From the Top...

President’s Message Be prepared.

I never participated in Girl Scouts, but I am the daughter of an Eagle Scout and I’ve covered enough with Scouts at all levels during my time as Editor of The Orland Park Prairie to know that one particular the Scout motto above can be applied to local business as well. I know a lot of times business owners and employees can get stuck in a rut, doing the same thing over and over. While some can argue “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it,” I can argue that person likely didn’t invent the next iPhone or Fitbit or Keurig K-Cup. When it comes to business, you always need to seek opportunities that will help get you and your business ahead. Lucky for you the Orland Park Area Chamber of Commerce offers several opportunities to help you and your business succeed, or be prepared to succeed. This year, you may have noticed we changed what was once called “Monthly Membership Meetings” to “Success in Business Series.” We’ve changed up days and times so we can try and help people find at least one they can attend. We also are alternating between sitdown breakfasts and lunches at Silver Lake Country Club and bringing a brown bag lunch to the Orland Park Public Library or Orland Park Civic Center. Last month, we held the State of the Village Address with Mayor Dan McLaughlin for

the first time at Homewood Suites by Hilton Elements Conference Center. Thank you to the Mayor and Village Staff for helping making this event another success!

Success In Business Tuesday, April 28, Marketing Presentation Heather Warthen, 22nd Century Media Garry Polodna, SOAR Creative Group 11:45 – 1pm Orland Park Civic Center

Later this month for the Success in Business Series, myself and Garry Polodna of SOAR Creative Group will do a presentation on ways to market your business and get it the attention it deserves. Some light networking will kick things off at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, April 28, at the Orland Park Civic Center. If you’re looking for some new ideas, pack your lunch and plan to attend this event. To see a complete list of times, dates and places for the entire series, see below.

One more event not to miss this month – the 2015 Orland Women’s Networking Annual Luncheon – is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 23. This event has become so popular over the years that the Orland Women’s Networking (OWN) now hosts OWN Mix & Mingle events. I know I look forward to this annual luncheon each year and also cross my fingers that I will be the lucky woman (or man - because yes, men are also invited!) to walk out of there the winner of the James & Sons Jewelry raffle. For more information, visit the Calendar page on the OPACC website at www.orlandparkchamber. org.

Wednesday, October 28 Speaker TBD 11:30 – 1pm Silver Lake Country Club

I was proud to report that we opened 2014 with Chicago Magazine naming Orland Park one of the best places to live and we ended the year by passing the village’s 22nd consecutive balanced budget while keeping the property tax levy flat for the last four years. The village is very stable with a reasonable amount of debt which is one reason Standard and Poor’s and Moody’s have given Orland Park some of the highest bond ratings in the country.

Mayor’s News and Notes

Thank you to everyone who helped with and attended the State of the Village Luncheon in March. It was nice to see so many familiar faces and meet those who are new to the chamber. We video recorded the presentation and it will be airing on cable television and will be available on the village’s YouTube Channel at www.YouTube. com/villageoforlandpark.

I was happy to report that the village’s sales taxes have been increasing. We estimate a 4.5% increase in 2014 over 2013 -- going from $19.2 million to just over $20 million. Home sales are up as well. Prices for existing homes have been increasing.

Eleven retaining walls were needed requiring a tremendous amount of work. When that much work is going on at each end of LaGrange Road, any surprises or weather-related issues can really affect a schedule. In addition, we added about $10 million dollars in aesthetic improvements that will make LaGrange Road reflect the kind of appearance that we have all come to expect.

Last year, 141 new businesses chose Orland Park as a good place to locate their business. We realize the importance of our business community and fostering a good business climate is something that we take very seriously.

This year we will be creating the Orland Park History Museum. We anticipate it will be set up and open to the public by the end of the year. Home Depot is donating $5,000 in supplies plus labor for this effort.

The Illinois Department of Transportation’s current $100 million LaGrange Road Improvement Project started around this time last year. It was originally scheduled to be completed at the end of this year and is a little behind schedule.

All in all, there are many opportunities in Orland Park and we are proud to make Orland Park a great community in which to live, work and play.

This was not your typical road widening project although that alone would be a huge project!

Daniel J. McLaughlin, Mayor

I believe wholeheartedly in community involvement and doing business with people in the community that I live in. I have met a lot of great business owners in the area and have developed some strong relationships. I am especially pleased to be a member of the Chamber’s Ambassadors Club, a group that attends ribbon cutting, events, activities and, for new members, acts as “a friendly face.
