Happy Birthday to SUNY Ulster College marks 50th at Chamber breakfast SUNY Ulster has come a long way from its humble beginnings 50 years ago. Ulster County Community College, as it was known back in the day, opened in the fall of 1963 in the former Ulster Academy Building in Kingston. There were fewer than 50 graduates two years later, but since then SUNY Ulster has handed out 14,000 degrees and served some 400,000 students. If you want to hear more about the history and future of Ulster County’s only community college, you won’t want to miss SUNY Ulster President Donald Katt’s address to the Chamber on April 22. “We’re celebrating our 50th anniversary this year,” Katt said. “We thought we’d like to use the Chamber breakfast as a way to really reflect on the past 50 years and our service to the community and take a look at what’s on the docket at least for the next several years.” The breakfast, scheduled for 7:30-9 a.m. at the Garden Plaza Hotel in Kingston, is sponsored by the Center for Spectrum Services. Katt said he would review some of SUNY Ulster’s most popular offerings over the

years, as well as some new programs being reviewed by the state. “They will be taking us in some different directions that will be new for us and I think serve well the educational needs of the residents of Ulster County,” he said. “I’ll be talking about our continuing ed offerings with employers for specific training of their employees.” With Ulster County in the running for a gambling casino at the former Nevele Hotel and Country Club, Katt said he has been in discussions with developers about offering non-credit courses in gaming at SUNY Ulster. Katt has been told that the casinos could need up to 600 different positions with a large demand for dealers and game operators. “We want to be prepared to make sure that they have a trained workforce to choose from,” he said. “We’re very excited about that. “We hope it’s the Nevele [that gets one of the casinos], but even if it’s not, if it ends up being two locations in Sullivan County, we CONTINUED ON PAGE 13

Woodland Pond boosts economy Join us at the Chamber’s April 30 mixer

Woodland Pond at New Paltz is neither a “glorified nursing home” nor “only for the wealthy.” The Chamber will hold its April 30 mixer from 5-7 p.m. at Ulster County’s only Continuing Care Retirement Center and Woodland Pond officials hope they can dispel those two misconceptions before the night is over. “Neither of these misperceptions is true and we would like to ensure when guests leave [the mixer], they fully understand that Woodland Pond caters to a wide demographic,” said Christine Wirthwein, president of Wirthwein Marketing, which represents Woodland Pond. Wirthwein said Woodland Pond is one of only 12 Continuing Care Retirement Centers in the state and provides “housing, hospitality and healthcare to the county’s senior adults.” “Additionally, many Ulster County adult children have moved their parents to be closer to them,” she said. “Therefore, we wish to further educate local business leaders about the four distinctly different components on our campus. “We want to share the Woodland Pond lifestyle with those business members that may know of someone who would benefit from living at Woodland Pond, whether it be in independent living, assisted living, memory care, or the 5-star skilled nursing center.” Wirthwein said Woodland Pond officials would

also focus on the “economic benefit” the facility brings to the community and the importance of local businesses. “We have recently performed our annual assessment of the economic and social benefits Woodland Pond brings to the region and we could not be more proud of the incredible, positive impacts we bring,” she said. The report indicates that Woodland Pond expected 150 to 200 employees prior to opening, but the facility actually employed 303 people in 2013. “Gross salaries for Woodland Pond employees with New Paltz addresses exceeded $1.2 million in 2013,” the report

said, “and with the value of health insurance benefits, total wages and benefits to employees living in New Paltz approximated $1.5 million.” The report said Woodland Pond paid $286,000 to “business partners and vendors” with zip codes in New Paltz, Clintondale and Gardiner in 2013. “The average vendor in those three zip codes received $3,155 and range as high as $22,000,” the report said. At the end of 2013, Woodland Pond had 169 occupied independent living residences with an estimated annual buying power of $26,000. The report said 142 of those units are populated by people who

did not previously live in New Paltz. “These people bring spending power to the New Paltz community,” the report said. “Our residents purchase groceries, gas, prescriptions, gifts, services, and see doctors in New Paltz and that money goes into the registers of local businesses.” While the county’s business leaders tour the facility and network, Wirthwein said Woodland Pond would provide spectacular food and drink. “We are planning to link up with several local wineries to host a fantastic mixer overlooking the Shawangunk Ridge, hopefully with some April sunCONTINUED ON PAGE 11

Networking Works! Connection at Chamber’s Business Card Exchange results in business boost EDITOR’S NOTE: We received the following letter from Melissa Paradies, Communications Manager at UlsterGreene ARC, regarding a successful networking connection that originated at our monthly Business Card Exchange. *** *** *** Networking at the Business Card Exchange WORKS! After Kathy Bonelli and I spoke at the Chamber’s Business Card Exchange in January, I received a phone call from Angela Hillard at River Radiology (another Business Card Exchange attendee). She said that she was so touched by our story about Theo and Theo’s Bottle & Can Return that she went back to the office and realized River Radiology does not have a place for employees to “recycle” their soda bottles & cans. As a result, we will be delivering a “Theo’s Receptacle” to River Radiol-

ogy! River Radiology will then bring the amassed bottles & cans to Theo’s where we will process them and mail River Radiology a check for the monies redeemed. From this endeavor River Radiology is going to create a “charitable giving” opportunity, where the monies collected from the bottles & cans will be donated to a charity of the employees’ collective choice! Ulster-Greene ARC is so proud of this connection! We are thankful for the new business that Theo’s Bottle & Can Return will be receiving and happy that another worthwhile non-profit will be getting a donation to fulfill their mission… all a result of the fine work the Ulster County Chamber does! *** *** *** Theo’s Bottle & Can Return is open Tuesday – Saturday, 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM at 78 Bruyn Avenue, Kingston, NY.

Pictured at River Radiology with Theo’s Receptacle are (L-R): Dr. Sandip Nayee (Radiologist at River Radiology), Garilyn Emig (Lead CT Technician at River Radiology), Theo Radice (Team Leader at Theo’s Bottle & Can Return), Angela Hillard (Human Resource Generalist for River Radiology), John McHugh (Executive Director of Ulster-Greene ARC), Jeanne Scharschu (Marketing Representative & Patient Liaison for River Radiology), and Ward Todd (Chamber President).

‘I care a lot about my customers’ Academy General Insurance has a heart “Do you want to speak to the man in charge or the woman who knows what’s going on?” That’s the sign above the desk of Maryann DeGroodt, the owner of Academy General Insurance Agency at 237 Fair St. in Uptown Kingston. She not only is the woman in charge, but she knows what’s going on. “There are not many women owners in the insurance business,” DeGroodt says. “There are women managers, but not many owners. We always have to do twice as much, but we’re stronger because we do.” DeGroodt uses that energy in a compassionate way to help her clients who sometimes come to her to fix problems. “My heart and soul is into it and I care more about the customers themselves,” she said. “I get involved and do a lot of things within the community when it comes to the customers.”

DeGroodt said the first error people make is buying insurance online. “Those are people that you don’t even know,” she said of online customer service representatives. “Some people don’t want you to know them because they want to pull a scam of some sort. “You don’t go to a stockbroker and pick out your own stocks. We get the nightmares from all the direct carriers.” DeGroodt said the first question she asks new customers is whether they have ever sat down and had a heart-to-heart conversation with an insurance agent. “Insurance is not really something you should look to the Internet to buy,” she said. “It’s not like you’re buying a game for Christmas that is the same everywhere else. It’s actually personalized to your needs and it’s something that you should talk about with somebody. It really is. “Your life changes every

three to five years,” she said. “That’s everybody. You get married, you have kids, you get divorced, you get an increase in your salary, an increase in your benefits.” DeGroodt can check prices and coverage levels with several different companies and offer each client a personalized plan. She offers all personal lines of insurance, including auto, home, motorcycles, boat and renter’s insurance. “I’m an independent agent and can shop your needs,” she said. “I can shop all the different companies.” DeGroodt said most of her business comes from referrals and not the phone book or Internet. Some of her clients come from referrals after she has helped someone in a fix. She goes out of her way to educate people about the insurance industry, noting how a lapse in auto insurance can lead to exorbitant fines per day. DeGroodt also urges people not to

what I can do. I like to bring the injustices of the insurance industry to people’s attention.” DeGroodt is supportive of local veterans groups and also quietly organizes meals for victims of accidents, fires, floods and other disasters. She also has been a secret Santa and is known to deliver cookies to people who just need a lift. “It’s the right thing to do and I’m trying to teach my kids the right thing to do, that you’re supposed to help out,” she said. “If everybody took the time to care about somebody else instead of just themselves … you’re giving back to the community in some small way.” Looking back, DeGroodt said she was a single mother living in subsidized housing and “didn’t have two nickels to rub together.” Today, she owns her own business. “There’s a lot of different things that have taught me to be the strong woman that I am today and normally I don’t take no for an answer. I find a way to get things done.” It was DeGroodt’s warmth that opened the door for her to enter the insurance business in 1987. She was actually a customer of Academy General and impressed the office staff. “I came in to make a payment, and they thought I had a

nice personality,” she said. “I was very nice to the people who worked here.” DeGroodt was asked if she might be interested in a job as a file clerk. At the time, she was a single mother working three jobs. “I’m a little bit soft when it comes to single moms,” she said. “I paid my dues along the way.” In 1998, DeGroodt bought the business, which has been in several locations. She moved it to 237 Fair St.— directly across from the Ulster County Office Building— in 2001 and now has three employees. “Being across from the county office building is not a bad thing,” she says. DeGroodt said she takes advantage of the Chamber’s mixers and breakfasts to help her company, but she also likes being kept abreast of business news. “One of the big pluses that I like about being with the Chamber is you get to hear about things,” she said. “Business owners will talk to other business owners or someone will call me. They do a lot of nice things within the community and it kind of gives you a bond there.” Academy General Insurance Agency, 277 Fair St. in Kingston, can be reached at (845) 338-5510 or www. agikingston.com.

Smaldone Chiropractic Getting you well in New Paltz, Kingston Dr. David Smaldone never liked visiting a doctor who barely listened to him and was writing a script 30 to 90 seconds into the visit. “Growing up in that kind of health care system really upset me,” Smaldone says. The owner of Smaldone Chiropractic says your experience will certainly be different if you visit his sports chiropractic locations in New Paltz or Kingston. “We actually spend time with our patients,” he said. “An average new patient visit is an hour in my office. We keep our volumes very low in the office.

I don’t see a ton of people in a day and to me it’s all about helping people.” “We really care about our clients and we spend enormous amounts of time on them, developing programs specifically for them so that they can get better. We see people who have been injured for 20 years get better after three visits. Doing miracles like that gets around Kingston pretty quick, which has been awesome for business.” Smaldone has had an office in New Paltz for seven years, but opened a Kingston location at 1 North Front St. about a year ago and business has been booming. “The community here has been really uplifting and welcoming to my sports chiropractic practice,” he said. “Since I opened, my Kingston office has caught my New

The history of Adirondack Creamery is as colorful as its many ice cream flavors. Owner and founder Paul Nasrani developed a love for making ice cream on a Pennsylvania farm he visited during the summers of his youth and he dreamed of owning his own company someday. Nasrani later worked as a chief financial officer for several mediumsized companies and lived in Manhattan, where he would make batches of ice cream in his apartment to share with family and friends. “As my passion for ice cream grew, I began to spend my vacations and free time visiting dairy plants and ice cream stores across the country,” Nasrani said. On a cold Sunday in January 2004, Nasrani was passing through Grand Central Terminal when he happened upon a foreclosure auction at an ice cream shop. He purchased a batch freezer that weighed more than 500 pounds and could produce 5 gallons of ice cream at a time. “I had to find a location to put it as it was too big to put in my apartment,” he said. Nasrani got some friends and a truck to get the freezer out of Grand Central and within a year he had quit his finance job and moved to Silver Bay on Lake George to fulfill his dream. Nasrani began making ice cream for local stores and restaurants, thus the

Fresh from the Hudson Valley! Adirondack Creamery a local favorite name Adirondack Creamery. “We started selling very locally and slowly expanded,” he said. “However, I wanted to get the milk directly from the dairy—without processing. I wanted to make ice cream fresher and more natural. To do that I needed to get closer to the cows.” As luck would have it, Boice’s Dairy in Kingston was looking to rent space and equipment that fit Nasrani’s needs and he moved to Kingston seven years ago. Nasrani said Adirondack Creamery is “focused on creating great tasting, fresh, all natural ice cream.” “The ingredient list is very small, simple and easy to pronounce.” he said. “We don’t use any preservatives or artificial ingredients.” The company’s milk and cream come from Hudson Valley Fresh, a dairy farmer partnership, Nasrani said. The ingredients have no antibiotics or hormones and the ice cream is made within 36 hours of the cows being milked—super fresh and super local. Nasrani said Adirondack Creamery uses local ingredients as much as possible, including apples from Wright’s Farm in Gardiner, Toffee from Krause’s Chocolates in Saugerties and natural peppermint stick candies from Michael’s Candy Corner in Kingston. “The simplicity of the ingredients and being local

We have a growing line of flavors, with some new ones on the way such as our Banana Chocolate Chip.” Last year, one of Adirondack Creamery’s flavors called “Caramel Apple” was named the official ice cream flavor of Ulster County. The apples came from Wright’s Farm in Gardiner and the caramel was made at Cooper Street Kitchen in Stone Ridge. “Everyone has their

pressed by the care shown by his athletic trainer that he decided to make it a career. “I was like, ‘I could be in sports and take care of people. Does it get any better than that?’ ” Smaldone earned an undergraduate degree in sports medicine from SUNY Cortland and was an athletic trainer before also training to be a chiropractor. “I did thousands of hours of rehabilitation on post-surgical knees and hips for athletes who have been seriously, seriously injured and rehabbing and getting them back to participating,” he said. Smaldone went on to earn a doctorate from Palmer Chiropractic—con-

sidered the “Harvard” of chiropractic colleges—to complement his expertise in sports medicine. “I do a hybrid of the two,” he says. “I do sports medicine and I do chiropractic together in order to get people better. I take the whole picture of the body. I stretch, I adjust, I do modalities on them, and I do all sorts of different exercises. Every customer I get in is very customed. I build a routine around that patient. I don’t just give them another sheet of exercises that I’ve given to everyone else.” Smaldone said his office receives “great feedback” and the highest of ratings on such websites as healthgrades.com. “We say it’s health care with the emphasis on care,”

he said. “That’s our motto.” The company has seven employees, including two massage therapists and an acupuncturist. “We pretty much accept every insurance company out there,” he said. Smaldone said Chamber staff members have introduced him to several local sports officials, including organizers of bike races and running events. “The Chamber has given me a lot of contacts,” he said. “I’ve met tons of local community members that I never would have met if I hadn’t joined the Chamber.” Smaldone Chiropractic, 39 Center St. in New Paltz and 1 North Front St. in Kingston, can be reached at (845) 750-6913 and (845) 338-8404.

WineRacks.com a world-class firm Products made right here in Tillson Michael Babcock’s “day job” was in industrial construction when he made some custom wood wine racks for his brother-inlaw, who had just opened a wine store. He called his part-time venture The Wine Rack Company when it started in 1992. “We actually started doing a lot of display work for the Seagram’s Company and kind of rolled into wine storage,” Babcock said. The business, which stared its website in 1994, expanded rapidly and moved from Dutchess to Ulster County in 1995. What started out as a oneman operation now employs 27 people in Tillson, fulfilling Babcock’s desire to bring manufacturing jobs to the area. WineRacks.com has been so successful that it was named the Chamber’s Small Business of the Year in 2013. “We’re probably one of the world’s foremost manufacturers for the wine and spirits industry,” Babcock said. “Not only retail store fixtures, but custom home wine storage.” Restaurants, hotels and private clubs are all among Babcock’s customers. “Just anything and everything that goes into wine storage, whether it be residential, commercial, retail, hospitality,” he said. “We do not only woodworking, which we do a lot of right here in Ulster County, but we also have metal wire.

“We do all the refrigeration and all the design work. We are big consultants for the retail wine business.” WineRacks.com still operates The Wine Rack Company as a wholesale division to supply dealers and installers. The company has also grown beyond wine racks to include fine stemware and other wine-related goods and gifts. Babcock said a key to his company’s success is that it is “very customercentric.” “We’re very strong customer service oriented,” he said. “Being one of the first 500 e-commerce sites on the Internet really helps us. It’s always given us a huge advantage on our online sales. That in and of itself makes the difference. “Some of our competitors are basically importing products. We’re one of the few that actually makes products here in the Untied States.” For example, the wooden wine racks that can be found at www.wineracks. com are manufactured in Tillson using environmentally responsible materials. The wood comes from managed forests or plantations. When it comes to customer feedback, Babcock said it’s “extremely positive 99 percent of the time.” “Based on quality and customer service, there’s really nobody in the industry who is better than we

are,” he said. Babcock said WineRacks.com bounced back rapidly from the economic downturn of 2008 and 2009. “We leveled out pretty quickly in the early spring of ’09 and have rebounded quite well,” he said. “We’ve been very fortunate. It didn’t hurt us as bad as some others. We’re very resilient and have a very strong and good customer base.” Babcock said a recent fire at his business was a

We’re getting there. I wouldn’t wish that on anybody.” Babcock said the Chamber has always been helpful in promoting his business and also is an enthusiastic supporter of the popular Hudson Valley Wine and Food Fest, which WineRacks.com started in 2001. “They’re extremely good at getting the word out and spreading the word about what we do there and how we do it,” Babcock said. “We’ve found the Chamber to be a great organization and everyone there does a wonderful job.” WineRacks.com,

still think that Ulster County residents will have an interest in working at the casinos. We want to play a part in workforce training as it relates to the gaming industry.” The classes would be based on a program offered at Northampton Community College in Bethlehem, Pa., Katt said. Katt said he also would discuss SUNY Ulster’s plans for a global center for advanced manufacturing. He is talking with local manufacturers to find out what skills they need and tailor SUNY Ulster’s curriculum. “We’re actually going to create a new manufacturing laboratory,” he said. “There will be some

equipment in that lab that an individual manufacturer would find difficult in actually purchasing themselves. We’ll have these pieces of equipment available for local manufacturers to use at different stages of their design and actual manufacturing.” Katt said his speech would also cover SUNY Ulster’s role in Start-Up NY, which offers tax exemptions to businesses that partner with colleges to train the workers of tomorrow. SUNY Ulster is one of eight SUNY schools participating. SUNY Ulster will use 168,000 square feet at the former IBM-Kingston plant, now known as TechCity. “We’re gearing up for

that and I want to share some accomplishments already in that area,” he said. Start-Up NY, introduced last year by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, provides businesses with a host of tax breaks in return for offering training and internships to college students. Katt said he also would discuss STRIVE, which is in the design phase and would result in a satellite campus of SUNY Ulster at the shuttered Sophie Finn Elementary School in Kingston. “We’re still looking at the possibility of January 2015 to actually make the move from our Business Resource Center to Sophie Finn,” Katt said. “If everything goes well, I think we can make the deadline.”

Growing your business shouldn’t feel like running a lemonade stand. Let us take care of business so that you can enjoy the sweet rewards! Visit us online at www.BusinessIsSweet.com or call (866) 440-0391.

Katt said he also would update the Chamber on SUNY Ulster’s Small Business Development Center, which serves seven counties and is now its 27th year. “It’s generated over a half a billion dollars in that 27 years in business development expansion,” Katt said. “We’re very proud of that and the job they do.” Katt said when he asked Chamber President Ward

Todd if he could speak at a breakfast this year for the college’s anniversary, Todd was enthusiastically supportive. “We’re just delighted that Ward Todd is not only a former student at SUNY Ulster, but a really big cheerleader for us,” Katt said. “I’m delighted with the cooperation we have from Ward and the members of the board of the Chamber. We’re look-

ing forward to sharing the morning with them.” Chamber breakfast programs are a great way to network with other local business leaders and stay on top of current events. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged. For more information or to register, call the Chamber at (845) 338-5100 or go online at www.ulsterchamber.org.
