W H AT D O E S L O V E I N A M U LT I C U LT U R A L C H U R C H LOOK LIKE? Personal Note from Rich: This past month, Women’s Ministry hosted a conference titled “Make Us One.” The conference was about the biblical message of unity – across races, across classes, across genders, across economics and family situations, etc. Our Women’s Pastor, Marlene Nathan (who is also my wife), wrote the following. I found her thoughts to be worth sharing with you, so I decided to use Marlene’s letter for my monthly newsletter.

SIMPLE AND PROFOUND– T H E S E C O N D G R E AT E S T COMMANDMENT By Marlene Nathan

A theme ran through this year’s women’s conference on unity (called “Make Us One”) that was both simple and profound. It is a theme that also runs through the Bible and can be summed up by the second greatest commandment: love your neighbor as yourself. Our guest speaker Christena Cleveland repeated in both of her messages that a key step toward unity in the body of Christ is the willingness to “share brain space” with other people. What she meant was that we must be willing to consider things from the perspective of others – try to imagine what other people think – how things look from their vantage point. This is crucial, especially if we desire unity with brothers and sisters in Christ who are not exactly like us! We must be intentional about “getting into their heads” to understand what they think, what they value, what hurts them and what lifts them up! Lorie Rees, our Support and Recovery Pastor, put it another way in her message. She said that the key to unity was maturity – that we must grow up – and a critical stage in maturation is the ability to empathize. Babies, toddlers and young children are, for the most part, incapable of empathy because it’s always only about them! The only people they think about are themselves and the only person’s feelings that matter to them are their own! The process of maturation involves the development of the ability to empathize. As we mature, other people’s feelings begin to matter. We don’t just know when we are upset; you also notice when someone else is upset. More importantly, we care; we want to understand and be of help.

4

In my message at the conference, I said a key to unity is being willing to learn new things, specifically about other people. Learning comes in many shapes and sizes. We can learn through experiences. We can learn through listening. We can learn through reading. For me, learning about other people has been a combination of these things. I’ve had some experiences. I’ve had to really listen to what others are saying. I’ve searched out good books that expanded my knowledge and answered my questions. Learning from the experiences of others reminds me of a line from the novel (and movie) “To Kill A Mockingbird.” This story is set in Alabama during the Depression. The main characters are Atticus Finch and his two children. At one point, Atticus, a white lawyer, is trying to explain to his daughter, Scout, why he has chosen to defend a young black man in a trial that has scandalized their small town. He said to her, You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it. This theme of “sharing brain space” and “empathizing” and “walking around in someone else’s skin” is really just another way of saying what Jesus said over 2000 years ago: love your neighbor as yourself. How brilliant he was and how simple this commandment is! How should we relate to and treat anyone else on this planet, no matter who they are or what color they are or where they came from? We treat them the way we would want to be treated! Jesus knows we all love ourselves; there isn’t anyone we think about more! We all know how we want to be treated – with dignity, respect, sensitivity and kindness. So, that’s how we are to treat others. We try to imagine how we would feel if we were in their shoes, and we do what we would want done if we were them. It’s not complicated! You don’t need an advanced degree in psychology. It’s so simple and yet it’s so profound. Vineyard Columbus is not the same church it was 35 years ago! We are made up of lots of different kinds of people from lots of different places and lots of different life experiences. We need the simple yet profound message of Jesus to guide us toward unity. Because once we walk around in other people’s skin for a while, share some brain space with them and begin to empathize, we find we have a lot more in common than we ever imagined!

Beth Moore Bible Study

Beloved Disciple: The Life and Ministry of John Wednesdays, 7-9pm & Thursdays, 9:30-11:30am An 11-week study. Every disciple and early follower of Christ left a legacy for future believers. John’s legacy was love. Perhaps like no other disciple, John understood that relationship is the point. Every command of Christ and call to obedience is to enhance relationship and place the recipient in a posture the Giver can bless. This study is about finding our way to the heart of Jesus and becoming so close to Him that we begin to love what He loves and hate what He hates. Childcare is available (ages 1-12). Cost is $3/child or $5/family for each week. Please register online for the class and for childcare. For more info, contact Connie Houchins at 614.259.5330 or connie.houchins@ vineyardcolumbus.org.

or most people in central Ohio, the city of Circleville evokes images of giant pumpkins and small town America. This city

of approximately 14,000 lies about 30 miles south of Columbus and is largely an agricultural community. Described by its residents as a “farmer town,” Circleville is a quaint place; its people are hospitable, hard-working and down-to-earth. And of course, every fall it hosts the nationally acclaimed Circleville Pumpkin Show. It may seem an unlikely locale, but Circleville is also the next launch site for a Vineyard Columbus church plant. Ron and Tracy Van Horn are leading the church plant. They reflect the values of Circleville: low-key, diligent and approachable. Their character has been seasoned by decades of ministry in numerous roles. However it wasn’t long ago that the idea of Vineyard church planting was not only unlikely for the Van Horns, it was out of the question. Ron and Tracy originally felt called to ministry while they were still in high school. Since then, they have been counselors, youth leaders and volunteers at churches. Being “doers” is part of who they are and what drew them together. In the 90s, they were part of a church plant in northwest Columbus. The Van Horns described how, looking back, the church plant was too focused on programming and not enough on building relationships. “We wanted to be a cool church,” Ron admitted with a chuckle. “No wonder it failed.” They kept on serving God, however, undaunted by the setback. When Ron and Tracy married in 1995, eager to see what the Lord would do next, they did not suspect the difficulty that lay ahead. Soon after getting married Ron was offered a full-time youth ministry opportunity. Just two years into that role, they learned a lot about how not to do ministry. Ron described the time with a blunt summary. “From there we got burnt. Chewed up and spat out . . . and way more than that. We got annihilated.” Their ministry came to a close and it left them questioning their call and their faith. They moved to Circleville, Tracy’s hometown, for a fresh start. Friends invited them to check out a Vineyard Columbus weekend service. Together with their newborn daughter Roxxi, the Van Horns attended VC, slowly allowing the teachings to build them back up. Tracy recalls that, “We got a lot of healing and prayer and restoration of our own.” The healing was slow. Ron sat in the lobby most weekends, in part to spend time with Roxxi but mostly

because God was still carefully renovating his soul. That became their routine for four years. When the Van Horns second child, Vincent, was born, God spoke to Ron. Ron shared, “I was wallowing in self-pity and it was time to come out… I realized that my kids didn’t know that I was ever in ministry.” This was a sobering discovery. Ron loved serving in the Kingdom, and that calling which was once so vibrant had been almost totally snuffed out. Tracy felt the same way. As she put it, “I heard God saying to us, ‘You’ve been out. You’ve been healing and you have been anonymous. Now it’s time.’” Ron and Tracy felt ready to get back in the game. But so much time had passed that they weren’t sure where to begin. At the end of a sermon, Senior Pastor Rich Nathan mentioned an interest meeting for a church micro-campus initiative in Circleville. This seemed providential. Tracy elbowed Ron as soon as she heard the announcement, and they attended the meeting with cautious enthusiasm. “We prayed solidly on that for about a year without pulling the trigger,” Ron recalled. During that year the Lord continued to show Ron and Tracy the power of small and humble beginnings. They were pleasantly surprised when Pastor Stephen Van Dop explained that the strategy for Circleville would be much smaller in scale initially than other sites like the Sawmill Campus.

their role in the community. “We are to be the hands and feet of Jesus,” she said, “not just part of the routine on Sunday mornings.” Service to the community and the poor are the backbone of their identity. Ron started a ministry in Circleville called the Bed Brigade, a simple outreach to build free beds for needy families. It has been a great opportunity for people in the church to work together and give dignity to people in their community. Also, in the summer of 2010, they began hosting a free movie night in the park for families. Their presence attracted partnerships with other local churches and is making inroads within the community. Ron and Tracy joined the Vineyard Columbus Church Planting Residency Program in the spring of 2013 and have since grown in

That summer the Van Horns began the Circleville micro-campus initiative with nothing more than a simple cookout. They told their story and welcomed a few friends over. No slick programming, just a meal. And from there they began to serve their community: passing out free water at the farmer’s market and helping vendors set up their booths or picking up debris after bad storms. Since the summer of 2009, the Circleville Campus initiative has grown both in size and, more importantly, in the respect of the community as a church for anyone and everyone. Tracy explained how very early on God showed them an image of

“With Ron it’s not, ‘look at me, look at my dreams, look at my personality’. . . He’s a guy who is seasoned in life. He’s walked people through a lot of valleys . . . and he really has a heart for the people of Circleville.” In March the Circleville micro-campus initiative will transition officially to a church plant, led by Ron and Tracy, whose collection of experiences, setbacks and passion continue to be useful for extending God’s Kingdom.
