Judge Pickering speaks at YWCO “Celebrate America” By Linda Cranford The honorable Judge Charles Pickering, retired federal judge of the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, was the keynote speaker at the annual YWCO “Celebrate America” program, Tuesday June 30. YWCO Board President, Mary Allred, welcomed everyone to the Y, and the Laurel High School ROTC Color Guard presented the colors. Allred led the assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthen was sung by Katrina Cox. The invocation was given by Pastor Lewis Allred, Chaplain Lt. Commander, retired Navy. The guests enjoyed a traditional Southern lunch of barbecue chicken, baked beans, potato salad, and desert, prepared by the YWCO staff, and served by the members of the YWCO board and YWCO Teens. YWCO Board First Vice President, Mary Kay Rogers, recognized the members of all branches of the military in attendance, and the families of veterans.

Pickering began his keynote speech saying, “Two hundred thirty nine years ago this Saturday, our founding fathers declared our independence, and proclaimed those immortal truths - we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. There are three things about this part of the declaration that I would point out. One, it acknowledged that there was a creator; two, it acknowledged that our rights come from that creator; and, three, it holds a contradiction that all men are created equal, because at that time there was still slavery.” Pickering went on describing the history of our country, and how those first colonies “endured incredible difficulties.” See PICKERING, page 10

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America, When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. “Why were they willing to come to America and face such hardships,” asked Pickering. “They came here because they wanted freedom to worship God as they saw fit, and they wanted a better way of life for themselves and their children.” Pickering continued, “Eleven years after the Declaration of Independence 55 delegates gathered in Philadelphia for three long hot summer months to debate and finally adopt our Constitution. James Madison, the father of our Constitution, said the most difficulty they faced was creating a government strong enough to govern and not so strong that it would take away the rights of the people.” Throughout his presentation, Pickering emphasized the fact that our country was founded on Judeo-Christian principles. “Where did the founders find the inspiration,” asked Pickering. “The Bible is quoted four times more than any other authority in adopting our Constitution.” He then spoke of the history of America after our founding, and the wars that were

fought to keep our freedom. Speaking of WWI, he said, “The Greatest Generation responded to the call of duty and America saved the entire world from tyranny. What did America do after it rescued the world from evil? Did America claim any of the territory it seized, any of the land it had conquered? No, America took title only to the land required to bury its dead. This established, what some would deny today, American exceptionalism. We owe the men and women who serve in our military, many of them gave of their lives, a tremendous debt of gratitude and appreciation.” In speaking of the problems facing America today, Pickering said that for 183 years from the establishment of our constitution in 1789 to 1972, America was governed consistent with Judeo-Christian principles. JCJC holds Boys Team Soccer Camp Submitted

Over 60 youngsters attended the Jones County Junior College Boys Team Soccer Camp June 22-26. Campers received instruction in the basic fundamentals of the game. The youngsters used Bobcat Soccer Field, Bobcat Stadium/Sim Cooley Field, the JCJC football practice field and the band practice field during the entire week. They went through technical and tactical sessions and scrimmages before dividing up into teams and holding their own version of the World Cup to conclude the camp.

A lawyer, a husband, a son—Lew Yoder has a lot of roles, but his favorite is being dad to his beautiful daughter, Blair. Lew and his wife, Jade, had their daughter at South Central Regional Medical Center two and a half years ago and they remember it like it was yesterday. “When we moved here, South Central had just recruited a new OBGYN, Dr. Becky Roberts, who was absolutely wonderful before, during and after our delivery. It could not have been a better experience for a first time mom and dad. Everyone at the hospital was phenomenal.” He said, like most new parents, he and Jade would be concerned about little things, but Dr. Roberts was always so responsive when they called. “That is what is great about living in a smaller community,” he said, “where you know the doctors, the nurses and even the administrators. It is not like that in larger communities.” Lew’s parents grew up in Laurel. They, along with Lew and his brother, went to Laurel High School where the football team still plays “between the bricks”. Lew and Jade lived in other places, but knew that when they started a family, they wanted to move back to Laurel. When it comes to raising Blair, Lew says, “my vision for her is to grow up as happy as I was as a child in a place where she can make great friends and be surrounded by her parents, her grandparents and her aunt and uncle who all love her,” Lew said. “I want her to get a great education which she can get here and quality health care at a remarkable hospital with great doctors who care about her, our family and our community.” Lew said he sees nothing but a bright future for Laurel and Jones County and he looks forward to living here for many years to come.
