Annual Report 2013

Mission STATEMENT The Montclair Art Museum (MAM), along with its Yard School of Art, engages a diverse community through its distinctive collection of American and Native American art, exhibitions, and educational programs that link art to contemporary life in a global context.

Vision and values sTATeMenT As the Montclair Art Museum approaches its Centennial in 2014, we seek to elevate our profile as a nationally recognized leader of mid-sized, regional art museums. Valuing diversity, innovation, and the importance of art to society, we will invigorate our curatorial presentations, expand our educational mission, promote greater connections to our community, engage in fruitful partnerships that reach deep into our region and beyond, embrace new media and technologies, pursue responsible facilities management and environmental impact, and secure our financial stability.

Diversity Statement The Montclair Art Museum is committed to being an inclusive and diverse organization, one that respects and welcomes individual differences in order to offer the most meaningful art experience to the widest possible audience. We strive to cultivate an environment that fosters productivity, creativity, and individual satisfaction by celebrating such differences as race, gender, nationality, age, religion, sexual orientation, and physical abilities.

From the president

The Museum has once again proved that art matters.

W

e are pleased to present the FY 2013 Annual Report, which documents a very successful and exciting year as the Montclair Art Museum reached out to new audiences while preparing for its Centennial celebrations in 2014. The Museum has once again proved that art matters—through our exhibitions, our school, our public programs, our tours, and our many and increasingly critical alliances with a variety of community organizations, MAM touches a diverse and appreciative public. Our Board has continued to play an active role in implementing MAM’s strategic plan, resulting in rotating the permanent collection more frequently, staging nationally significant exhibitions, demonstrating our commitment to contemporary art, enhancing MAM’s educational role in the community, raising awareness among a broad and geographically varied public, and ensuring fiscal stability. These are no easy feats, and I thank the Board and Staff for their untiring efforts. Important this past year for our Centennial preparations was a Brand development project led by MAM’s Marketing Committee in conjunction with volunteer Brock Danner, of Design Made, a creative agency based in Morristown that focuses on brand creation and customer experience. A main goal of the initiative was to help define the “MAM experience” and use that to inform our daily decision-making, as well as to develop a graphic identity, resulting in a new look and feel for the Museum. I thank the Board members, Staff, and Volunteers for the hard work they devoted to this effort, and especially Brock Danner for his thoughtful leadership. We thank as well all our generous supporters, who make possible the activities and accomplishments that you will read about in this report. I invite you to visit this wonderful Museum as often as possible—in person and online—to take advantage of everything we have to offer and to help us spread the word about our contributions to the understanding and appreciation of visual art.

From the Director on the outdoor video monitors, and our first-ever joint project with Bloomfield College. Our two institutions awarded the first Bloomfield Avenue Prize to artists Karina Skvirsky and Liselot van der Heijden for their interactive project, The Bloomfield Avenue Hotline, which united the communities of Bloomfield College and the Montclair Art Museum through technology.

F

iscal year 2013 saw some of our best-attended exhibitions in the Museum’s history, significant outreach programs through our education department and Yard School of Art, special initiatives that have attracted new audiences, and an extraordinary series of fundraising events. Our Fall exhibition season included the popular Georgia O’Keeffe in New Mexico as well as Saya Woolfalk: The Empathics, the second in the New Directions series of contemporary art exhibitions. For the New Jersey Arts Annual, we showcased 13 New Jersey artists producing work that actively and innovatively engaged with digital media. Additionally, Patterns, Systems, Structures: Abstraction in American Art, drawn entirely from the permanent collection, explored the rich varieties of approaches to abstraction. The Spring season led off with our tribute to the 1913 Armory Show, which drew large numbers of visitors and widespread critical acclaim. It was accompanied by a show featuring Oscar Bluemner’s representations of Paterson, New Jersey, when it was a thriving manufacturing center suddenly thrown into social, political, and economic upheaval in the early 20th century. Our focus on contemporary art continued with two works by Brooklyn-based artist Lee Arnold

The Armory Show and Georgia O’Keeffe were, respectively, the third and fourth best-attended exhibitions in the history of MAM. All in all, the season happily fulfilled the expectations of the Museum’s strategic plan, as summarized in MAM President Newton Schott’s letter.

The year included the third and fourth best-attended exhibitions in the history of MAM. Our educational activities were robust on every front, including 29 public programs, 19 community exhibitions, and 13 family programs. The Art School offered an astounding 239 studio art courses and workshops serving more than 2,000 students. The Scholastic Art Awards continued to grow in size and impact, attracting 3,400 submissions, more than double the 1,500 submissions MAM received when we began this national partnership in 2009. MAM is also mindful of those for whom attending a class or engaging in art activities may prove a financial hardship, and so we offered 30 free need-based scholarships to Art School classes and scholarship tours for nearly 2,000 disadvantaged students from underserved communities.

and crucial to our budget are the special events our Board and Staff organize to raise the needed funds. We kicked off the year with Smokin’ Hot BBQ, celebrating the Georgia O’Keeffe exhibition with a southwestern theme. Surrounding our biennial celebration, Art in Bloom, were two fundraisers: A “Friday Night Live” dinner dance honoring Bob Constable and Bob Butler, and an “In Full Bloom” lecture and luncheon honoring Brenda Bingham. We concluded the year with our now-annual MAM Wine Bar, which took place on a superb evening in June on the Museum’s front lawn. I thank the chairs and cochairs of the committees that made these events possible, all of whom are recognized in the report. This fiscal year also witnessed the launch of the highly successful Free First Thursday Nights, which brought a new and diverse audience to the Museum. On the first Thursday of every month October through June, MAM lights up the night, remaining open 5–9 p.m. with dynamic and always-changing programming, tours of exhibitions, art projects, interactive entertainment, a fullservice bar, and live music courtesy of the Jazz Studies program of Montclair State University’s John J. Cali School of music. Our eight First Thursdays (one having been canceled due to Sandy) attracted over 4,500 visitors—an average of nearly 600 people a night! I thank our hardworking Board and Staff, our dedicated Volunteers, our numerous community partners, and all our supporters, who give so generously to MAM throughout each year.

Annual Report 2013

FY 13 Accomplishments • The new MAM website launched in August 2012 after over a year of preparation and production. It offers easier navigation, a more up-to-date appearance, and greater e-commerce functionality.

• In the 2012 People’s Choice Awards, sponsored by Discover Jersey Arts, MAM was voted among the top two favorite museums in New Jersey and the Yard School of Art won first place for Favorite Place to Take an Adult Arts Class and Favorite Place to Take a Kid’s Arts Class. It was the first time the Yard School of Art had ever been nominated in those categories.

• MAM remained open throughout Hurricane Sandy and its aftermath, serving as a comfortable and welcoming community resource during this trying time. The Museum offered free admission, and drew nearly 500 visitors to the galleries. In addition, over 100 Facebook followers registered their gratitude.

• The Museum saw a 16% increase in membership in FY 13, bringing our current membership to over 2,500 member households in 15 counties within New Jersey.

• In our Yard School of Art, over 2,000 students of all ages took one or more of 205 classes and 47 workshops. The Yard School’s Ceramics Studio remains the only resource of its kind at a Museum in NJ, and our Digital Media Lab has proven to be highly successful at attracting new students.

• MAM is proud to be a family-friendly institution. Park Bench, Free Family Days, and SummerART are just a few of MAM’s programs that continue to provide excellent art opportunities to the youngest members of our community.

• MAM launched Free First Thursday Nights, a new initiative that saw the Museum open late from 5 to 9 p.m. the first Thursday of the month from October to June, with free admission, dynamic programming, live music, tours, and a full-service bar. Free First Thursday Nights have proven very successful in attracting new visitors, with 35% of attendees reporting that they had never been to MAM before. These 8 evenings (November was cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy) brought in 4,574 people.

• In February and April 2013, MAM’s Ceramics Studio offered two classes for visually impaired students, thanks to the generosity of the William G. and Helen C. Hoffman Foundation. More than 20 students participated in the classes, which were the product of several years planning, and helped MAM realize a long-term goal of serving segments of our community that otherwise may have limited exposure to the arts. MAM plans to continue these offerings in 2014.

• Over 320 tours take place every year, with over 20% of school tours reaching underserved communities. • The Scholastics Art Awards attracted 3,400 submissions, more than double the 1,500 submissions MAM received when we began this national partnership in 2009. The winners’ works were displayed in MAM’s education galleries in February and went on to receive national attention.

• MAM was featured prominently in Herb & Dorothy 50 x 50, a film by Megumi Sasaki which documented the legendary art collectors’ national gift project, donating fifty works to one museum in every state. The film premiered at the Whitney Museum in spring 2013.

• MAM’s Marketing Committee undertook a Brand Development project with the assistance of pro-bono designer and strategist Brock Danner of Design-Made. A main goal of the initiative was to help define the MAM experience, with workshops exploring the question: “MAM is…,” and resulted in a new identity and communication platform that is being rolled out in all Museum materials in FY14.

The Museum hit a grand slam with the New York Times in its coverage of the Armory Show, which included a listing in the Times’s highly competitive New Season calendar in the Fall, an extensive pre-exhibition article by Holland Cotter, a mention in The Week Ahead, and a review by Ken Johnson, all of which appeared in the national edition of the paper. The Armory Show and Georgia O’Keeffe were, respectively, the third and fourth best-attended exhibitions in the Museum’s history.

Social Media MAM’s social media presence grew to providing an average of 200,000 social media impressions a month. These impressions led to approximately 3,500 interactions (clicks, likes, retweets, etc.) by over 700 unique people a month.

Increased social traffic around Art in Bloom made April 2013 the highest social activity month in MAM’s history—with 546,409 impressions producing 244,294 interactions by 1,749 unique users.

MAM’s social media activity not only drives additional traffic to our website, but also extends the reach of PR initiatives, such as over 70 retweets of the New York Times article on The New Spirit (April 25). New features helped increase traffic and engagement in FY2013. Our most popular addition was the weekly Yard School of Art behind-the-scenes photo, which continues to have a high degree of engagement. There is also a notable spike in social media and website activity the first week of the month, corresponding with Free First Thursday Nights (#MAMfftn). Free First Thursday Nights continue to be promoted primarily through social media. MAM’s FY13 social media program culminated in the first ever Members Appreciation Day June 12, when members were recognized for their support of the Museum and encouraged to post about their involvement in MAM. Janet Shapiro (@pretzel0728) “@MAMmontclair looking forward to annual meeting tonight and wine bar event Fri night. MAM is a gem and a wonderful asset to North Jersey” Audrey Anderson (@Audrey_e_Ander) retweeted Montclair Art Museum “‘I became a Member because it felt important to support such a wonderful neighborhood treasure’ #MAMmembership RT if you agree!”
