bible Passage: Exodus 5-12 Memory Verse: 4 “But I have been the LORD your God ever since you came out of Egypt. You shall acknowledge no God but me, no Savior except me. Hosea 13:4 Bottom Line: Because nothing is too hard for God, I can believe that I am His and that heaven is my home. Big Picture Question: Is there anything God cannot do? God can do all things according to His character. Christ Connection: By His grace, God spared the Israelites from judgment by requiring the blood of a lamb. Jesus is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. His death was the ultimate sacrifice, and those who believe in Christ are under His saving blood and will be passed over in the final judgment. 10 Minutes SOCIAL: SETTING THE TONE OF THE EXPERIENCE There You Are!

What You Need: large blanket or sheet What You Do: Form 2 teams of kids.  If your kids do not know each other well, review names before playing.  Instruct players to sit with their team, several feet away from the other team.  Choose 2 volunteers to hold a blanket between the 2 teams so players cannot see the other team.  For each round, one player from each team will sit behind the blanket.  Count down from 3, then the volunteers drop the blanket.  The first player to shout out the name of the other player wins the round.  Award a point for each correct identification.  Play multiple rounds as time allows.  You can also play as categories- Ask kids to tell each other a favorite food, game, sport, person at the beginning.  When the blanket drops they have to say the other person’s favorite of the day. What You Say ”It is so much fun to get to know our friends in a different way when we are in small group. In our stories we will talk about someone who wanted to be remembered and went through some really tough stuff to live out God’s plan. Let’s get ready for large group so we can see what happens.”

10 Minutes Worship: CELEBRATING WHAT GOD IS DOING SONGS, OFFERING AND PRAYER

15 Minutes LARGE GROUP: COMMUNICATING GOD’S TRUTH IN ENGAGING WAYS Today’s Passage- Exodus 5-12 Can you imagine everywhere you go, all you see is frogs? Why do you think God sent plagues to Egypt? What did the plagues teach the Egyptians and the Israelites? [Allow kids to respond.] God showed that He is the one true God. You see, the Egyptians worshiped false gods. They had a false sun god, a false river god, a false god for this, and a false god for that. Pharaoh and his magicians thought their false gods were just as powerful as the Israelites’ God, but the plagues showed the Egyptians that the Lord is the one true God. God used the plagues to judge Pharaoh and the Egyptians for their sin of worshiping false gods. God also wanted to confirm to the Israelites that He is the one true God. The land of Goshen—the area of Egypt were the Israelites lived—did not experience most of the plagues. For three days, the Egyptians lived in total darkness. But the Israelites had light where they lived. God showed His power to the Israelites. The most severe plague was the tenth plague: death of the firstborn. God warned Moses about what would happen, and He instructed the Israelites about how to get ready. The Israelites fixed a meal with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. They marked their doorways with the blood of a lamb. They were dressed and ready to go. The Gospel Project Unit 4 Session 5- Edited by Parkway Church

When the Lord passed through Egypt, the firstborn in every house died except for the houses marked by blood. God passed over them, and then Pharaoh let the people go. God delivered His people and proved that He is the one true God. CONTEXT God had a plan to rescue the people of Israel from slavery in Egypt. He chose and called Moses for the task and allowed Moses’ brother, Aaron, to help him. Moses and Aaron faced a huge obstacle in leading the Israelites out of Egypt, and his name was Pharaoh. Pharaoh did not recognize the Lord’s authority: “Who is the LORD that I should obey him by letting Israel go?” (Ex. 5:2) Pharaoh hardened his heart against the Lord, but all of this fit into God’s plan to reveal to Pharaoh—and all of Egypt—who He is. First, God sent a series of plagues that wrecked Egypt. The plagues were acts of judgment designed to show the Egyptians who God is—and the Egyptians learned their lesson. Read Exodus 8:19; 9:20,27; and 10:7. The tenth plague was the most severe and had the greatest impact on the Egyptian people. God told Moses that around midnight, every firstborn male in Egypt would die. But God gave specific instructions to the Israelites. They were to slaughter a lamb or goat and put its blood on their doorposts. The blood on the doorpost would be a distinguishing mark. When God saw the blood, He “passed over” the house. The Israelite people were sinful, and they deserved death just as much as the Egyptians did. But God graciously provided a way out. By marking their doorposts with the blood of a lamb, they were spared from the judgment and death they deserved. The lamb was killed instead. The heart of the gospel is found in the story of the Passover: Jesus never sinned, but He was crucified for our sins. We deserve death, but He died instead. As you teach kids this week, highlight the Passover and help them look ahead to the true spotless lamb—Jesus, “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). TODAY’S TAKEAWAYS     

God used miracles or plagues to rescue of His people from Egypt. He didn’t bring the plagues to “hurt” people but to teach them that He is God. Pharaoh could have avoided all of the loss if he let God’s people go. BL: Because nothing is too hard for God, I can believe that I am His and that heaven is my home.. God sent Jesus to free us from sin. Like the blood on the doorposts protected God’s people, so the blood of Jesus protects all who believe in Him.

Give kids a chance to believe in Jesus for the first time. Remind them that God loves them so much that He sent Jesus to earth to pay for their sins. Lead them to pray as you pray. Pray that believers will submit their lives to the Holy Spirit, follow Jesus, and tell others about Him.

25 Minutes SMALL GROUPS : CREATING A SAFE PLACE TO CONNECT Discussion Questions:

1.

What was the first plague God sent to Egypt? (God turned the Nile to blood, Ex. 7:20-21) 2. A few times Pharaoh agreed to release the Israelites if God ended the plagues. Did Pharaoh keep his word? (No, he changed his mind each time God showed mercy; Ex. 8:15,31-32; 9:34-35) 3. What was the final plague and how did the Israelites avoid suffering under it? (the death of every firstborn; spreading lamb’s blood over their doorposts, Ex. 12:1213) 4. Why do you think Pharaoh refused to let the Israelites go? Help the kids understand that God was using Pharaoh to display His power over the world. Discuss the fact that Egypt worshiped many false gods, and the plagues demonstrated that the one true God had power and the false gods did not. 5. How does the Passover point forward to Jesus’ death? Guide kids to discuss that Jesus was identified as the Lamb of God. He died as a sacrifice so that we could be saved from sin. The Israelites sacrificed an unblemished lamb, and Jesus was without sin. Everyone who believes in Jesus will not be punished for sin; God’s judgment will “pass over” believers. 6. What are some ways God used the Israelites’ time in Egypt for His glory and their good? Guide kids to understand that, although Israel’s time as slaves was difficult and sad, God worked through it to show His power and rescue them. Remind the kids that as God’s people left Egypt, they took animals, clothing, and money from the Egyptians. Through their time in Egypt, Israel became a large and wealthy nation. 7. Why is Jesus called the Lamb of God? Help kids connect the story of the Passover to Jesus’ sacrifice to spare believers from God’s judgment against sin. (Option: Choose a volunteer to read John 1:29.) 8. Pharaoh asked, “Who is the LORD?” How would you answer this question? Invite kids to share based on what they’ve learned from the Bible. (Option: Choose a volunteer to read Ps. 18:2.) 9. God rescued the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. How are people slaves to sin? Guide kids to conclude that when sin is our master, we cannot resist it. Emphasize that Jesus frees us from the power of sin. (Option: Choose a volunteer to read Rom. 6:6.) Activity: Pretty Please What You Need: no supplies needed What You Do:  Invite the kids to stand in a line, shoulder to shoulder.  Choose one kid to be Pharaoh.  Her job is to stand at the front of the room and listen to requests made by other kids.  Each kid will have a turn to approach Pharaoh and say, “Pretty please, will you…” and end with a silly request.  Pharaoh must say, “no” without laughing or smiling.  IF they are successful, the next kid will take a turn.  If “pharaoh” smiles or laughs, allow another kid to take their place as Pharaoh o Suggestions for requests: o Let me cuddle a porcupine o Let me kiss the soap dispenser o Let me snooze through lunch o Let me sniff dirty socks. What You Say  ”Moses and Aaron made important requests to Pharaoh. In fact, it was more like a demand! Pharaoh was stubborn and refused to obey God. Because the Israelites had faith to obey God, He passed over them when it was time for the last plague. Each year they would celebrate and remember that God had delivered His people and proved that He is the One True God. Jesus crucifixion and resurrection have some important similarities to Passover. We celebrate Easter as we look back on what Jesus did so that God’s anger about our sin would The Gospel Project Unit 4 Session 5- Edited by Parkway Church
