“My job as Mayor is to get these things [initiatives] going and get out of the way.” Mayor Lane Curlee poses with a large collection of thank-you letters he has received as mayor.

T

his past year Tullahoma has welcomed several new businesses to town including Jimmy Johns, Kays Jewelers, Starbucks and Publix. There is also the recent renovation by Kroger and the expansion of L & H Distributing. Although it might seem as though these new businesses and upgrades have appeared overnight, the leaders of Tullahoma have been planning for growth and preparing the way all along. For over 17 years, Mayor Lane Curlee has had his eye on Tullahoma’s future. He grew up here. It’s where he raised his own family and where his new granddaughter lives. It’s safe to say when it comes to Tullahoma, Mayor Curlee is here for the long run. And as Tullahoma experiences unprecedented growth, it’s good to know there is a steady hand behind the wheel.

I want Tullahoma to be recognized as a world-class community in everything that we do. Engaging the Community Sustainable and integrated growth in a community does not happen on its own. A long-term vision coupled with a strategic plan of how to get there is essential. Addressing the issues that are important to the community is a key factor in improving the quality of life. “Every year, as Mayor, I introduce a new community initiative. Each of these initiatives is designed to move Tullahoma forward in many different ways,” Curlee says. “Then I do my best to get the community engaged and involved.” Hundreds of people continue to participate in past initiatives which include Go Green Tullahoma, Get Fit Tullahoma and the Arts Council. They also provide a means for people to work together on something they have an interest in and care about, which in the end, builds a stronger community. What do these initiatives have to do with growth? According to Mayor Curlee, a community that is growing, stretching and doing new things, exemplifies a vibrant and healthy community. It also makes it more attractive for investment. That, in turn, brings new ideas, new people, and new businesses to Tullahoma.

Quality Growth Every community has its strengths. In Tullahoma, aviation, technology, medical, and retail are pillars of the community. Tullahoma will continue to build on those strengths. The next community initiative is going to be to support entrepreneurs. “Each month I sign between 8 and 13 ‘Welcome to Tullahoma’ letters, welcoming and thanking people for investing in our community,” Curlee says. Tullahoma has a lot to be proud of, with gigabit fiber available to every home, a top ten school system in the state, an outstanding airport that was the airport of the year, and hundreds of acres of parks. “All that’s designed 16

THINK TULLAHOMA

2019

to grow in a quality way, not just for growth’s sake. A lot of our efforts of the past will be paying off, and we will have more quality development,” Curlee says.

The Next Generation of Leaders Mayor Curlee continues to plan for the future by reaching out to tomorrow’s leaders. Each year he visits every elementary school classroom in Tullahoma, that’s 75 classrooms, and talks to the students about kindness, respect, and what it takes to be the mayor. Then he lines them up to practice shaking hands and making eye contact. He also encourages them to speak to him when they see him around town. If they come up and say hello, he gives them an oversized mayor’s business card that has their name and an affirming message on the card such as “work hard, dream big or always do your best.” This instills the idea that they have a voice, their views are important, and that government leaders are approachable. Mayor Curlee smiles as he looks at the hundreds of thank you cards and letters displayed in his office and says, “I hope in some very small way, it makes a difference.” by trisha sandora

The Beechcraft Heritage Museum tells a story about those who dared to fly and the airplanes they loved. by trisha sandora

wo immaculate airplanes sparkle and shine beneath spotlights in the lobby of the Beechcraft Heritage Museum. One, a polished aluminum 1946 Bonanza with Tennessee Red trim, and the other, a bright red G17S Staggerwing, both made by the revered Beech Aircraft Company. The show-stopping display beckons wide-eyed admirers to come closer and take a peek inside the windows to see the luxury interiors and meticulously restored panels.

Staggerwing 26

THINK TULLAHOMA

2019

The iconic Beechcraft Staggerwing debuted in 1932 during the depths of the Depression. It was named for the distinctive negative stagger of the wings—the lower wing is farther forward than the upper wing, opposite the standard biplane configuration. It was sleek and powerful with a cruise speed in excess of 200 mph which made it popular with air racers. The Staggerwing was the Cadillac of the sky. Many of the pilots who flew them had a steadfast affinity for the aircraft. The Staggerwing Club was founded in 1963, and ten years later the group established the Staggerwing Museum Foundation.

Photos by Mark Nankivil, courtesy of Beechcraft Heritage Museum

A Place for Classic Airplanes As the years passed, the antique aircraft museum began to include other Beechcraft models, and in 2007 the Staggerwing Museum became the Beechcraft Heritage Museum. The museum’s strategic location next to the Tullahoma airport is no coincidence. John & Charlotte Parish donated the land where the museum is situated. Charlotte’s family had a dairy farm near the airport, and when the opportunity presented itself, John and Charlotte purchased a piece of property that connected the farm to the airport. John, a visionary, realized early on that an agreement between the airport and the family would be a significant asset for an airplane museum, and he was right. What started with a humble log cabin now includes 80,000 square feet under roof with multiple hangars housing thirty-seven airplanes including the first Staggerwing ever made, Serial Number 1.

And though many of these planes will never taxi the runway again, they have all been restored to their former glory, a tribute to the Beechcraft legacy. “You don’t have to be an aviation person to appreciate this museum,” Executive Vice President Charles Parish says. People of all ages will find something that interests them, whether it’s learning about how planes are built and how they fly, or seeing the hand-drawn blueprints, beautiful paintings and photographs on the walls.

Women in Aviation “Our museum is very connected to strong women in aviation,” Parish says. Olive Ann Beech, referred to as the “First Lady of Aviation,” earned more awards, honorary appointments, and special citations than any woman in aviation history. As co-founder, president, and chairwoman of Beech Aircraft Company, she successfully took the corporate business to the next level after the passing of her husband, Walter Beech. Fearless pilot Louise Thaden set more records than Amelia Earhart, including the highest altitude, the farthest distance, and the fastest speed. She raced against men in the 20s and 30s in high profile aviation races. In the 1936 Bendix Air Race, she set a new world record of 14 hours, 55 minutes from New York City to Los Angeles. Her pilot’s license, signed by Orville Wright, is displayed in the museum along with her 1936 Bendix trophy and her 1929 Women’s Air Derby trophy.

It’s A Beech Party Every year Beechcraft Heritage Museum hosts a fly in that draws hundreds of Beechcraft enthusiasts from around the world. In 2018 more than 650 people attended the event. The annual convention includes workshops, maintenance seminars, social events, and Beech aircraft from near and far.

Inspiring the Next Generation Twice a year, Beechcraft hosts the Scot Perry Air Academy. Students ages 10-16 are taught the principals of flight by constructing a radio control model airplane. The three-day youth camp promotes interest in science, mathematics and of course, aviation. One more thing, if you are looking for a unique gift for that airplane loving person in your life, the Beechcraft Gift Shop is worth a special trip. Beechcraft Heritage Museum is located at 570 Old Shelbyville Hwy. in Tullahoma. It is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Admission to the museum is $10 for adults, $5 for children 12-17 and senior citizens 65 and over, and those with a military ID. Ages 11 and under may visit the museum for free. The Space Institute, so named because of its emphasis on aerospace and aeronautical studies in the early days of space exploration, was initially established for the educational needs of the engineers and scientists of the Air Force and the Arnold Research Organization.

Established in 1964 as part of The University of Tennessee, UTSI occupies a 365-acre wooded campus beside Woods Reservoir. hether it’s hand-dipping chocolate covered strawberries, covering apples in white chocolate, or topping fresh pecans with caramel and dark chocolate—for Ginny and Randy Wilson, it’s all in a day’s work at Water’s Edge Chocolate. The couple started the business in their home back in 2012. “Our dream from the beginning was to be able to work together as a family,” Ginny says. Six years later, that dream has come true. At their retail store on Anderson Street in Tullahoma, Randy and Ginny work alongside each other, with the help of four employees, while Randy’s mother cares for their two small children in an adjoining room. Through large glass panes in the entryway, visitors can see into the kitchen and watch the magic happen before their eyes—a mouth-watering preview of the

chocolate treasures that wait in the next room. Shelves filled with chocolate covered pretzels, popcorn, almonds, and even Oreos line the walls in the cozy store. There is dark chocolate, milk chocolate, and white chocolate. One wall displays gift baskets overflowing with chocolate treats. And then there is the ice cream. “We just added ice cream this summer. We worked with a creamery in Kentucky for over a year on our recipes,” Ginny says. Creating their ice cream recipes was time well spent, and when you have finally made the tough decision of what flavor to get, then comes the question, “one or two scoops?” Nothing says, “I love you” like chocolate. Christmas and Valentine’s Day are the busiest times of the year for Water’s Edge Chocolate. The kitchen buzzes with activity as festive gifts of chocolate are created for that someone special. Businesses can even get their logo in chocolate, a tasteful way to say thanks to customers and clients. For Ginny, a Florida native, Tullahoma is a good place to be. “It’s such a great change of pace from where I’m from. It’s nice being in a small town and getting to know everybody. Tullahoma has really welcomed us as a family into the community.” Water’s Edge Chocolate is a happy place, and the chocolate delicacies are all created with a purpose. “One of the main reasons I got into this was because I love seeing people smile,” Ginny says. “I love being part of their celebration.” Whether it’s melting chocolate, dipping bar items, decorating their creations with drizzle and piping, or serving up ice cream, the Wilson family is giving the community of Tullahoma some love—through chocolate.

Our dream from the beginning was to be able to work together as a family.

designed & built in tullahoma One of the largest high-speed wind tunnels in academia is ready to ignite intellectual and economic fire power across the state. Contributing authors: Gina Stafford & David Goddard.

Thanks to a generous investment by the State of Tennessee in 2016, the University of Tennessee Space Institute is poised to lead the advancement of aerospace and defense research in the Tennessee Valley region. "The Aerospace & Defense sector is critically important to Tennessee—it's the fourth-largest driver in Tennessee's economy," noted Dr. John Schmisseur in a recent interview. "UTSI is gearing up to support that with new discoveries and innovative technologies that will ensure aerospace and defense flourishes in our region." Schmisseur is the H.H. Arnold Chair and B.H. Goethert Professor in aerospace engineering at the University of Tennessee. After leaving the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory four years ago, where he ran the fundamental science research program in hypersonics, he brought a new vision for the "blank slate" of opportunity he found at UTSI. Constructing a brand-new hypersonic wind tunnel is only the first phase. The new Mach 4 tunnel is the first step in creating the state-of-the-art TALon complex (Tennessee Aerothermodynamics Laboratory). And thanks to a recent Air Force award, funding is in place for his group to develop and build a new Mach 7 tunnel in the laboratory over the next two years.

40

THINK TULLAHOMA

2019

"We want to use hypersonic research to drive new accomplishments and growth from an industrial and economic standpoint here at home," Schmisseur says, "by making a large, economically efficient supersonic wind tunnel readily available to support regional research, we hope to be a catalyst for the growth of R&D oriented industry within this area." Within the next year, Schmisseur's hope is that experiments at the Space Institute will cross the road to Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC). Also known as Arnold Air Force Base, AEDC is about 15 minutes down the road from UTSI. Schmisseur calls AEDC the crown jewel and epicenter of Air Force hypersonics research, where engineers operate more than 55 aerodynamic and propulsion wind tunnels, rocket and turbine engine test cells, ballistic ranges, sled tracks, centrifuges, and other specialized units. "We wanted to do something that readily supports AEDC, and here we've set up TALon right outside the gate." The size of the tunnel complements what's at AEDC, Schmisseur says, but the fundamental research focus of the laboratory provides a new dimension to partner with the Test & Evaluation mission at AEDC. In addition to $1 million from the State of Tennessee to develop the laboratory, the UTSI hypersonics team has generated almost $15 million in external research support since the group began in 2014. "These investments are bolstering local research capabilities and helping recruit outstanding new technical talent to the area," added Schmisseur. "Dr. Phil Kreth, a new tenure-track assistant professor, and Dr. Mark Gragston, a new research assistant professor, are two examples of the world-class talent we have been able to recruit." Kreth, a Florida State graduate, specializes in supersonic experiments and high-speed flow control. His developing ballistic research initiative at UTSI promises to expand the impact of regional research on Aerospace & Defense in Tennessee. Gragston, a recent graduate of UT Knoxville, brings significant capabilities in laser-based diagnostics to the team and will be leading the utilization of a new $740k

laser awarded to UTSI by the Office of Naval Research. So just how big is one of academia's largest wind tunnels? The test section measures in at 24 inches by 24 inches, making it 60 percent of the size of AEDC's Mach 1.5 to Mach 5.5 facility. When the tunnel is operated, air flows due to a vacuum created in a large tank outside the building. The 105-foot tube at the opposite end holds pressurized air that rushes through the nozzle and test area when a diaphragm is ruptured. "Most universities with an aerospace program have a supersonic wind tunnel, and they're all about this big," Schmisseur says, his hands a few inches apart. The size of the new wind tunnel provides an elegant analogy for UTSI's hypersonics program: big things are happening here in Tullahoma. left: kegs of product stand at the ready in L&H’s vast storage facilities. right: Robert and Bob Hennigan stand inside their newly completed warehouse.

From Humble Beginnings In 1958, a young family moved from Alabama to Tullahoma, Tennessee with a thousand dollars borrowed cash and a dream of starting their own business. In a warehouse about the size of a two-car garage, Leroy and Mary Elizabeth Hennigan opened L & H Distributing and became the Anheuser-Busch wholesaler in Tullahoma. They started with one delivery truck and two products, Budweiser and Michelob beer—a snapshot of simpler times. Their two sons later joined the company, Bob in 1975, and Al in 1979. Al retired several years ago, and today, Bob’s son, Robert, and his daughter, Caroline, are continuing the legacy of L & H Distributing as vice presidents of the company. Today, the items sold through L & H Distributing include

46

over 400 brands. While they’ve moved from their original building, L & H has been operating out of its current location since 1980. However, these days, the size of the facility stretches out to almost 100,000 square feet.

Room to Grow The new expansion not only brings some much-needed space— 35,000 square feet to be exact—it will have far-reaching benefits in the future as well. In addition to large evaporators and refrigeration equipment, the new warehouse also includes three new loading docks to receive product. “It is a big deal for us, and for our employees. It’s going to help us become a more efficient operation,” Bob says. “We have so many SKUs (Stock Keeping Units)—

everything takes up floor space. The new warehouse will allow us a lot of efficiency in receiving and storing product. It will also allow us to expand the product lines.” Preserving the quality of the products is also an important aspect of L & H’s business as well as a key driver for the expansion. “All our products are stored in a Controlled Environment Warehouse (CEW). Everything is kept at a constant temperature relative to the current month’s average dew point,” Bob explains. “Maintaining the ideal warehouse environment for our products not only upholds the integrity of the packaging, but it keeps our products fresh. At the end of the day, commitment to quality is at the forefront of everything we do.” The recent expansion of L & H Distributing is a vote of confidence for Tullahoma and the surrounding communities. “We made a decision about it three years ago.

We have confidence in the local economy. We think things look good for the future,” Bob comments. And as for new jobs, “We are always looking to hire additional people and to grow our business,” Robert adds. L & H Distributing is the story of a family that has worked together to carry on a dream. “Not a whole lot of businesses make it for 60 years—we’ve been blessed,” Bob says with a smile. And there is no question that Leroy and Mary Elizabeth Hennigan would be proud.

The Right Place at the Right Time For this Tullahoma native, the decision to come back home was perfect timing. by trisha sandora

S

ometimes the reasons for coming back home aren’t always that clear. For Kari Clarey, it took some time before she knew she was right where she needed to be.

Thankfully Kari and Josh were there to help keep the business running smoothly. At that point, they both knew without a doubt the reason they had come back to Tullahoma.

Kari was born and raised in Tullahoma. And like other teenagers who grow up in a small town, she couldn’t wait to leave. After spending four years in Knoxville at UT, she moved to Charlotte, NC for an internship. “I liked the city life. I lived downtown and worked on the 47th floor of the building. My friends were living in other big cities,” Kari says.

Not every couple could work together day-to-day, but that has never been a problem for Kari and Josh. “We just really work well together,” Kari says.

Kari met her husband Josh while they were both working for the accounting firm Ernst & Young in Charlotte. Working long hours and living the fast-paced lifestyle of a Big 4 Accounting firm soon had the couple considering other options. Moving back to Tullahoma to work in the family business started to sound better every day.

The new growth in Tullahoma also adds a whole new dimension to this small town. “It took a little while to get adjusted, but now we love it. I’m excited to have Publix, and we’re getting a lot of cute boutiques around here,” Kari says. “I’ve been back four years now, but I’m still noticing things that I didn’t notice before.”

The family business is the accounting firm Housholder Artman, PLLC which Kari’s grandfather started in 1955. So it was a natural fit for Kari and Josh to join the firm.

These days, life in Tullahoma seems to suit the Clarey family well. They are now a family of three with the recent addition of their daughter Charlotte. “My parents live a mile and a half down the road from us. They keep Charlotte during the week. We drop her off on the way to work and pick her up on the way home,” Kari says. “It’s a blessing.”

After they had been back about a year, Kari still questioned their decision to move back to Tullahoma. However, her uncertainty was soon put to rest when Kari’s dad had to stop working at the firm due to health issues.

So what’s a fun night out for Josh and Kari? “We do a lot of things with friends. Once a month on a Friday night we have dinner and play cards—that’s an ideal night.” Kari says.

Message From the 2019 Board President Donna Bradford I have been a Coffee County resident almost all of my life. I moved to Tullahoma in 2000. The past 19 years has brought many changes to our landscape however; the people remain the same. This is what makes Tullahoma a great place to live, raise families and work. In order to have a strong economic environment, you must have a strong community. We are truly blessed in our community to have leaders, business owners, educators and citizens who realize that we all share in the responsibility of creating economic success and happiness within our community. As the 2019 Chamber President, I am honored to work alongside our dedicated Board who share the same vision, business growth and a healthy community.

I’m enthusiastic about growing with Tullahoma and excited to serve as the 2019 Ambassador President for the Tullahoma Area Chamber of Commerce. Through the program, I have developed a more out-going personality and made many wonderful friends. In turn, those friendships have turned into lasting personal and professional relationships. The Tullahoma Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors are an amazing group of business members from the community, and I have learned much from them. Their incredible and diverse personalities are commendable. I have been fortunate to be able to volunteer with different events throughout my years as an Ambassador, and I’m excited to serve this wonderful community and see what is in store for Tullahoma in 2019. The Tullahoma Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassador program is a great way to become active in the community and to network with professionals. It has helped me within my position to gain customers who can trust me and my profession. It has been a true asset to me! As Steve Jobs once said, “Great things in business are never done by one person. They’re done by a team of people” and that is exactly what, WE, the Tullahoma Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors are, a team of great enthusiastic folks for Tullahoma.

A Tullahoma Christmas Even the Grinch can’t help but get into the holiday spirit at the annual Christmas parade. The Tullahoma Christmas Parade is held on the first Friday of December, rain, snow, or shine. The festive event begins with a tree lighting and a grand marshal reception at the South Jackson Civic Center. At 7 pm, the parade kicks off. Firetrucks, marching bands, floats, fancy cars, the Grinch, Tullahoma’s own Coca-Cola Bear, and many others make their way down Jackson Street to Tullahoma High School. Children and adults bundled up in stocking caps, warm jackets and mitten-covered hands, line the streets and cheer on the participants. The grand finale of this storybook Christmas parade is a float carrying Ol’ Saint Nick himself. The 62nd annual Tullahoma Christmas Parade was sponsored by Stan McNabb Automotive and drew over 78 entries. Dan Lawson, who recently retired after a 22-year tenure from the Tullahoma City Schools, was the grand marshal. Recognized as a great leader, outstanding teacher, and visionary, Dr. Lawson has made a positive impact on the lives of administrators, teachers, parents, and, most of all, students. The theme of the 2018 parade was Whoville. Tullahoma Utilities Authority LightTube provided live streaming for the event. The annual Christmas parade brings a healthy dose of holiday cheer to Tullahoma during the most wonderful time of the year.

From Trash to Treasure, the Story of Tullahoma sculpture was made with recycled materials by artists Pat Rollie and Katie Pierce along with help from high school students and community members.

Recycling: It’s the Tullahoma way. by trisha sandora

G

oing green is not a new idea for Tullahoma residents. A curbside recycling program provided by the Tullahoma Public Works Department has been going on for the past 20 years. And today, over 7,000 households within the city take advantage of the service. This local effort has far-reaching effects. It not only protects the environment, but the recycling program in Tullahoma also generates approximately $400,000 a year in revenue. This revenue is a combined total of materials sold and savings from avoided landfill fees.

Robin Dunn, a member of the Tullahoma Board of Mayor and Aldermen and the board’s representative on the Go Green! Council is passionate about recycling, and her enthusiasm is contagious. With the help of 6-8 volunteers a month, she leads the community forward with new ideas about how to reduce the carbon footprint in Tullahoma. Through events such as the recent Master Recycling Program hosted by CFC Recycling, and the Earth Day Celebration which drew over 600 people, Dunn is creating awareness about recycling throughout Coffee County.

Compost bins will soon be offered as well to collect leaves and kitchen scraps, which are turned into rich compost for use in flower beds and vegetable gardens—now that is going green. Small efforts can have big results, and it all begins at home. “The practice [recycling] makes me very mindful of what I’m buying and what I’m throwing away,” Dunn says. Continued on Next Page

New Life in Tullahoma

When it comes to delivering babies, you’ve got a friend at nearby Tennova Healthcare-Harton.

I

n 2018, over 400 babies were delivered in Tullahoma at the Tennova Healthcare-Harton Women’s Center. Each one of these babies made an entrance into the world under the watchful eyes of compassionate and highly skilled doctors and nurses. These professionals are the heart and soul of the Women’s Center at Harton. Wanda Randolph, Director of the Women’s Center, has been at Harton for over 20 years. Although she doesn’t see patients on the floor as much as she used to, Randolph is busy working behind the scenes to help create the best patient experience possible structured around evidence-based practices. Jenny Shelton, RN Clinical Manager, has delivered hundreds of babies in her 32 years at Harton and is excited about the new changes taking place. Nontraditional pain relief alternatives such as aromatherapy and music therapy help moms relax, reduce nausea, and ease the pain of childbirth. Nitrous oxide is available for those who don’t want traditional epidurals. There are birthing

70

THINK TULLAHOMA

2019

balls, peanut balls, and positional balls available that not only help mom get comfortable, but they also help the baby get into the proper position for delivery. Glucose gel is an option for newborns at risk for neonatal hypoglycemia, which supports exclusive breastfeeding, skin-to-skin contact, and mother-infant bonding. Family-centered care is a top priority at the hospital. All patients have private rooms, private showers and baths, room monitors and couches so that dads can get some rest too. They also try to limit the separation between moms and babies with in-room admissions.

Celebration Meals When the baby arrives, it’s time to celebrate with a delicious meal. Breakfast options include an omelet, a Belgian waffle, and bacon. If it’s lunch or dinner time, the menu consists of steak, chicken, or pork chops, a twice-baked potato, a bottle of grape juice and a few commemorative glasses to take home.

Books from Birth Tennova Healthcare-Harton was one of the first hospitals to implement the Books from Birth program, an affiliate of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Books from Birth provides one book per month to children from birth through age five at no cost to families. All babies born at the hospital are enrolled in the program and sent home with their first book, “The Little Engine That Could.” The loving and nurturing staff at Tennova Healthcare-Harton is what makes this hometown hospital special—doctors and nurses, woven within the community, helping new parents and babies get off to a good start. “I love delivering babies. To help them [moms] through one of the most exciting times of their lives means a lot to me,” Shelton says. “I’m delivering grandbabies, and probably before long I’ll be delivering great-grandbabies.”

You don’t have to go to Murfreesboro, or Nashville, or Chattanooga to have excellent care. You can stay here in your own community and deliver close to home. - Jenny Shelton, RN, Clinical Manager, Women’s Center

tennessee promise Tennessee Promise is both a scholarship and mentoring program focused on increasing the number of students that attend college in our state. It provides students a last-dollar scholarship, meaning the scholarship will cover the cost of tuition and mandatory fees not covered by the Pell grant, the HOPE scholarship, or the Tennessee Student Assistance Award. Students may use the scholarship at any of the state’s 13 community colleges, 27 colleges of applied technology, or other eligible institution offering an associate degree program. While removing the financial burden is key, a critical component of Tennessee Promise is the individual guidance each participant will receive from a mentor who will assist the student as he or she navigates the college admission process. This is accomplished primarily via mandatory meetings that students must attend in order to remain eligible for the program. In addition, Tennessee Promise participants must complete and submit eight (8) hours of community service per term enrolled, as well as maintain satisfactory academic progress (2.0 GPA) at their respective institution.

Tennessee reconnect act Completing the Path for All Tennesseans to Access Higher Education

78

THINK TULLAHOMA

2019

T

he Tennessee Reconnect Act gives adults the opportunity to enter or reenter public higher education with no tuition expenses. The extension of the Drive to 55, establishes a last-dollar scholarship, which is equal to the difference between tuition and fees and any gift aid (grants and scholarships) that a student receives. In 2013, Governor Haslam launched the Drive to 55 to increase the number of Tennesseans with a postsecondary degree or certificate to 55 percent by 2025. Why Tennessee Reconnect? Tennessee needs 871,000 degrees to reach the Drive to 55 goal, but only 645,000 high school students are expected to graduate between 2014 and 2022. At every public higher education institution in Tennessee, adults earn a higher share of credentials, often because they return to education more focused on the challenge. Today, the state has a tremendous opportunity to attract more adults to higher education, with more than 900,000 Tennesseans having earned some college credit but no degree. Tennessee Reconnect provides an immediate payoff for Tennessee’s workforce and an investment in the state’s economy that will provide dividends for decades to come. Employers will get the skills and credentials they are seeking from the workforce, and employees will have new opportunities for career growth.

Eligibility Requirements

• Participate in an advising program approved by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission.

To be eligible for Tennessee Reconnect, the student must: • Not already have an associate or bachelor degree; • Have been a Tennessee resident for at least one year preceding the date of application for the grant; • Complete the FAFSA and be deemed an independent student; • Be admitted to an eligible institution and enroll in a degree or certificate program at least part-time (6 semester hours); and

To maintain the Tennessee Reconnect grant, the student must enroll in classes leading to an associate’s degree or certificate, maintain a 2.0 GPA, and maintain continuous enrollment. The Tennessee Reconnect Programs Tennessee Reconnect is one major initiative of the Drive to 55. The programs of Tennessee Reconnect directly focus on the fourth strategy of Drive to 55, which is to create opportunities for adults to finish a degree or credential that they have started.

Below are the descriptions of the Tennessee Reconnect programs: • The TCAT(Tennessee College of Applied Technology) Reconnect Grant pays the remaining balance of tuition after state, and Pell grants have been applied. This grant is available for adults who are Tennessee residents and enroll full-time at a TCAT institution in pursuit of a certificate or diploma. • The Community College Reconnect Grant is a scholarship program that began in 2016. Tennessee residents who have earned at least 30 credit hours toward an associate degree, enroll in at least 9 credit hours per semester, and have not been enrolled in a postsecondary institution at least one year prior to application are eligible. • TN Reconnect Communities & the TN Reconnect Community Network focuses on supporting local communities with centers that provide a variety of services including advising, career counseling, and scholarship resources. These centers will also act as a connecting point for local employers, local institutions of higher education, and prospective adult learners. In January of 2016, a new web portal was launched to help adults navigate learning opportunities available at Tennessee institutions (www.TNReconnect.gov). The portal also allows

former community college and university students to enter transcript information and receive back a list of academic pathway options and institutions offering those options. • Tennessee Reconnect + Complete program reaches out to Tennessee adults aged 25-64 who have earned at least 50 percent of credits toward an associate or bachelor’s degree but have never finished college. The purpose of the program is to provide resources for Tennessee institutions to reach out to these adults and encourage them to complete their degree. • Ready to Reconnect Institutional Grants program supports mini-grants to fund institutional initiatives that support adult learning. Many of the funded programs plan to engage adult learners by connecting them with adult learner peers, increasing access to technology for academic purposes, and supporting connections between their academic pursuits and career ambitions. • TimewiseTN: Turn Your Years of Knowledge into College Credit is a program that aims to develop a common language that will be clear to students and allow them to find Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) resources on campus.

PIPING ON THE GREEN Celtic Music & Arts Festival T

he Highland Rim Scottish Society will celebrate its seventh annual Celtic Music and Arts Festival, Saturday, April 6, 2019, on National Tartan Day in 2019! National Tartan Day was proposed at a meeting of the Federation of Scottish Clans in Nova Scotia in April 1987. On December 19, 1991, in response to action initiated by the Clans & Scottish Societies of Canada, the Ontario Legislature passed a resolution proclaiming April 6 as Tartan Day following the example of other Canadian provinces. Meeting in 1997 in Sarasota Florida, the Scottish Coalition USA looked to see Tartan Day to be recognized in the US as it was being observed in Canada. In 1998, the efforts of the Scottish Coalition saw the United States Senate

resolution passed. This led in turn to the Congressional and then Presidential passing of the yearly recognition of National Tartan Day Observance on April 6. The Seventh “Piping on The Green” gets underway on Saturday, April 6, 2019, from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. The Celtic-themed festival, held on “The Green” of The Celtic Cup Coffee House in Tullahoma, has something for everyone from Celtic-inspired music, vendors with arts and crafts, dancing, and comedy to Celtic food and beverages, workshops and demonstrations. The festival kicks off with a welcome from the HRSS’s president, our famous “Kilted” Honor Guard, the singing of our National Anthem by Tullahoma A Capella Singers, the Piping of “Scotland the Brave”, and the announcement of the Juried Art Show winners. This year’s theme is Scottish Shorelines and art entries are open to the public. The Celtic Cup’s outdoor “Medieval Mug” will offer Celtic favorites such as Scotch Eggs, Bangers ‘n’ Mash, Bridies, Fish and Chips, and the best “American” Haggis pasties that I have ever tasted! You will also be able to raise a pint or two of some Gaelic favorites.

Musical performances will include our morning risers The Secret Commonwealth returning for their 7th year, followed by Black Market Haggis, dancers from the Sinclair School of Highland Dance, Pay The Reckoning Trio, and Triquetra Troupe performing comedy and Irish step-dancing. And returning by popular demand Scotland Rising, our headliners from Texas! They will cap off their performance and our festival with the crowd joining in for “Auld Lang Syne”. And if that isn’t enough, you might hear them “pipe for their supper” down the street at the St. Barnabas Lasagna dinner. Festival goers, vendors, and take-down crews are welcome to participate. The purpose of this yearly event offered by the Highland Rim Scottish Society is to educate and entertain the general public of this area’s wonderfully rich Scot-American heritage! The Society meets the third Tuesday of the odd-numbered months at 7 p.m. at The Celtic Cup Coffee House. LOCAL LOVE

We love that it takes only an hour to drive to surrounding big cities like Chattanooga, Huntsville, or Nashville where we can spend the day. You can take advantage of the big city without having to permanently live there. You don’t have to worry about the daily, rush hour traffic that comes with living in a large city- you can easily drive back to our quiet small town.

With loads of unique local products and places like George Dickel Distillery, Ole Shed Brewing Company, our Lynchburg neighbor Jack Daniel’s, or Tennessee Tanning Company, the exclusive manufacturer for MLB leather, our abundance of homegrown products and services is a point of love and pride – and they help our economy thrive.

10 BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT With a quality educated workforce, Tullahoma is a national leader for aerospace and technology industries, home to the world’s most advanced flight testing center in the world and serves as the regional hub for medical and retail services.

long a scenic Tennessee backroad, nestled amidst beautiful forests and lush meadows, whisky slowly seeps through large vats of charcoal, one drop at a time. The Cascade Hollow Distilling Co., the home of George Dickel, has been “making whisky the hard way” for over 130 years, and if George were here today, he wouldn’t have it any other way. It is still the only Tennessee distillery where the whisky is chilled before undergoing the charcoal-mellow

Community Playhouse

Providing live theater for the Tullahoma Community for more than 62 years! The Community Playhouse, Inc. is a non-profit, self supporting, all volunteer organization whose purpose is to provide opportunities for creative involvement in the presentation of live theater in the Middle Tennessee area. The Community Playhouse, Inc. has been in existence since 1954 when it opened its first production at Bel Aire School. In 1955, the group moved to the old theater at the historic Northern Field in Tullahoma where it continued productions until moving to the old South Jackson school building (now South Jackson Civic Center) in 1978. It

held the distinction while there of being the “resident theater” in that building. Today the playhouse is on the move again. Deciding that it needs to become more autonomous, it has left the South Jackson group and is making plans toward establishing its own identity in a facility devoted to live theater arts. It is also devoted to educating the community in the skills of the theater: acting, singing, and dancing for theater; technical work with lighting and sound; advisory skills in directing and producing; set design and construction; costuming and makeup; and more.

These opportunities are made available to adults, teens and children of all races, creeds, religious affiliations, sexual orientation, abilities and disabilities. All are welcome to participate. We are the second oldest community theater in the Middle Tennessee area. Membership is open to all interested in encouraging and supporting the performing arts in our community. The painted house A House Full of Fun, Creative & Happy Souls

O

wned and operated by Tullahoma native Annie Rone, Annie opened The Painted House in Tullahoma, TN in September 2013. Annie is happy to call The Painted House "home," after teaching in many different places, including her own front porch. "This is a special place that I hope will feel like home to all who visit," says Annie. Annie has her Masters in Education from The University of Tennessee and taught school for four years before she picked up a paint brush. Her motto is "perfect is boring." It is of utmost importance to Annie for her students to feel proud of themselves and to understand that sometimes mistakes can be a good thing. Annie is a self-taught artist that teaches what she knows. Often she refers to herself as a cheerleader with really great art supplies. She is passionate about paint, color, and especially about giving children an opportunity to express themselves through art. Annie surrounds herself with wonderful people that help to keep her grounded

and that encourage her to grow. Laura Daniel (LaLa), Elizabeth (Bita) Jordan, and Claudia Vaden (Mama) are priceless additions to The Painted House that she couldn't do without. Annie has her artwork for sale at Local Color Gallery in Nashville, TN, The Painted House, and Tullahoma Fine Arts Center. We feel such great success when a child or parent asks us about our supplies--what we use, where we purchase them, etc. That means, more than likely, that some great masterpieces are going to also be created at home! WE LOVE THAT! The products that we use are chosen for their high quality, sustainability, and brilliant qualities. There's a difference! Come see for yourself! But if you want to invest in some good products, check out these spots! One of our favorite places to shop is www.plazaart.com out of Nashville, TN. www.dickblick.com is another favorite!

Golden, Liquitex, Plaza Art, & Blick brands are our favorite acrylic paints. Blick brand stretched canvases are our go-to canvases to date. We use mostly synthetic bristle brushes, and we really prefer to touch those before we buy. Be on the lookout at Hobby Lobby or Michael's for sales on their brushes and go pick out a few nice ones to get you started! As with any great hobby, it is an investment, so taking care of your products is key! As long as you care for everything, your products should last you for a very long time. Remember, art is in the doing, so just go for it! Art, be it paint, cooking, gardening, drawing, etc. is just good for the soul. We'd love for you to come let out that inner child/artist with us at The Painted House!

South Jackson Civic Center A Historic Venue for All Citizens to Enjoy

S

outh Jackson Civic Center is a jewel in the crown of Tullahoma. Located at 404 South Jackson Street, the original building was constructed in 1886 and housed Tullahoma’s first public school. This year, we are celebrating our 40th anniversary as a performing arts venue. During this time, the building has expanded to provide more classrooms and an auditorium with great acoustics and a (preeminent) proscenium stage. In 1972, the student body moved back to Jack T. Farrar Elementary School. By the end of the decade, the building had fallen into disrepair, and plans were made to tear it down. Aware of its potential and historical significance, concerned citizens, led by the late Alice Harton Ratcliffe, launched a successful campaign to “Save South Jackson.” Thousands of volunteer hours were invested in the restoration of the building making it ready for occupancy again.

performing arts continue to be taught to aspiring lighting and sound technicians as well as those singing, dancing, and acting on stage. The building grounds have seen weddings, funerals, class reunions, corporate training, music festivals, and living history. Also, the Mitchell Museum, which is housed on the first floor, is a wonderful source of local history and receives many visitors every year. Today, we continue to grow our programming for the Performing Arts Series. The Association’s operations are guided by volunteer board directors who have a passion for the performing arts and the desire to maintain the historic venue for all citizens to enjoy. We are expanding our venue options with the addition of an outdoor stage and Black Box theatre. For volunteer opportunities and membership in the South Jackson Civic Association and

Tullahoma ARts Center T

he Tullahoma Arts Center, located at 401 Jackson Street, is housed in a two-story brick house that is one of the oldest structures in Tullahoma. It is not only a place that preserves the past, but it is one that brings present-day art experiences to the region. The center promotes the development of arts through classes, demonstrations, performances, publications, and exhibitions. There is also a Member Gallery where members may display and sell their original works—creating unique marketing opportunities for artists to reach local, regional and national audiences. The variety of classes offered at the center include yoga,

oil painting, after-school art programs, piano, and guitar lessons. There are also several dance classes such as ballroom dancing, waltz, and swing dancing. In February of 2019, a Young Artist Gallery will be opening with exhibits from local and regional students and emerging artists under the age of 18. The Tullahoma Arts Center is a place that empowers youth in the arts and engages the adult community as well. For more information visit www.tullahomaart.org or Tullahoma Art Center on Facebook.
