VISION, VALUES, AND DIVERSITY STATEMENT After 100 years of service, MAM is recognized as the leading American art museum and community art school in Northern New Jersey. As an organization, we value: artistic inspiration, diversity of voices, individual and group creativity, and the importance of all arts to a civil, inclusive and forward-thinking society.

MISSION STATEMENT The Montclair Art Museum, together with its Vance Wall Art Education Center, engages our diverse community through distinctive exhibitions, educational programs, and collections of American and Native American art. Our mission is to inspire and engage people of all ages in their experience with art, including the rich inter-cultural and global connections throughout American history, and the continuing relevance of art to contemporary life.

We respect and welcome individual differences and strive to maintain an environment that fosters productivity, creativity, and individual satisfaction by celebrating the diversity of race, gender, nationality, age, religion, sexual orientation, and physical abilities. During our second century, we will invigorate our collections and curatorial presentations; expand our educational services and audience; support artists, their work and connections; pursue productive institutional partnerships; and embrace new media and technology. We will also secure MAM’s financial stability and preserve its facilities and other assets in a prudent and sustainable way.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES AND MUSEUM DIRECTOR

Frank Walter III President of the Board of Trustees

Lora Urbanelli Museum Director

The Montclair Art Museum exemplifies the maxim, “Think Globally, Act Locally” in ways both obvious and subtle. In 2016 the Museum brought some of the most remarkable art on the planet to our galleries with our groundbreaking exhibition Matisse and American Art. In addition, Janet Taylor Pickett: The Matisse Series connected the master’s work to the experience and perspective of a well-known New Jersey artist. Our fall exhibition do it empowered Museum visitors to “collaborate” with a range of artists to produce original community works in MAM’s first experiential show. And issues of art, identity, and creativity enlivened our Vance Wall Art Education Center and Yard School of Art courses throughout the year, celebrating world-class instructors and artists in our backyard. The Montclair Art Museum relies on a combination of both public and private funding to support art exhibitions and educational programming such as these. Although it is not our largest source of support, the funding we receive from the National Endowment for the Arts, for instance, makes a crucial difference in the exhibitions and programming we offer. This year, federal insurance funding was vital to our Matisse and American Art exhibition and our ability to create and offer a range of free public programming that makes art accessible to everyone. We are grateful for all who support the power of the arts to engage with global issues on the local level—support that makes what we do possible. Though national and global change happens practically daily, the Montclair Art Museum remains a constant source of inspiration for our region. With your devoted involvement, we will continue to create connections, stimulate conversations, and spark imaginations through exhibitions that reveal the mastery of artists as varied as Henri Matisse and Kara Walker. We thank our trustees, staff, volunteers, artists, foundations, corporations, and private donors who have contributed time, creativity, and financial support to MAM. And we thank all of you for making our work possible and invite you to learn from this annual report more about how MAM makes a difference to the life of Northern NJ.

AWARDS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS

1. The special exhibition Matisse and American Art curated by MAM Chief Curator Gail Stavitsky premiered at MAM on February 4, 2017 and quickly became the second highest attended exhibition in MAM history. In just 19 weeks, the exhibit averaged 800 gallery visitors per week, adding up to a total of 27,068 visitors. New memberships also increased by 25% and tours booked in record numbers serving over 6,613 visitors. With generous donor support, special marketing and promotional efforts were made to increase attendance, attract groups for adult tours, and continue to strengthen our school visits. The Matisse and American Art exhibition was accompanied by a fully illustrated, 248-page catalogue with contributions by 17 authors. 2. Thanks to the quality of Matisse and American Art, the Museum raised nearly $700,000 in support of the exhibition from entities including JPMorgan Chase & Co., The Henry Luce Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, Helen Frankenthaler Foundation, The Blanche & Irving Laurie Foundation, Christie’s, and a multitude of generous individuals, and was awarded an insurance indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.

3. MAM’s fall 2016 do it exhibition featured a series of artists’ instructions that put the creation of the artwork into the hands of the audience. This highly participatory exhibition created an opportunity for MAM to work with a variety of regional organizations on its planning and implementation.

8. MAM’s Free First Thursday Nights offer late hours from 5 to 9 p.m. the first Thursday of the month from October to June, with free admission, dynamic programming, live music, tours, and a full service bar. The program served 5,650 visitors in FY 17, with an average evening attendance of 627.

4. Now in its second year, the Vance Wall Art Education Center encompasses all MAM’s educational efforts, including the Yard School of Art, and engaged with over 95 schools in 54 school districts, 4 institutions of higher learning, and 140 community and business organizations. Its vision for the future of education is both programmatic and physical, both on- and off-site, to fully refine and deepen these partnerships, creating national models for art education.

9. MAM docents led over 472 guided tours this year serving 9,234 students and adults, with over 20% of our school tours reaching underserved communities. 10. MAM is proud to be a familyfriendly institution. Park Bench, Free Family Days, Homeschool Days, Family Art Adventure, and SummerART are just a few of MAM’s programs that continue to provide excellent art opportunities to the youngest members of our community.

5. MAM’s fourth year of the Art Truck, a mobile open studio, served art projects and lessons to MAM’s community with over 90 visits reaching 5,000 visitors in 18 towns. It also helped to raise awareness of the importance of art making and creative endeavors as integral to lifelong wellbeing. 6. MAM’s Creative Aging program is going strong in its third year focusing on 4 initiatives for senior citizens in an effort to increase service and access for this community. 7. In the Yard School of Art, 2,651 students of all ages took one or more of 145 classes, 121 camps, and 74 workshops. The Yard School’s Ceramics Studio remains the only resource of its kind at a Museum in NJ and the Digital Media Lab has proven to be highly successful at attracting new students.

11. The Scholastics Art Awards attracted 4,200 submissions, almost triple the 1,500 submissions MAM received when we began this national partnership in 2009. NJ Regional Gold Key and Silver Key Awards were given to 748 students.

ACROSS THE GLOBE 12. MAM was awarded a Certificate of Excellence for the second year in a row by “TripAdvisor” in 2017 and the Yard School of Art was voted Favorite Adult Art Class and Visual Arts Camp in the JerseyArts.com People’s Choice Awards—for the third year in a row!

Works from the Museum’s prestigious collection were featured in museums around the world. MONTCLAIR ART MUSEUM

SPECIAL EVENTS On September 10, 2016, a steady crowd of more than 1,000 visitors enjoyed the MAM Lawn Party—a daylong celebration, free and open to the public, highlighting the opening of the Museum’s newest exhibitions Janet Taylor Pickett: The Matisse Series and do it. MAM partnered with Parents Who Rock who presented performances by over 20 local bands and performers on the Museum lawn. Family programming included art activities inspired by Janet Taylor Pickett, interactive gallery experiences throughout the do it exhibition, a musical instrument “petting zoo” presented by School of Rock / Montclair, face painting, a “let out your inner rebel” punk hair station, and family yoga. The Museum partnered with more than 50 local businesses and organizations and guests made donations to support a MAM Art Truck artist residency program at Side Door Montclair after-school locations.

On March 30, 2017, MAM launched the biennial lecture series Crosscurrents: Native American and American Art of the 20th and 21st Centuries. Through the generous support of Margo and Frank Walter, this lecture series is designed to bring together important contemporary American and Native American artists and historians to MAM for an evening lecture and discussion. MAM Chief Curator Gail Stavitsky and artist Jeff Kahm engaged in a lively dialogue on cultural exchanges between modern and contemporary American and Native American artists from the early twentieth century to present. Jeff Kahm is an associate professor in the Studio Arts Department of the Institute of American Indian Fine Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. A Plains Cree artist, Kahm describes his work as “rooted in indigenous abstraction and Modernist aesthetics.”

3 On February 3, 2017, MAM celebrated the opening of Matisse and American Art with our own blind tasting fashioned around the famed Judgement of Paris wine tasting event that was organized in Paris in 1976. Wine and Dine with Matisse, a special fundraising dinner, provided an exclusive opportunity for guests to preview Matisse and American Art in an intimate setting and act as judges while enjoying wines from exclusive vineyards and regions. Wine expert Hank Uberoi presented a blind tasting of several award-winning wines from prestigious French and California vintners, including Bordeaux from France, Napa Valley red, French Burgundy, and one of the original Chardonnays from Napa. Guests included contemporary artist Sophie Matisse, great-granddaughter of Henri Matisse, whose work was featured in the exhibition.

On November 11, 2016, MAM celebrated the return of our Secret Supper Soirée, where guests enjoyed a signature cocktail and an after-hours experience in the galleries. They joined Chief Curator Gail Stavitsky and Vance Wall Art Education Center Director Leah Fox to participate in activities related to the contemporary art exhibition do it. Guests then learned their “Secret Dinner Destination” and went on to dine at a fabulous local home and mingle with MAM friends and arts enthusiasts.

The Montclair Art Museum celebrated the magic of Matisse at its spring fundraising events, including a festive gala, after-dark soirée, and a special luncheon featuring a Matisseinspired designer’s challenge. The #CelebrateMatisse special events honored Adrian A. Shelby, Chairman Emeritus, patron, volunteer, and mentor; and JP Morgan Chase, philanthropic corporate leader in arts and culture. The Museum’s largest fundraiser of the year, the Midnight in Paris Gala on May 13 2017, was a special evening highlighting the glamor of 1920s Paris with dinner and entertainment, chaired by Susan Brady Abadan. Beginning at 6 p.m., the black tie occasion featured an exciting live and silent auction, followed by an unforgettable After Party featuring sweets and savories, a cigar and scotch bar, dancing into the night with DJ Gabriel Levy, and the Social Touch photo booth. Chaired by Gretchen Prater, the Puttin’ on the Ritz Luncheon included a private viewing of the special exhibition Matisse and American Art and an in-depth presentation on Henri Matisse and his timeless influence on American art by MAM Chief Curator Gail Stavitsky. Guests were surrounded by the spirit of Matisse: 27 local artists and businesses created unique tablescapes inspired by the French master. These fundraising events brought together artists, philanthropists, community leaders, and friends of MAM and provided critical support to MAM’s acclaimed exhibitions and award-winning education programs.

8 The MAM Wine Bar returned on June 16, 2017 with Au Revoir, Matisse, chaired by Jo Mathisen and welcomed nearly 250 guests. The evening of wine tasting and dancing concluded the Museum’s season-long celebration of all things Matisse, while bringing together community, art, and, of course, wine to toast MAM’s groundbreaking exhibition, Matisse and American Art. The event featured raffle prizes, a DJ and an exciting selection of rosé, red and white wines and hors d’oeuvres. Guests enjoyed a special art activity and after-hours access to galleries, which included a chance to compete with friends in a Matisse-inspired scavenger hunt and the opportunity to view the critically acclaimed special exhibition before it closed.
