THE CALVARY MESSENGER Calvary United Methodist Church seeks and invites all to become disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of our community and our world.

THE WAIT IS OVER Easter is so late this year—the latest it can ever be on our calendar. Christmas seems so long ago. It’s been a long wait from birth to death to resurrection. I suppose the wait from what we now know as Good Friday to Easter Sunday—the time between the death of Jesus and the death of Jesus and our Lord’s Resurrection— must have seemed a long time for his disciples. Seeing him die and hoping in his promise that they would see him again in a very short time must still have been daunting to them; the time between the two must have seemed like for ever for them. Each Gospel account of the Resurrection tells us that none of those who went to the tomb went with anticipation or expecting to see the Risen Lord. Instead, they went to offer a proper burial for a cherished friend. If they had had any hope in his promise to rise from the dead, it appears that they didn’t expect it to come true at that time. At worse, Jesus would still be dead; at best, they would have to wait even longer before seeing him. But Jesus surprises the visitors to the tomb by appearing to them. The wait wasn’t as long as it might have been or as it seemed; Jesus had kept his promise. The wait, yes, that long wait, was over! Jesus was alive! And because he was alive—living again—other things for which they had also waited a long time now began to appear in measures they could only have imagined: Hope that God was with them and was always going to be with them no matter where they were or what situation confronted them. Life—abundant life for the present and the promise of eternal life for the future—was now fulfilled in their lives. Courage to move forward into the unknown to wherever Jesus would lead them was now theirs. A peace which passes all understanding was now made available to them. And God’s great gift of love would now be their guide for how they were to live as the disciples of the Risen Christ following his example of serving others, proclaiming the Good News, and practicing peace. Easter changes everything. For all of us who confront the realities of the day with all the uncertainties of life, from earthquakes to accidents and illnesses, from harsh economic times to the normal stresses of everyday life, Easter’s gift of the Risen Lord offers us those same gifts the disciples received: Presence and empowerment; peace and love. Sometimes it may seem that we have to wait for a long time before we even realize that we already have them, that they really are ours. But as Easter shows us and all, they are indeed ours now and always, and that the wait was certainly worth it! Happy Easter and Happy Living

Games, crafts, egg hunt, and a visit from Miss Bunny!! Look for candy donation box and sign-ups for snacks. In case of rain, we will gather in Parish Hall.

In the next few months, we plan to organize Calvary. We will sort, identify, relocate, discard—and you can be a part of the process. Every group will be asked to identify their items; and dispose of those that are not needed. When we find items that we can’t identify a reason to keep, they will be placed in the hallway and you are asked to claim what belongs to your group. Items not removed after two weeks will be given to the UMW Yard Sale or thrown away. We will then inventory stored items and hope to consolidate each group’s space to one location. Contact the church office if you have any questions.

Who is a witness among us? Is a witness the one who gives a good sermon, devotional or testimonial? Is it someone who does good deeds? Are you a witness for God and His son Jesus Christ? Isaiah 43: 10-13 is about God’s witnesses. “’You are my witnesses,’ declares the Lord, ‘and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am He.’” v.10 God calls each of us to be his witness through the living of our lives as a Christian. We must be fully aware that our actions made in service to others; our words, spoken in caring and cheer without malice to others; are our witness to God. We are witnesses not only by practicing our faith, but by what we say and do to and for others in God’s name. Isaiah 58 tells us what God expects of us in relation to the “true” act of fasting. This can be equally applied to witnessing our faith. God calls us to “loose the chains of injustice” and get the oppressed free from their burdens. You are to “share you food with the hungry”; “to provide the poor wanderer with shelter (the homeless) when you see the naked, to clothe him.” V.6-7 To witness for God is not limited to a sermon, devotional or testimonial. Jesus spoke constantly about the disciples’ need to live their lives as a witness. Jesus taught his disciples that living within the Kingdom of God, meant that the self centeredness of the world was to be replaced by Godliness. We are to care for the hungry, poor and lost. Jesus said “Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you do not demand it back.” Luke 6:30 As Christian witnesses, we respond to a need when we see it. We should not wait to be asked for aid. We give of ourselves and from our resources in response to God’s grace and mercy extended to each and everyone of us. We are to witness God in our lives as an act of faith and bended knee worship. Sharing God’s Grace to us with those in need, I/ We covenant together with other members of our church family to give each month to the Calvary Dinner Covenant Fund what I/we consider to be the reasonable cost of a dinner out, to be used to assist those in need in our church, the Frederick community and the world. I/We covenant to continue our giving so long as God’s grace enables us to do so but understand that we may withdraw from the covenant at any time. Christian Education News Upcoming Events: Bring a Friend to Sunday School April 3, 2011. Safe Sanctuary Annual Refresher Sunday, May 22, 2011 at 11:00 & again at 12:30 in the parish hall. Confirmation Sunday June 12, 2011 Promotion Sunday & VBS Kick-off June 19, during Sunday school hour Vacation Bible School June 20-24, 2011 Summer Sunday School June 26 – August 21, 2011 Resume Regular Sunday School August 28, 2011

Several have asked recently about our Lenten Organ Recital Series. I decided not to hold them this year because our organ has been in such disrepair and very unpredictable. Much of the damage to the organ and plaster up in the pipe chambers has been caused by the water leaks we have had over the years. The organ is also showing signs of age and is in need of a major overhaul. For now, we are moving ahead with the water damage and plaster repair. This will not fix everything, but will have all of the pipes speaking again. It will also keep plaster from falling into the organ parts. The work will begin on March 28 and take approximately 3 weeks to complete; and should be up and running again by Palm Sunday. I must say it was heartwarming to learn that the annual recitals were missed. I hope we will be able to hold them again next year.

Spring has arrived in all its glory. The days grow longer, brighter, warmer, and we feel renewed as we see God’s creation all around us “springing” into new life. Just as our world has seasons, so the church does as well. Looking at the list of events above, we see that the regular school year is coming to an end, and the summer Sunday school season will soon be upon us. Once again this summer, the Education Building will be closed for the final round of asbestos removal. Therefore, we will need to relocate a number of our Sunday school classes for the summer months. Specific information about class relocations will be provided in the June newsletter. Due to a conflict with Confirmation Sunday, Promotion Sunday has been scheduled for June 19. June 19 is also our official “kick-off” for Vacation Bible School, which will begin the very next day (June 20-24). Once Vacation Bible School is over, the Education Building will be closed for asbestos removal and those Sunday school classes affected will be moved to their temporary summer locations starting on June 26. The children and youth summer Sunday school classes will be grouped as follows: PreK & K will make up one class, Elementary grades 1-5 will make up a second class, and the middle school grades 6-8 will make up the third class. We will need two adult volunteers for each class each week. Lessons will be provided. Be watching for the sign-up sheet in the parish hall to volunteer. Moving on to another subject, it is time again for our Safe Sanctuaries Annual Refresher training. We promise to take no more than an hour of your time. And we have tried to make it as hassle-free as possible by scheduling the refresher training on a Sunday (so no extra drive out to church). And we have even tried to be mindful about people attending both worship times by offering the training on May 22 from 11:00 – 12:00 and again from 12:301:30 (in the parish hall). And finally, the children and youth Sunday school classes will be participating in another “Bring a Friend to Sunday School” event on April 3. Last year our Sunday school teachers prepared a special lesson with visitors in mind. They taught their students how to “Pray in Color,” so parents, encourage your children to invite a friend (or two) to attend Sunday school with them. The adults can get in on the action too, by inviting their friends to attend as well.

Sunday, April 3 Hundreds of bells, along with horns, timpani, organ and voice, will open the new museum season in Frederick County and herald Sesquicentennial commemorations in the Heart of the Civil war, during the Bell & History Handbell Festival on Sunday, April 3 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The 5 p.m. concert will include mass rings of two special arrangements of Civil War hymns from 1861 - Maryland, My Maryland and the Battle Hymn of the Republic. Nine bell ensembles will play solo and additional mass ring selections. There is no charge, no reservations are necessary, and the public is invited. The concert will last about an hour. Nine local handbell ensembles will play en masse and with solo selections for this year's festival. For the mass-ring selections, Joche Wilmot will direct two pieces - a traditional German folk tune, Music Alone Shall Live, and his own arrangement of Maryland, My Maryland, which in 1939 was designated the Maryland state song. A spectacular, premier of a new arrangement of the Battle Hymn of the Republic will conclude the concert. Conductor Pam Ion, in collaboration with renowned handbell composer, Cynthia Dobrinski, has arranged a new version and invited guest musicians on a variety of instrument to accompany the bells and chimes. Like Maryland, My Maryland, the Battle Hymn lyrics also date from 1861. In addition to the mass selections, each participating group will play a solo selection. A diverse repertoire will be presented, including secular and sacred music. Choirs from the following churches will participate: Calvary United Methodist Church (Frederick), Frederick Presbyterian Church, Glade United Church of Christ (Walkersville), Graceham Moravian Church (Thurmont), Evangelical Lutheran Church - Zion (Middletown), Peace in Christ Lutheran Church (Walkersville), St. Anthony/Our Lady of Mt. Carmel (Emmitsburg), and St. Mark's Lutheran Church (Smithsburg).
